  • Why Buhari will get governors’ cooperation —Yari

Zamfara State Governor and Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Abdulaziz Yari, said yesterday that governors must cooperate with President Muhammadu Buhari because of the assistance he has given to state governments, especially in the payment of workers’ salaries.

He made the remark while speaking with State House correspondents after observing the juma’at prayers with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He also advised that the next leadership of the NGF must work on the basis of the president’s agenda.

According to him, the present membership of the forum under his leadership had cooperated in full with the President, who he said was magnanimous enough to provide bailouts that enabled the states to pay workers’ salaries.

Asked what type of NGF leadership he would like to see emerge after him, Yari said: “I will like to see a leadership that will perform better than I did; the type that will work in tandem with the Presidency.

“I appreciate my colleagues for giving me the cooperation. And within the forum, there was no break-up, and there was no crisis between the Presidency and the forum.

“We worked together for our economy to grow and to support the President on his agenda to fight corruption and insecurity.

“You are fully aware of what the President has done for the states; the bailouts to ensure that workers can be paid their salaries.

“We are all from the states, including Mr. President himself.

“I can give the governors pass mark. Mr. President has commissioned a number of projects in the states. At times, he sent representatives.

“So, I hope the NGF will remain united and work in tandem with the federal government’s agenda.” he said

  • Banditry: Yari calls for permanent military base in Zamfara

Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari has called for the opening of a permanent military base in Kawaye general area in Anka Local Government to curb incessant banditry in the locality.

The governor made the call on Saturday when paid a condolence visit to the community over the killing of 13 persons and abduction of 60 villagers by armed bandits on Tuesday.

Yari said the deployment of troops to the general area would help in confronting the security challenges facing communities there, and restore their crippled economy.

He assured that the government would not forgive those involved in the dastardly act and promised that they would be hunted down until peace is restored.

Yari said: “The state government will do everything possible to bring such people to justice.

“What I saw in these communities is a serious crime to the economy and an attempt to instigate citizens against government.

“Knowing that one of the primary responsibilities of every government is to protect lives and property, by their act they are trying to show government is not capable.

“Nigeria and the Nigerian Army are stronger than any criminal group and since they do not want us to live in peace, they will not be spared.”

Earlier, the Emir of Anka, Alhaji Attahiru Ahmed thanked the governor for the condolence visit and efforts being made in handling the security challenges in the area.

He also called for massive deployment of security personnel to the area, adding that Kawaye general area was strategic in tackling banditry in the state.

The emir called on communities to compliment government efforts by providing useful information on the movement of the bandits to security agencies.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bandits, who attacked the village at about 5:00pm on Tuesday, killed 13, burnt vehicles, shops and houses before abducting over 60 people, including the village head.

However, 19 of those abducted had returned home, leaving over 40, mostly women, in the hands of the abductors. (NAN)

Speaking with State House correspondents after meeting with Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, Yari said “What we are trying to do is to kind of teach them a lesson because the problem we have in Zamfara State in the North-west is kind of a peculiar problem that some of the traditional rulers are supporting the banditry activities or taking advantage or taking money from them or having relationship that is very dangerous. To give you trust to manage people through tradition and then you are taking part, directly or indirectly, so that is not acceptable.”

Asked how he was going to address the issue, he said “Anyone that we find wanting in this, definitely he must face punishment. And we are trying to use every avenue that we have to ensure that we fish out those that are within us – within the traditional rulers and outside.

“That is why we hired intelligence; we hired the civilian JTF and all of them, so that they can help us by giving us the details.

“For instance, we have about 2600 men and women that are working against these bandits but still it is not enough because of the terrain.

“The terrain is not known to them, so we have employ sons of the soil that will lead the security agencies to their doorsteps and we have been getting very serious results to our advantage.”

