    40 worshippers abducted in Zamfara by bandits

    Bandits have abducted 40 people while observing early morning prayer in the mosque at Tuber village in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

    According to a security expert, Zaragoza Makama, the attack occurred around 5:30 a.m. when the bandits were returning from the Katsina Peace dialogue.

    Sources said the abductors moved the victims into the forests around the Gohori axis of Tsafe.

    “The bandits have no unified command or control. You can negotiate with some groups in Katsina, while others continue to carry out attacks in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kaduna,” a source said.

    The member representing Tsafe West state constituency, Amiru Ahmed Keta, confirmed the incident. “It is true early morning today, the bandits attacked the villagers but they didn’t kill anybody in Turbe village, despite that, they abducted 10 people and confiscated multiple cell phones but two of the abductees escaped.

    “Apart from that, they attacked Dogon Daji village under Keta/Kizara ward slaughtered the village Head and they also entered Bawa Ganga village and killed one Alhaji,. Amiru stated.

    The lawmaker lamented the horrible situation of Kucheri to Wanke Road and how bandits turned it to their ‘‘market’’.

    “The bandits are blocking this road that connects Wanke to Kucheri daily, more especially, Keta- Danjibga-Keta-Kwaren ganuwa villages. They turned this road as their market, they almost sleep there. Even today people of my town Keta were denied access to Gusau and other cities to source for their means of livelihood,’’ Keta further lamented.

    The state Police Command has yet to issue a statement on the incident. Also, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Yazid Abubakar, didn’t respond to calls.

    Bandits abduct worshippers, kill village head in Zamfara

    No fewer than 40 worshippers in Tuber village in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State were reportedly abducted on Monday. 

    They were said to have been abducted during morning prayer in a mosque in the village. 

    A security expert Zaragoza Makama confirmed the incident. He said: “The attack occurred around 5:30 am when the Bandits were on their way back from Katsina peace dialogue. They whisked away the worshippers at gunpoint.”

    Locals confided the abductors later moved the victims deep into the forests around the Gohori axis of Tsafe.

    The incident has thrown the rural community into fear.

    Community members said the attack highlight the fragility of ongoing peace efforts as heavily armed groups continue to operate freely despite dialogue initiatives.

    “The bandits have no unified command or control. You can negotiate with some groups in Katsina, while others continue to carry out attacks in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kaduna,” a local source said 

    When contacted, member representing Tsafe West State Constituency Hon. Amiru Ahmed Keta confirmed the abduction and as well the killing of a District Head and one Alhaji in two villages. 

    Keta said the marauders attacked Gidan Turbe village under Yandoton Daji ward of Tsafe Local government and abducted ten worshippers but two of them managed to escape. 

    “It is true early morning today, the bandits attacked the villagers but they didn’t kill anybody in Turbe village  Despite that, they abducted ten people and confiscated multiple cell phones but two of the abductees escaped,” Keta said.

    Speaking on the figure of the kidnapped victims, the lawmaker said: “Based on my enquiry, this is only what I gathered and that is only what comes to my notice and I can only give a testimony of what comes to my knowledge, even if the figure is more than that, I don’t know anything about it.”

    He also confirmed another attack in Dogon Daji village under Keta/Kizara ward where the bandits killed the village head. 

    He said they also attacked Bawa ganga village and killed one Alhaji.

    Keta further lamented the current horrible situation of Kucheri to Wanke road and how bandits turned it to their market.

    “Until recently, the bandits were re blocking this road that connects Wanke to Kucheri daily, more especially, Keta to Danjibga and Keta to Kwaren ganuwa villages. 

    “They turned this road as their market, they almost slept there all the time. Even today people of my town Keta were denied access to Gusau and other cities to source for their means of livelihood,” he agonised. 

    The Zamfara Police command was yet to issue an official statement on the attacks. 

    When The Nation contacted Zamfara police spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, he refused to pick calls. 

  • Air Force neutralises 20 bandits in Zamfara

    No fewer than 20 bandits have been neutralised in Zamfara State, it was learnt on Wednesday.

    It spokesman, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, in a statement, said the air strikes were conducted after intelligence reports established the presence of the bandits in the area.

    Air Commodore Daramola said: “The Air Component of Operation Hadarin Daji has neutralised no fewer than 20 armed bandits at a location near Munhaye in Zamfara State in air strikes conducted on July 2, 2019.

    “The operation was executed sequel to credible intelligence reports indicating that scores of armed bandits had assembled at the location for a meeting, supposedly with the intention of attacking innocent civilians in the surrounding communities.

