  • Messi, Ibrahimovic in running for 2019 Puskas Award

Argentina international and Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi and LA Galaxy forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic are in running for this year’s Puskas Award.

FIFA released the 10-player shortlist of nominees Monday. The annual prize handed each year to individual who scores the ‘most beautiful’ goal of the year

All goals under consideration were scored between 16 July 2018 and 18 July 2019 inclusive, with seven men and three women on the shortlist, the highest number of female nominees in a single year to date. As yet, no woman has ever won the Puskas Award.

Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend makes the list for his thunderbolt effort against Manchester City last season, as does Zlatan Ibrahimovic for his wonderfully improvised finish for LA Galaxy against Toronto FC back in September.

Amy Rodriguez’s stunning solo effort for Utah Royals also makes the list, as does Cliftonville Ladies’ Billie Simpson’s strike against Sion Swift Ladies – an incredible volley from the halfway line.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah won last year’s Puskas Award, while other past winners since its creation in 2009 have included Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, James Rodriguez, Olivier Giroud as well as 2019 nominee Ibrahimovic.

Fans will have until midnight (CEST) on 1 September to cast their vote. The public vote will then close and the overall winner will be chosen from the top three by a panel of FIFA Legends.

The winner will be announced at the Best FIFA Football Awards gala in Milan on 23 September

  • Onuoha rejects Ibrahimovic’s apology after ‘unacceptable’ clash

Nedum Onuoha has rejected an apology from striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the two players clashed during La Galaxy’s 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Sunday.

Ibrahimovic, who scored the winning goal late on, received a yellow card after 60 minutes for grabbing the former Manchester City defender and throwing him to the floor, sparking a fiery confrontation.

After the match, the players continued the argument in the dressing room and Onouha later confirmed that he wasn’t willing to make amends with the Swedish forward.

“He came in to apologize after the game, because from 60 minutes in, he’s saying to me he’s going to do me, he’s going to hurt me for that game,” Onuoha told reporters.

“And this is the guy who’s the face of MLS, as he calls himself, but this is the way he plays on the field.

“So I don’t care. Someone comes in and tries to do that to me — you don’t say that on the field. I don’t care. I’m not going to accept his apology. It’s unacceptable.”

Ibrahimovic had little regrets over the altercation and said that it helped him to perform better in the game.

“I like to feel alive,” Ibrahimovic told reporters afterwards. “I like when it becomes duels and that, because sometimes — not that I fall asleep, but I don’t feel alive if they don’t actually activate me. When I get angry, I feel good.”

  • Ibrahimovic set to return to Galaxy

Zlatan Ibrahimovic intends to be back with the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2019 after considering a return to AC Milan, sporting director Leonardo told reporters on Sunday.

AC Milan attempted to bring the star forward back to Italy, but the Galaxy met Ibrahimovic’s requests, according to Leonardo.

“He gave his word to Galaxy that he would stay if they satisfied his conditions, and they did so,” Leonardo said after Milan played a 0-0 draw with Torino in Serie A play on Sunday.

“It would have been a really lovely story because it would have given a significant weight to the team. We can’t deny that both parties thought of it, but it will not be possible.”

Ibrahimovic was an immediate star for the Galaxy in his first MLS season.

He scored 22 goals — second in MLS — and added 10 assists in 27 matches and was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year.

He also had the 2018 Goal of the Year — a 40-yard strike for his first MLS goal, moments after first taking the field — and was the only player to have two nominations for the award.

The 37-year-old had one hat trick and scored two goals on five other occasions. He is currently under contract with the Galaxy through the 2019 season, something Los Angeles technical director Jovan Kirovski recently pointed out as speculation increased.

“Ibrahimovic’s contract isn’t expiring, he still has a year on his contract with us,” Kirovski told reporters.

“We want him to be happy in our team and we are working to ensure that he can continue playing for the Galaxy.

“He’s a special player, unique for us. To score so many goals and provide so many assists at his age, after the (knee) injury at Manchester United, is incredible. There are many excellent players, but no one is like him.”

Ibrahimovic previously played two seasons for AC Milan from 2010-12 and scored 42 goals in 61 appearances.

  • Ibrahimovic drops bombshell: ‘I am my God…who is God?’

Controversial striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has yet stirred the hornet’s nest as he queried the existentiality of the creator amongst other provocative issues in an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair magazine.

