The immediate past sole administrator of Maru Local Government Area in Zamfara State, Hon. Yusuf Sani Bindin, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Zamfara State chapter of the APC disclosed that Bindin served as sole administrator of Maru Local Government Area for one year and, in recognition of his political influence, was later appointed Programme Manager at the Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), a position he held until his resignation from the PDP.

In a statement issued by the APC Publicity Secretary, Malam Yusuf Idris Gusau, the party described Bindin’s hometown as a political stronghold in Maru Local Government Area, noting his wide acceptance and strong grassroots followership.

According to the statement, Bindin accused the PDP-led government in the state of being controlled by a few individuals who, he claimed, have sidelined Governor Dauda Lawal for their personal interests.

The statement further quoted him as saying that more than two years into the Lawal administration, it has become increasingly difficult for stakeholders to secure an audience with the governor to engage in constructive discussions aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.

Bindin said his decision to join the APC, despite the party being in opposition in the state, followed extensive consultations with his supporters and a shared conclusion that the PDP-led government had failed and was no longer worthy of their support.

He expressed gratitude to the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, for warmly receiving him and his supporters into the APC.

Receiving the new entrants at a gathering held at his residence in Abuja, Matawalle commended their decision, describing it as timely and patriotic.

He said the APC remains an inclusive party and will continue to welcome politicians of all backgrounds from opposition parties, particularly the PDP, in Zamfara State.

The minister assured the defectors that they would enjoy all rights and benefits accorded to APC members at all times.

APC Zamfara denies Bello Turji’s alleged membership

The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday disassociated itself from claims that notorious bandit leader Bello Turji had registered as a party member, describing the circulated membership slip as forged.

Social media platforms have been awash with images of a supposed APC membership card bearing Turji’s details over the past 48 hours, suggesting he had joined the ruling party.

In a statement, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris Gusau, said the fake slip was a deliberate attempt by mischievous actors to tarnish the party’s image and undermine its ongoing electronic membership registration exercise across the state.

Gusau noted that the card displayed clear signs of forgery, including the use of a widely recognized photograph of the criminal known to security agencies and the public.

He further explained that no individual can be validly registered without a National Identification Number (NIN), a requirement Turji is unlikely to meet, rendering the purported membership slip invalid and exposing the efforts of those attempting to discredit the party.

According to Gusau, “The forgers forgot that before any person is enrolled by NIMC, he must fill a form that will contain his full information before he is captured, how then NIMC could capture him with a military uniform and gun on his shoulders, or are they blind or had forgotten that such features are not acceptable.

“Also, from our records of today’s (Tuesday) registration from Kware ward, we did not have the ID number with the initial ID code ’26’, which is for Niger state, but forged for a Zamfara membership card, talkless of the name.”

The party said its preliminary investigation has already linked the mischievous card to a disgruntled member (names withheld), who was recently suspended from participating in the ongoing e-registration programme due to his dubious attitude.

“The APC e-registration coordinator in Zamfara State and indeed the state’s chapter of the party wish to completely debunk and distance themselves from the fake membership card with registration number: ID: APC 261113000102. The code used is for Niger state, which starts with 26, while Zamfara State ID code starts with 36, which clearly shows their ignorance of the registration.”

Calling on the public to disregard the slip, the party said it has reported the forgery case to the security agencies for investigation and prosecution of the sponsors of the fake membership slip.

Zamfara sets up panel for Anka airstrip project

The Zamfara Ministry of Works and Infrastructure has set up a 16-member technical committee to identify a suitable site for a proposed airstrip in Anka LGA.

Mr Jamilu Bello, the Ministry’s Information Officer, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Gusau on Sunday.

The airstrip will be constructed by the Federal Government to enhance security operations across Zamfara State.

The Zamfara government will provide the necessary land, while the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Airspace Development will oversee construction.

“Zamfara State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, inaugurated the committee to identify a sustainable location for the airstrip in Anka LGA,” Bello said.

The committee will be chaired by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Haruna Dikko, with Amiru Musa, Director of Civil Engineering, serving as Secretary.

According to Bello, the committee will provide professional leadership and technical expertise throughout the exercise.

Members include representatives from the Ministries of Local Government and Housing, Zamfara Geographic Information System (ZAGIS), Anka Local Government, the Anka Emirate Council, and security agencies.

The Ministry also deployed a technical team, led by the Director of Civil Engineering, to conduct field inspections, stakeholder consultations, and technical assessments.

Bello noted that a suitable land parcel would be recommended and formally designated for the project.

“The initiative aligns with Gov. Dauda Lawal’s commitment to improving connectivity, supporting security operations, and promoting socio-economic development through strategic infrastructure,” he added.

Panel visits Zamfara college ahead of conversion to varsity

The Transition Committee for seamless integration of the existing College of Health Sciences and Technology (CHST), Tsafe, into the newly established Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology (FUHST), Tsafe, has visited the college for a smooth transition.

A statement issued by the institution’s spokesperson, Jamilu Sani Tsafe, said that during the engagement, the acting provost, Jamilu Lawal, expressed the college’s commitment to collaborating with the committee to achieve a smooth transition.

The committee was formed by Governor Dauda Lawal in November 2025 with Professor Lawal S. Bilbis as chairman.