When asked if more traditional rulers will go if found wanting, the governor said “Of course! Absolutely! If you are talking about general public we are almost getting to 5 million and the total number of traditional rulers is about 300, so if we find any one! Anyone! Underline the word ‘anyone,’ found wanting, he would go!”

On how many AK47 he has recovered, which he promised to pay N1 million each, he simply said “About ten”.

Speaking on the purpose of his visit to the Vice President, he said “It is about the NEC, discussing of the good date for the NEC, because this is the end of the year and usually we used to have extended NEC and looking at who and who should be invited for the NEC, being the last year for the election.

“That is what we discussed and we agreed that the NEC is going to be held on Friday, December 14. The NEC is to discuss the economy and to review the performance of the economy from January 2018 to date.

Asked if he was doing anything about the report that Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun and Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha’s preferred candidates defecting to other parties, he said “If you want to discuss politics, you can go to party secretariat.”

On the call for the declaration of a state of emergency in Zamfara state following the killings of policemen in the state, he said “Are there no killing of security officers anywhere else in Nigeria, except Zamfara? Why shouldn’t they call for that in the other places?”

  • I’m not building $3million hotel in Abuja – Zamfara Governor

I’m not building $3million hotel in Abuja – Zamfara Governor

Zamfara state governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari has denied reports that he was building a $3 million dollars hotel in Abuja with money stolen from the state shares of the Paris Club refund.

The governor said he neither own a plot of land in the Abuja, nor is building a hotel in the city, describing reports that he embezzled another N2.2 billion from the N19billion set aside illegally to pay “consultants”, as wrong, harmful, libelous and misleading.

In a statement signed by the Head of Media and Public Affairs of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Abulrazque B. Barkindo, the governor expressed concern the reports by an online media quoting an unnamed source from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The governor condemned the resort to media trial of people by the commission, stressing that such attitude has led to the commission losing many high profile cases of corruption.

He said while the media is entitled to perform its duties as watchdog of society, which is enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it is not, however, entitled to make unfair attacks, based on unfounded, false and unsubstantiated allegations against responsible public office holders.

The statement reads: “Reports on Governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar of Zamfara State, and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum making the rounds in some online media which claimed that the “governor is building a $3m hotel from monies stolen from the Paris-London Club refunds to states” give cause for worry.

“The reports contain harmful, damaging and libelous insinuations which remain largely unsubstantiated despite the fact that it attributes the leaks to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), officials in Lagos.

“Governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar has said emphatically that he does not even own a plot of land in Lagos not to talk of a hotel. But the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission officials in Lagos claimed as follows: that “they have found a hotel being constructed by Governor Yari of Zamfara state with $3m he stole from London-Paris Club loan refund to Nigerian states.

“That “apart from the $3million, Governor Yari also diverted N500 million from the Paris Club refund to pay off a loan”, an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) source revealed to an online medium.

“The medium also added that EFCC officials in Lagos revealed that “overall the governor embezzled the sum of N2.2 billion from the N19billion set aside illegally to pay “consultants”, all of which are wrong, harmful, libelous and misleading disclosures.

“Governor Abdulaziz Yari is not building any hotel in Lagos nor were any monies stolen or embezzled from the Paris-London Club refunds to states or from any other source.

“The online medium quoted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) extensively as its source and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum is alarmed that the EFCC continues to feed the media fibs at the expense of its hard-earned reputation as the anti- graft agency that Nigerians used to respect.

“This is perhaps why the EFCC has lost most of the high-profile corruption cases at the law courts after it had unfairly stage-managed media trials and caused their victims personal pain and public umbrage.

“This report, typical of most of the exclusive leaks that are becoming characteristic of the sources that court some sections of the media, lacks detail and compelling evidence to be fit to print.

“The sources were courageous enough to mention a hotel in Lekki area of Lagos but gave neither a street name nor any specific information on the property to give credibility to the allegations. This does no service to any investigation nor does it help the development of our country Nigeria.