“I am my God,” Ibra who was birthed by a Muslim father and Catholic mother reportedly stated. “And then who is God? When my brother died, where was God to save him?

“It’s just an example, but I believe in respect and discipline. If you respect me, I respect you, I do not care what faith you profess. I grew up in this way and my parents have never forced me on one side or the other.

“They are not of those who when they make a goal thank heaven. The goalkeeper who suffers it what should he do? Is there a god who favours me and disadvantages him? Does one grow and crush another? Sport and religion do not get along.

“Also because football is a religion in itself, it does not matter what you believe or where it comes from. You just have to play football. ”

Speaking on other  wide range of issues from his love for the camera to his tiff with Pep Guardiola during his days at FC Barcelona,  opened up on his fond admiration for foremost boxer Muhammadu Ali while growing up.

“I loved Muhammad Ali who is not an actor, but it was the myth I had, as a person and as an athlete,” the 37-year-old Swede reportedly said. “I loved how he did his things, always as he wanted. He had a vision, and he realized it. This is my mentality, I believe in something and I do it.”

That Ibra is a single-minded guy is never in doubt and he pulls no punches on matter dear and this was the threads in another tempestuous discourse about his days  under Guardiola at Barcelona: “I see it differently. The first six months went very well, and then everything changed for the worse. In the book I will tell: Guardiola had a problem with me only that he did not want to face it and I could no longer be myself, with his attitude he managed to make me doubt myself and my abilities. Of course, it could have been better in football terms but I learned a lot. Learning and growing is a bit ‘the meaning of life.”

The Swede also gave the rationale behind a new book (I AM FOOTBALL) which is a sequel to ‘I Am Zlatan Ibrahimovic’ even as he distinguishes between football and soccer in his usual contentious manner. “The first is the story of the person, of Zlatan. This is instead the story of the player. Photos, texts, memories and all the data of my career.

“ It’s easy to remember the goal I made last week or the first one I scored here, but my career is twenty years long and I think there are so many things to fix on a page, not to forget. Many players only played for one team, but I was lucky enough to shoot and play in the best clubs in the world and I was able to do well everywhere. ”

He speaks more on I AM FOOTBALL: “Soccer is when you make a difference. Soccer is when you are not one like many: when you are unique. There are players who play football and there are players who think football. When one thinks football invents, others only follow.

“When I play I love making a difference. I do not want to do just one or two things well, I want to do them all right. My goal as a player was to become as complete as possible and I think I succeeded .”

Now with LA Galaxy in the Major League Soccer in the US, Ibra  has played for some of  top European clubs including Ajax, Juventus, Barcelona, Inter Milan, PSG and Manchester United but he still covets   a final hurrah in  Milan.

He said: “There is interest. But I’d be fine another year here in LA. That Milan like me is not a secret. I spent two wonderful years there and I would not have liked to leave but, as I told in the book, they “forced” me to go to Paris.

“We won; I became top scorer, a great club, a great atmosphere. And there was the old guard. Incredible players with whom I was lucky to play and win. And I know what it means to win in Italy. It is everything to win. I managed with the three biggest clubs in Italy, Juventus (the two revoked championships, ed ), Milan and Inter. At Milan they treated me well: I came from Barcelona where I had experienced sadness and in Milan they gave me back my smile. I wanted to repay you. ”

So we go to Milan or not? “I do not say no and I do not even say yes. We’ll see…”

Ibra is undoubtedly one of the big stars that missed out of the Russia 2018 World Cup  and  he gave a vivid explanation about  the relationship with the national team and his country: “I am still convinced today that if I had called Svensonn, things would have gone differently and I would have had a few more possibilities. But I recognize that it stimulated me a lot, I had to be ten times better than the others to reach the same goals. And being discriminated against has pushed me to work like crazy. ”

“I feel” the new Swede “and I think I represented Sweden with a lot of honour. If I had a different surname, they would certainly have protected me more, but I have never asked for favourable treatment, only to be treated like everyone else. ”

“There’s a wrong education and people are not well informed. I play football and give joy with a ball. I’m not a politician because I do not know how to be a politician. We are in 2018 and the world is a mix and that’s okay. We must accept change and appreciate it.

“With my work I believe I have opened the door to many people like me, who did not feel loved or welcome, the different, and the migrants. Then everyone makes their own choices, but I am living proof that with work and commitment everyone can succeed and emerge.”

