PDP Gov candidate votes, slams INEC, security agencies

    By Rasaq Ibrahim, Kiribo

The candidate of the People Democratic Party(PDP) in Ondo governorship poll Agboola Ajayi has cast his vote at Apoi Ward II, Unit 004 in Kiribo, Ese Odo local government area.

Agboola with wife arrived at the polling booth around 10:36 am and allowed to vote before others who were in the queue.

The couple was accredited at about 10: 45 am for voting and chatted briefly with voters before leaving the polling unit with his black Jeep.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote, Agboola expressed displeasure over the conduct of the excercise, alleging gross irregularities in the ongoing governorship poll.

He accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies of compromising the election in favour of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Agboola said that the preliminary report from across the 16 local  government areas has shown the election so far was far below the standard, asking the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu to resign for conducting the most corrupt election in Nigeria’s political history.

He described the exercise as not only a sham but also synchronised attempt to murder democratic process, alleging that the stronghold of  PDP chieftains were militarised to intimidate the voters from exercising their franchise.

He said: “If INEC cannot successfully organize election in just one state, then you must know that we are running into anarchy in Nigeria.

“I have been getting reports across the state and it is same, including me , I am a victim here in my unit and I want to say it is deliberate on the part of the REC and the INEC and don’t forget we have said earlier that we don’t trust Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola who is the REC ; she can’t be fair.

“The system is compromised and there are complaints everywhere in the state including vote-buying , BVAS not working and don’t forget the machine is a rigging tools for them. It is a very shameful exercise and I think Nigerians should just call on INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, if he can’t do the job, he should honorably resign because the system is totally compromised, this is sad.

“Under Professor Attahiru Jega as INEC chairman, our electoral process was getting to that international standard but Professor Yakubu has drawn us back , this is sad and Nigerians are not happy.”

On the security situation, the PDP candidate said: ” From my community here it is peaceful but accused the military operatives deployment more men to his area and I would take it up with the brigade commander. They can’t be intimidating the voters. How do you station seven to 10 armed soldiers; we are not at war here !

“On the voters turn out, despite the intimidation, people were willing to vote because they are frustrated already with things in the state and the country.”

He expressed displeasure over the delay he experienced before he could vote due to BVAS malfunction, saying ” The system is not perfect, things are not working and it took more than 10 minutes before the BVAS could accredit me”.

  • ZLP will shock PDP, APC  in Ondo poll, says Mimiko

ZLP will shock PDP, APC  in Ondo poll, says Mimiko

Dr. Abbas Mimiko younger brother of former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, is the governorship candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in the November election. In this interview with OTABOR OSAGIE explains why he did not join his brother to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party PDP.

Why are you in the Ondo governorship race when it is the turn of Ondo South to produce the next Governor?

I am of the firm belief that this idea that it is the turn of the South, Central or North is very primitive. I think it is the turn of the best candidate that will better the lots of the people. I do not share that philosophy that power must rotate among the senatorial districts or the time for power to go to the South or to the North. There has never been any time that there will be an election that the North or the South will not contest. Ditto when the Centra was contesting, North and South were in contention. What is important is for us to ask if this is the life we want to live in? When the sea is calm, anyody can hold the mast but in turbulent waters, you need a capable captan to pilot the ship to safety. We are in troubled times in Ondo State. That is why we are running. We know we can change the lots of this state. We have programme that will change the trajectroy of this narration.

Are you running on the popularity of your brother, former Governor Mimiko?

That is an intresting question. I am proud to be a Mimiko but I am Dr. Abbas Mimiko. I am a medical doctor. A Psychiatrist by practice, I am a businessman, I am an agroprenuer. I dont know what you mean by asking whether I am running on someone else’s popularity. I grow up in Ondo State. I was born here and raised here. I had my primary education here. I did my secondary education here. I attended the University of Lagos. I practiced in Ondo State for years before I went to the United States of America for my specialist training. I am back to Ondo State, doing my business and farming. Why do I neeed the popularity of anyone to run for office. He was a great Governor. he has ran his era, his era terminated seven eyars ago. I am my own man. People of Ondo State know me very well. In character, they know me to be a man of intergity. They know me to hands on and a leader who leads from the front.

Why did you choose to contest under the ZLP?

The Zenith Labour Party was not a contraption from the blues. We sat down some years ago to start a new party that will actually represent social democratic ethos that we say we belive in. I sat there when ZLP was formed. I was part of the formation of the ZLP. It is logical that if I want to run, that will be my choice party.

But the former Governor collapsed ZLP structure into PDP ahead of the 2023 general elections.

That proved the point that I am my own man. I don’t pander to anybody. We were in ZLP together and he moved to the PDP. I remained in ZLP. We are the party that actually represent what our people needs. He doesn’t ask me things like that. We take our independent decisions regarding politic issues. For exxample, in the last presidential election, I was a staunch supporter of President Bola Tinubu, he supported someone else.

We are still brothers. We get along. He does not dictate what I do in terms of philosophy, in terms of political trajectory. If he moved out of ZLP, how does that influence the fact that we are going to win an election.