    “The Air Component, therefore, scrambled a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet to attack the location, which is about 15 kilometres from the border with Katsina State.

    “Upon arrival overhead the area, the Alpha Jet observed over 30 armed bandits attempting to flee the location whilst firing at the approaching attack aircraft. The Alpha Jet engaged the bandits with effective fire, neutralising 20 of them.

    “The NAF, working in consonance with other security agencies, will sustain its operations to flush the bandits out of the Northwest.”

  • Updated: Mob kills six bandits leaders in Zamfara

    Six leaders of different notorious banditry gang were killed by a mob in Birnin Magaji emir’s palace in Zamfara state on Wednesday.

    The leaders of the bandits were said to have come to the palace for negotiation to take back a number of cattle they rustled at different times.

    But they were attacked at their base by local vigilante groups of the area while the cows were brought to the metropolis by the vigilante members.

    The mob action, according to a resident of the area who preferred anonymity, may not be unconnected with abduction of one of the residents.

    It was learnt the bandits collected a ransom of N2.5m and refused to release the abducted resident.

    It was also gathered the mob was tired of the devastating operations of the bandits, who reportedly killed four people recently with one burnt alive.

    Assistant Director, Army information Force Headquarters Operation Sharar Daji Major Clement C. Abiade confirmed the killing of six bandits.

    He disclosed that troops of operation Sharar Daji and exercise Harbin Kunama III were deployed to the area and security has been beefed up to curtail reprisal by the bandits.

    Abiade revealed that an officer with Department of Statement State DSS sustained two gunshots wounds during the encounter.

  • Six killed, others held as troops ambush Zamfara bandits

    Six suspected bandits have been killed, 18 informants including two village heads arrested and weapons recovered by troops deployed to villages in Zamfara State to quell armed banditry, the Nigerian Army said on Monday.

    Troops of Operation HABIN KUNAMA III were said to have engaged in onslaught against the bandits at Kirsa and Sunke villages in Anka Local Government Area (LGA), as well as Doka and Mutu villages in Gusau LGA were they recorded successes.

    According to Army spokesman Sagir Musa, a Colonel, the clearance operation by the troops led to exchange of gunfire with bandits at Kirsa and Sunke villages killing six of the criminals.

    He said two AK47 rifles and two motorcycles were recovered by the operatives, adding that at Doka and Mutu, troops recovered three motorcycles, two dane guns and two machetes.

    Musa said the troops had serious encounter at Doka and Mutu with “a group of well-armed bandits which lasted for about two hours.

    “The brigands were armed with sophisticated automatic weapons, were overpowered by troops, forcing survivors among them to abandon their camps and logistics which were destroyed by the troops.

    “Additionally, 18 suspected informants and errand men to the bandits including the village heads of Doka and Mutu villages were arrested. The following items were also recovered: 3 motorcycles, 2 dane guns, 2 machetes.

    “The Force Commander (FC) Maj. –  Gen  Hakeem Otiki reiterated the resolve of troops to tackle the menace of armed banditry, other forms of criminality in Zamfara and its contiguous states of Kebbi, Katsina and Sokoto.

    “He enjoined members of the public to continue cooperating with the troops and other security agencies by providing information that will assist in dealing with bandits/banditry activities in the states.”

  • Air Force tackles Zamfara monarchs on list of strikes victims

    The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Thursday faulted the Zamfara monarchs on the list of victims of air raids carried out in Zamfara and its environs against bandits and kidnappers.

    It said at no time did it bomb targeted locations of the criminals.

    The Zamfara state Council of Chiefs through its Chairman and Emir of Bungudu, Alhaji Hassan Attahiru had on Wednesday released names of civilians who were allegedly killed during air raids by the Air Force.

    Following the development, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar ordered a Panel of Inquiry to be headed by an Air Vice Marshal to carry out comprehensive investigations into the allegations, the NAF said.

    Addressing journalists at its Headquarters in Abuja, the Director of Public Relations and Information of the NAF, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, faulted assertion that bombs were used in Zamfara state as false and misleading.

    He said while the list of alleged civilian victims released by the chiefs would be scrutinised during interactions with them, the NAF would not stand down its air interdictions in the state to ensure the safety and security of lives and properties.

    Daramola also emphasised the air raids on bandits and other criminal elements in Zamfara and its environs were carried out after Intelligence, Survaillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms have established their presence in their hideouts, maintaining that such operations are also done with human intelligence.

    He maintained that there was no way the Air Force could have “bomb” anyone more so when it only used lower calibre munitions even as the bandits have anti-aircraft guns in their possession.