  • Russia 2018: Enjoy yourselves without me – Zlatan

Sweden’s former striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, said on Thursday that the country’s team to the World Cup in Russia would enjoy less pressure without him in the squad.

He told reporters in Moscow that his absence in the team would reduce expectation from the players at the tournament.

“I think Sweden; they have less pressure when I’m not there, because when I’m there we’re supposed to win everything.

“Just enjoy. No pressure, because I’m not there,” the 36-year-old said.

The LA Galaxy forward, who played 116 times for Sweden over 15 years, was in Moscow to promote Visa card-less payment systems.

Sweden are in Group F with world champions, Germany, Mexico and South Korea and will open their account against the Koreans on Monday in Nizhny Novgorod.

Germany, though, will be the mountain to climb.

“Germany is the Deutsche-machine. You know they will do well, and they always do well,” Ibrahimovic said.

“I always say a good team doesn’t have 11 players, they have 22 fantastic players.

“With Germany, it’s not like you have a star; I think the team is the star, and that’s why they’re so strong.”

He also said Brazil “will do something out of the limits” as they looked to rebound from their 7-1 nightmarish thrashing by Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-finals in their own country.

  • Russia 2018: Ibrah set for U-turn on retirement

With 59 days to the World Cup in Russia, the fever is gradually catching up and players can hardly wait to get into action in the World’s greatest show piece.  One player that is ready to removed the retirement toga is former Manchester United ace and Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Ibrah who recently joined MLS side LA Galaxy has dropped a huge hint that he is bound for this summer’s World Cup after saying chances of playing for Sweden in Russia are ‘skyhoga’, which is Swedish for ‘sky-high’.

The 36-year-old striker sent the characteristically audacious message to his five-million Twitter followers on Sunday, suggesting he is ready to come out of international retirement to play at one more major tournament.

He said: ‘The chance of me playing in the World Cup is skyhoga #FifaWorldCup2018.’

Ibrahimovic has not played for Sweden since the European Championships in France two years ago, where they finished rock bottom of their group after collecting just one point.

It was a disappointing conclusion to a record-breaking international career , he is Sweden’s all-time top goalscorer with 62 goals and 116 caps — and Ibrahimovic seems set on returning for a final flourish.

Having scored three goals in three games for his new club LA Galaxy, Ibrahimovic has already suggested he would play for Sweden at the World Cup if he ‘feels well’.

He said: ‘I want to play football, we’ll see what happens. They call me every day, they ask me how am I doing, but we need to take a step at a time. I repeat if I feel well and if I want to, I’ll be there.’

Sweden were mightily impressive in qualifying for the World Cup, denying Holland a play-off place in Group A before famously beating four-time winners Italy over two legs.  It was the first time since 2006 that they have reached the finals.

They face a tough task getting out of the group stages at the tournament; however, after they were drawn against defending champions Germany, Mexico and South Korea.

Should Ibrah’s dream become a reality, he will not be the first player to make retirement U-turn for the sake of the World cup.  compatriot Henrik Larsson did so not just once but indeed twice ahead of Korea/Japan 2002. Also in the category are Cameroon’s Roja Milla, Jamie Carragher, Claude Makelele among others.

  • Zlatan departure a big loss for European soccer – Mourinho

European soccer has lost a “huge player” in Zlatan Ibrahimovic but the striker will raise the level of the game in the U.S following his move to LA Galaxy, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said on Friday.

Ibrahimovic last week ended a short but successful stint at United where he won the League Cup and the Europa League.

The striker has become the latest high-profile player to move to the MLS, following the likes of David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Thierry Henry and Frank Lampard.

Mourinho used his news conference ahead of Saturday’s English Premier League game against Swansea City to pay tribute to the talismanic Swedish forward who he previously coached at Inter Milan.

“For me it’s always sad when the big players move towards the end.

“I remember Luis Figo’s last match with me and Inter, it was one of my saddest moments.

The Zlatan goodbye was more in that direction, he’s a huge player that European Football has lost.

“But this period with LA Galaxy will be very good for him, he will be good for American football, because of what he can do; his personality, his passion and his professionalism,” Mourinho told reporters.

Ibrahimovic sustained a bad knee injury in United’s Europa League quarter-final against Belgian side Anderlecht last April but returned to make seven appearances for the Old Trafford side this season.