“The media, we all know, is entitled to perform its duties as watchdog of society, which is enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is not, however, entitled to make unfair attacks, based on unfounded, false and unsubstantiated allegations against responsible public office holders.

“The media should support the EFCC in ensuring that convicting people on the pages of newspapers shouldn’t be the focus of the EFCC in its war against corruption. Instead, EFCC should channel its energies to comprehensive, thorough and credible investigation that can stand the scrutiny of legal examination in court.

“There can be no claim to any semblance of due process when individuals are convicted on the pages of newspapers before they are arraigned only to be declared innocent at the end, all at the expense of their reputation and that of their immediate family, through such media hype.

“The newspaper is not an alternative court, as far as our constitution is concerned, and all responsible journalists are obliged by the ethics of their profession to ensure that whatever goes into publication is verified and adjudged to be accurate.

“I therefore urge, in the spirit of responsible journalism, balance and fairness, that journalists desist from absorbing hook, line and sinker scoops from fifth columnists whose actions are tantamount to dragging the reputation of the EFCC in the mud”.

  • Saraki makes case for Nigerian engineers in construction

Saraki makes case for Nigerian engineers in construction

Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has called government agencies at all levels to integrate Nigerian engineers, technicians, and artisans in construction projects.

Saraki said this would ensure the utilisation of local capacity and conserving foreign exchange.

A statement on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Sani Onogu, quoted the Senate President as making the call at the flag-off ceremony of the construction of the Dauran-Birni, Tsaba-Birnin and Magaji-Kaura Namoda Roads in Zamfara State.

He also called on government agencies to make use locally made equipment where possible.

Saraki, however, disclosed that the National Assembly was in the process of passing the Federal Roads Authority and National Road Fund Bills into law.

The proposed legislation, the statement said, seek to promote safe and efficient management of the nation’s road networkand open opportunities for alternative funding mechanisms from the private sector that will guarantee continuous improvement of the quality of roads year in year out.

Saraki said, “As we are about to begin this massive road construction, I hope that our Nigerian engineers, technicians and artisans have been, and will continue to be incorporated in the workforce at all the different stages of construction; and that we also employ the use of locally-made equipment where possible.

“This will boost local content and reinforce our drive in the National Assembly for increased patronage of Made in Nigeria goods. It is expected that this avenue will provide a trickle-down effect on the socio-economic activities of Zamfara state”.

The Senate President praised the Zamfara State Governor, Abdul’aziz Yari for starting the project at a period of limited resources.

Said he, “Indeed, to take up such a gigantic project in this period with such limited resources coming into the state makes an unmistakable statement that leadership and governance is all about commitment to the cause of lifting our people from poverty and suffering.

“No doubt, the construction of a reliable road network is one of the fastest ways of moving people, goods and services for growth and development.

“This project is commendable because Zamfara state plays a very important role in food production in Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.

“For state which prides itself on its large farming population, an improved road network will definitely provide more employment opportunities to the people and improve socio-economic activities in the State.

“The challenges of road construction and maintenance have been a very big setback in our quest for sustainable economic development as a nation”.

“I will like to thank all our party men and women who have kept faith with this administration. The executive arm and the legislature are working tirelessly to ensure our economy is revived and the fruits of development reach every citizen. We have to join hands with Mr President to ensure that the common man finds comfort in this country.”

Before Buhari’s trip out of the country, Saraki had met with him three different times within one week over his request for approval to get $29.9 billion loan.

The Senate had recently rejected Buhari’s approval request for the loan.

It also described the 2017 to 2019 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) forwarded by President Buhari for approval as “empty.”

The MTEF is yet to be approved by the Senate.

At the end of the meeting with Osinbajo on Monday, Saraki simply told State House correspondents: “Am sure the VP will issue a statement. But nothing of great alarm. It’s all for good governance, inclusion and collaboration with all arms. The states are here, national assembly executives just came up with ideas on how to make things work even better, that’s all.”