    Daramola said: ” The allegation that bombs were used is therefore not only false but out rightly misleading.

    “In the light of the allegation by the Zamfara State Council of Chiefs, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has ordered a high powered Panel of Inquiry to investigate the veracity or otherwise of the claim. The Panel, which will be headed by an Air Vice Marshal – 2-star general, will work with the Zamfara State Government as well as the Zamfara State Council of Chiefs and other stakeholders.

    “The Panel will start its investigation from Katsina, the Headquarters of Operation DIRAN MIKYA, before proceeding to Gusau and other relevant locations Zamfara State to properly scrutinize all evidence presented by the Zamfara State Council of Chiefs. At the end of the investigation, members of the public would be duly informed.

    “The NAF would not relent in its unwavering commitment to sustain its operations to flush out armed bandits from Zamfara and its environs in collaboration with other security agencies. The NAF wishes to restate that it will always be responsible and will not take any action that will jeopardize the safety and security of the people of Zamfara State.

    “As a professional organisation and in line with our constitutional mandate, we shall not be distracted but ensure that the innocent people of Zamfara and indeed all Nigerians are safe and secure to be able to pursue their legitimate aspirations.”

  • Air Force probes flogging of bandits by personnel

    The Nigerian Air Force(NAF)  has launched an investigation into a video currently in circulation where its personnel were seen flogging bandits in Zamfara State.

    The NAF not only condemned the behaviour of the military personnel,  but confirmed that some of  its personnel were part of the joint operations  going on in Zamfara State to flush out bandits.

    A statement by the spokesman of the Air Force, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said a Board of Inquiry had been instituted on the matter, promising that those culpable would not go unpunished.

    Air Commodore Daramola said: “The attention of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been drawn to a video and some pictures circulating on some social media and online platforms showing some military personnel flogging suspected armed bandits at Shinkafi Local Government Area in Zamfara State.

    “The NAF has discovered that some of its personnel were part of the joint team stationed at the Galadi Sub-Sector at the time.

    “The joint team had, sequel to intelligence reports, intercepted a group of suspected armed bandits, including some fighters from across the border, at their Sububu Forest hideout whilst they were on the verge of executing an attack against innocent civilians in Shinkafi. In the process, the team recovered one AK-47 rifle along with 3 loaded magazines and 3 dane guns from the bandits.

    “ In an effort to obtain further information on the criminals’ plans and the location of their armoury, the troops employed unauthorised, crude corporal methods.

    “The NAF wishes to state unequivocally that the troops’ actions of flogging and physically assaulting the disarmed suspects were totally unacceptable and not in consonance with the Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs) guiding the conduct of the operation.

    “Our personnel have always been directed to respect the rights of innocent civilians as well as captured combatants, no matter the provocation.

    “The public is to please note that the NAF has zero tolerance for such human rights violations and has since initiated appropriate action to address the anomaly.

    “In this regard, a Board of Inquiry (BOI) has been set up by the Headquarters Special Operations Command (HQ SOC) to determine the remote and immediate causes of the incident with a view to ensuring that appropriate disciplinary action is taken against all NAF personnel found culpable. The public will be kept informed on the outcome of the investigations.

    “ The NAF, as an organisation, wishes to state that it remains a professional fighting force that will continue to operate within the ambits of all relevant laws and procedures, as well as in line with international best practices, whilst remaining fully accountable to the Nigerian people. “

  • Video: Air Force strikes bandits in Zamfara

    The Nigerian Air Force said on Thursday that it had intensified its strikes on bandits in Zamfara State, killing scores of them and destroying their hideouts and trucks.

    Its spokesman Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola said in a statement that the bombardment was conducted after intelligence reports indicated their presence in the area.

    Air Commodore Daramola said: “The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation DIRAN MIKIYA has intensified the bombardment of armed bandits’ hideouts in Zamfara State and environs.

    “The air strikes were preceded by days of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, initiated based on credible Human Intelligence reports, which led to the identification of several camps being used by the bandits to launch attacks against innocent civilians.

    ” One of the air interdiction missions was conducted at dawn today, 7 February 2019, at a location in Rugu Forest South of Gurbin Baure, where some armed bandits were seen assembled by a logistics truck parked near their compound-hideout.

    “The ATF dispatched a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) attack helicopter and an Alpha Jet to engage the bandits’ truck and compound.

    ” Overhead the target area, the bandits were seen dispersing in different directions with some attempting to make a getaway in the truck.

    “The helicopter strafed the moving truck in successive passes immobilizing it and neutralizing its occupants.