“His recovery was an example of what a professional should be,” Mourinho added.

“For him (the move to U.S.) will just be a way to enjoy the last couple of years of football.”

United will be without back-up goalkeeper Sergio Romero for the weekend’s game, after the Argentine international picked up a knock in his country’s 6-1 friendly defeat by Spain.

Ashley Young was also injured on international duty with England but could play against Carlos Carvalhal’s 14th-placed side.

United are second in the table on 65 points from 30 games as they bid to finish as runners-up to champions-elect Manchester City.

  • Ibrahimovic gets LA Galaxy super welcome

Zlatan Ibrahimovic received a hero’s welcoming at the LA International Airport Friday as he touched down to resume his sojourn with MLS side LA Galaxy

On hand to receive the Swede who is the club’s latest addition were club officials, fans and the mediaAn LA Galaxy press conference introducing Ibrahimovic will be held later

Manchester United agreed to mutually part ways with  Ibrahimovic earlier this month, paving the way for the 36-year-old striker to complete his move to the west coast of America.

He follows in the footsteps of former team-mates David Beckham and Andrea Pirlo, who also made the transatlantic switch, as well as Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

Ibrahimovic has won four domestic league titles during a glittering career to date which has seen him play for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain among others, after starting out at homeland club Malmo.

The MLS season began earlier this month and Ibrahimovic is available to make his debut for his new club against city rivals LAFC on Saturday March 31

LA Galaxy captain Ashley Cole, formerly of Chelsea, has backed Ibrahimovic to adapt to life in MLS and become one of the top strikers in the league.

“I think it’s great news to have a big personality, a big player not just for LA Galaxy, but certainly for the MLS to make this league even bigger,” said Cole.

“Some people talk about the age, but for me it’s a great signing and hopefully the young lads here can learn off him.

When asked what kind of impact Ibrahimovic will have, Cole added: “I think a big one. If he stays fit and gels quicker than some players have then I think he’ll be great.

“I think he has every attribute to be one of the best strikers in the league and hopefully he can score some goals.”

  • Ibrah ‘the lion’ roars in new commercial

Former Manchester United ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic may someday venture into movie making after he thrilled in a commercial for a betting company.

The 36-year-old, who recently  signed for LA Galaxy following the expiration of his contract at Old Trafford , can be seen in the advert squaring off with an enemy before ending hostilities with afternoon tea in a strange turn of events.

The Bosnian advert is all in the name of gambling website Bethard, which has enlisted Ibrahimovic as one of their newest members.

The advert begins with some sinister music and a mysterious figure leaping around and crawling through a dilapidated warehouse that is on fire.

He then comes across a statue of a lion that is at the end of a path surrounded by fire. The figure pulls out a type of bazooka and proceeds to fire a rocket into the lion.

The statue explodes but Ibrahimovic, looking extremely chiselled emerges from the dust and confronts his enemy with a roar, fitting for someone who has called themselves a lion previously.

After a brief standoff and some words exchanged in Bosnian, the pair appear to forget what had brought them to this point and instead made amends with a pleasant afternoon tea.

Ibrahimovic took out a full-page advert in the Los Angeles Times to confirm his move to Major League Soccer after United agreed to cancel the final three months of his contract.

He has left Old Trafford after just a season-and-a-half in the Premier League to move to the USA after only managing seven appearances in his second season in England.

Ibrahimovic joined on a free transfer in the summer of 2016 and proved an instant success, scoring 28 goals in his debut campaign and helping United secure a League Cup and Europa League double before injuries struck.

I and Ibrahimovic kicked each other in training – Rojo

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has revealed that he and Zlatan Ibrahimovic kicked themselves in training.

The duo returned to the first team squad two weeks ago after picking up injury in a Europa League match against Anderlecht in April

And According to the Argentine defender, Coach Jose Mourinho has warned the two to desist from kicking each other in order to avoid injuries.

“[Mourinho] always tells us to play calmly in practice because, with Ibrahimovic, we kill each other with kicks,” Rojo, as quoted by Marca.

On his relationship with Ibrahimovic, Rojo described the Sweedish striker as an ‘amazing character,’ who is always happy

Rojo added: “He’s always happy and close to the players. He helped me a lot. He got the best out of me.”

“He’s a phenomenon, he’s a beast who goes forward and wants to win everything.”