The panel’s responsibilities include ensuring the university’s smooth launch, overseeing the transfer of CHST’s facilities to become the permanent site of FUHST; and reviewing and verifying CHST student records for integration into appropriate university programs that meet NUC and JAMB standards.

The panel will also assess CHST staff qualifications and experience for potential absorption into the university, in line with NUC staffing requirements; and propose land for future university expansion and consider relocating the CHS.

Professor Bashir Kaka is the co-chair of the committee, with state commissioners and education officials as members.

The statement said the provost highlighted the institution’s evolution, noting that it began as the School of Health Technology in 2001, initially offering professional certificates and diplomas across five departments.

Over the years, it expanded its programs and student body, now accommodating 2,294 students and offering 25 courses, including certificates, National Diplomas, and Higher National Diplomas.

In 2014, it was upgraded to its current status as the College of Health Sciences and Technology.

In his remarks, Professor Bilbis explained that their visit was to assess the college’s facilities and resources.

He said the committee’s findings will guide recommendations to the government on how best to utilise these assets for the new university.

The meeting underscores a pivotal phase in the institution’s growth, aligning with broader educational advancements in the region.

Zamfara gov’t completes renovation of 30-year-old JB Yakubu Secretariat

The Zamfara State Government has completed the renovation of JB Yakubu Secretariat Complex in Gusau, the state capital.

It said the renovation of the final phase of the secretariat has been completed and furniture installation will be done within coming weeks.

This was revealed by the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, on Tuesday when he inspected the project consisting of Block C of the Complex.

He expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work done by the contractor Sources Plus Nigeria Limited, a statement by the SSA Media in the SSG’s Office, Suleman Ahmad Tudu, said on Wednesday.

During the inspection, the SSG expressed confidence in the timeline, while urging the contractor to address some minor observations raised to ensure high-quality standards.

Recall that Governor Dauda Lawal has already commissioned the first and second phases of the project consisting of Blocks A and B, which are now fully operational with solar power and Wi-fi connectivity, enhancing service delivery to the people of the state.

The 30-year-old JB Yakubu Secretariat complex had languished without any major renovations, despite hosting many Ministries, Departments and Agencies until recently.

Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration has prioritized the provision of modern office facilities for the state workforce, recognizing that a conducive environment is essential for productivity and effective service delivery.

  • Group commends Lawal’s security push in Zamfara, rejects calls to revive Yari-Era policies

Group commends Lawal’s security push in Zamfara, rejects calls to revive Yari-Era policies

The Arewa Coalition for Peace, Reform and Good Governance (ACPRGG) has commended Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, for what it described as deliberate, courageous and reform-driven efforts to address the state’s deep-rooted security challenges, arguing that the current administration inherited a collapsed security architecture from years of failed leadership.

In a statement issued on Friday in Kaduna, the group’s president, Alhaji Sadiq Mahmoud, said Governor Lawal deserved support rather than criticism for confronting an insecurity crisis that had been allowed to fester under previous administrations, particularly during the tenure of former governor Abdul’aziz Yari.

Mahmoud said recent incidents, including the suspected bomb explosion along the Yar’Tasha–Dansadau road in Maru Local Government Area, should be viewed within the broader context of long-standing governance failures that predated the Lawal administration.

He stressed that the current governor was not responsible for creating Zamfara’s insecurity, describing the situation as the result of years of negligence, poor policy decisions and short-sighted strategies that empowered armed groups, weakened state institutions and normalised violence.

The group dismissed calls for Governor Lawal to revert to security strategies deployed during Yari’s administration, describing those approaches as ineffective and largely responsible for the spread and entrenchment of armed groups across the state’s forests and rural communities.

Mahmoud said the so-called strategies of the past neither defeated banditry nor protected communities, noting that armed groups expanded, weapons proliferated and residents were left vulnerable to criminal elements.

He added that Zamfara’s security crisis did not emerge overnight and did not originate under the current administration.

According to the ACPRGG, Governor Lawal has adopted a more structured and sustainable approach, with an emphasis on intelligence-led operations, collaboration with federal security agencies and rebuilding trust between communities and the state.

The group noted that the governor has maintained consistent engagement with security chiefs and traditional rulers, while prioritising reforms aimed at addressing the economic and social drivers of violence.

Mahmoud also defended the governor against criticism over his movements outside the state, arguing that effective security leadership goes beyond physical presence and includes high-level coordination with federal authorities and security institutions.

He said security governance was about strategy, coordination and long-term planning, adding that Governor Lawal had demonstrated a clear understanding of these principles while working to reverse years of systemic damage.

The group urged residents to remain patient and vigilant, stressing that resolving a decade-long security crisis would require time, consistency and collective support. It also cautioned against politicising insecurity or promoting narratives that absolve past leaders of responsibility.

Mahmoud said meaningful progress would be impossible without an honest assessment of past failures, insisting that the insecurity confronting Zamfara today was the outcome of ineffective leadership under previous administrations.

As investigations continue into the Maru road explosion, the group called for unity, cooperation with security agencies and sustained support for Governor Lawal’s efforts, maintaining that lasting peace can only be achieved through accountable governance and credible reform.

He further expressed optimism that with the state-of-the-art equipment provided by the State Government including the Armoured Career vehicles, he has no excuse than to perform.