    “The Alpha Jet simultaneously attacked the compound and destroyed one of the huts harbouring the bandits, which was seen engulfed in flames.

    “Credible Intelligence sources later revealed that several bandits were killed as a result of the attack.

    “The NAF, working in close coordination with surface forces and other security agencies, will sustain its reconnaissance and air interdiction missions to neutralize the armed bandits and deny them freedom of action in the area. “

  • Troops kill 21 bandits, capture 17, rescue 89

    Troops of Operation Sharan Daji have between January 22 and 28 neutralised 21 bandits, captured 17 and rescued 89 persons taken hostage by the bandits in Zamfara and Katsina states.

    Giving an update on the operation in a statement yesterday, Maj. Clement Abiade, the Acting Force Information Officer, Operation Sharan Daji, said 55 of the freed captives were held captives in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

    He said they had been debriefed and reunited with their families, adding that most of them are from communities in Zamfara.

    Abiade said two bandits’ informants, Musa Amadu and Auwalu Mutairu, were arrested at Danfumi village in Birnin Magaji and were assisting troops with intelligence.

    “It is significant to inform the public that 11 civilians and one vigilante were killed by bandits during the period in focus.

    “It is also important to state that six persons were kidnapped at Asoula village in Tsafe Local Government and not in Birnin Magaji as reported by some media houses,” he said.

    The information officer said during the period under review, one single barrel gun, two locally- made pistols and 20 cartridges of double barrel bullets were recovered from the bandits.

    He listed other recovered arms as 60 rounds of 7.62mm, special one AK-47 magazine containing 18 rounds of 7.62mm special, two Dane guns, four motorcycles and large quantity of Indian hemp and illicit drugs.

    “The operation is designed to identify and destroy bandits’ camps/enclaves,” Abiade said.

    In line with the mandate of Operation SHARAN DAJI (OPSD), troops are conducting operations into bandits’ enclaves in Zamfara and Katsina states. The operation is being conducted simultaneously in collaboration with all security agencies and local vigilantes to achieve synergy. The current offensive is designed to identify and destroy bandits’ camps/enclaves in the area of operation.

    The operation has recorded some successes. On January 22, troops on clearance operation in Gando forest came into contact with a large gang of bandits armed with sophisticated firearms and rocket propelled grenades, leading to fierce gun battles, which lasted several hours. The bandits were forced to abandon their camps due to superior firepower during these encounters. Troops also made contact with bandits operating in Shinkafi, Birnin Magaji and some isolated villages in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

    Troops of OPSD operating in Katsina State made contact with bandits at different locations around Safana, Runka, Kukan Sama between January 25 and 28.

    The following items were recovered from the bandits during the period: one single barrel gun, two locally-made pistols, 20 cartridges of double barrel bullets, 60 rounds of 7.62mm special, one AK 47 magazine containing 18 rounds of 7.62mm special, two Dane guns, four motorcycles, large quantity of Indian hemp and illicit drugs.

    Umaru, who gave the directive through spokesman Haruna Mohammed, said the measure became necessary following recent upsurge in cultism.

    He asked those involved to desist or have themselves to blame, regardless of their positions.

    “The CP has ordered aggressive manhunt for perpetrators, including their sponsors, in order to stem the tide of the menace. The clamp down has begun with immediate effect.

    “The command is determined to ensure that criminals in whatever guise have no hiding place in the state, no matter how highly placed they may be, especially during this period of campaigns,” he said.

    While vowing to deal with anyone apprehended in accordance with the law, the CP reassured residents of the command’s determination to provide safety and security.

    “The command implores parents/guardians to caution their children and wards to refrain from indulging in cultism and other nefarious activities or face severe legal consequences when arrested,” he added.

  • Minister urges Zamfara communities to support military operation

    Minister of Defence, Rtd. Brig. Gen. Mansur Dan Ali has called on communities in Zamfara to support ongoing military operation against banditry in the state.

    The Minister made the call in an interview with newsmen during his one-day working visit to review the activities of “Operation Sharan Daji” in Gusau on Thursday.

    Dan Ali said community support was very necessary to enable the security personnel understand the nature of the terrain.

    He said intelligence information from communities was very critical to guiding the military operation in identifying the location and how to get at criminals.

    He commended the effort of Zamfara State Government over the establishment of Civilian Joint Task Force to complement conventional security personnel.

    According to him, since soldiers were trained to defend the nation, it was therefore important for communities to give them all the necessary support.

    Expressing satisfaction with the conduct of military operation in the state, the defence minister urged them to keep up the good work. (NAN)