Do you seek advise from him as you journey in the governorship race?

Advice from him? I have under studied Dr. Olusegun Mimiko for 40 years. With my level of education and exposure, there is nothing in his arsenal I do not know already. I am my own man. If I become Governor, some of the beautiful projects and programmes he introduced will be brought back like the Safe Motherhood, free maternal care, free medical care for children zero to six years, which we planned together when he was Governor. Definitely, I will reenact those programmes and those projects. Does that mean I am being spoonfed by him, far from it. These were ideas we conceived togeher that he implemented.

In the 2020 governorship election, the ZLP came a distant third. Any changes now?

The ZLP of 2020 is not the ZLP of 2024. As you recall, look at the APC primary, everything mumbled jumbled. rigged all the way. every single one had a complain. The PDP primary was mere shamble. Look at the ZLP primary. It was peacefully conducted and thoroughly supervised by INEC at the Ward and State level. We had decent primary. Not a single soul contested any element of our primary. We are represented in the 203 Wards of Ondo State. We are strong everywhere and we carry the people’s agenda. APC in Ondo State has nothng to offer to the people. What do they offer? They took maternal care for pregnant women from free service to a service where you have to pay N300,000 for ceasarian session. We are telling the people we will take it back to zero kobo for safe delivery. They took school buses away from children. They parked them to rot away in yards of government. We are not only going to revamp the idea of free shuttle buses, we are going to buy new buses frour children free ride to school. A party that is asking for vote on the fact that a pregnent woman must die if she cannot come up with N3000,000 if she needs ceaserian session. That is what they are sellng. A gvernment that bulldozed cocoa plantation of 20 years. The President’s duty is not come and grow food for Ondo State, he is to make the environment conducive for doing that. Look at Niger State. When they wanted to do massive agriculture, didn’t the President support them? Didn’t he backed them with all the international connections. Are they not doing great in agriculture? You expect the President to come and use hoes and cutlasses to come and grow food for us in Ondo State. The APC in Ondo State has nothing to offer the people. The PDP has nothing to offer the people. We come with a mantra of the seven K’s of prosperity and people are marchng onto it.

You still talk about providing free services when resources are no longer available

The biggest lie people tell you is to take the western world model and craft it on our system. The UK has free health services. America has subsidies health care for a segment of the society. We are not saying everything will be freee but it is our responsibility as a social Democratic platform to make sure nobody falls through the crack.

We help the wealthy get wealthier but we must uplift the poor and the downtrodden. In the health service, every pregnant woman must deliver safely. Free maternal care is a thing of religion for us. It is our responsibility to God and man that every pregnant woman in Ondo State must deliver safely either in ceaserian session or normal delivery, we will spare nothing to provide free maternal care. Children that are between ages of zero to six whihc is a citical time for their development, we will give them free health care. But for able bodied men, we will have health insurance you can buy into. Pay little premium so that you can access health care services at subsidise rate. Elderly people will get accss to free health for basic needs but when it is compliccated

that requires surgery, then family can come together. We are not going to abandon our people on the mantra of World Bank and IMF that keep telling us in the third world we should follow their model that will keep us in perpetual slavery to them. We will be socially responsible, help the people when they need help and make sure the wealthy pay their dues to the society.

How well are you known in Ondo State?

Every household knows Dr. Abbas Mimiko. I have lived here, I have worked here. I am an employer of labour. I am a man of the masses. You came through my gate and did not see anybody harrasing you. I am a man of the people. I eat agbado (corn) with the common man. I pound yam in bukas. I am a man of the people. They love me and they are going to vote for me.

Do you have money for vote buying?

The element of destruction of our democracy is vote buying. Vote buying beyond someone collecting N20,000 on the day of election. You take N20,000 to go and vote PDP and you leave ZLP that is not going to do buying and selling of votes, you sold your destiny, the destiny of your family. They are boasting they will spend N20000, per vote. You collect N20,000, they go and root your cocoa farm. You collect N20,000, you go to pay N3000,000 for your pregnant wife at the hospital.

You will never have good governance where people do buying and selling of votes. It only means crooked billionaires or people who have access to government like a sitting governor will be able to wn election. They will never servcie the people. The will never provide governance. They will never provide any meaningful service because they do not need the mandate of the people. They will come on election day, pay their money, cash and carry the votes. The people are the ones to be educated on vote buying.

What is pushing you to serve the people?

I am a simple citizen of Ondo State who see that we are drowning. We are on the precipes. We are hanging on the cliff. I went to medical school in the University of Lagos. How much did I pay? I am the son of a farmer. My mother ran a buka yet I am Senior Consultant in Psychiatric because the system gave something to me, that is why we are trying to give something back. It is our duty to God that to whom much is given much is expected. I do not see myself as a politician. I see myself as a citizen of Ondo State who is saying we must not drown. We are created by God to live a decent happy life.

How many LG can you win?

The ZLP is strong in this state. Every local government will give us at least 25 percent of votes including Ilaje and Ese-odo where both the PDP and APC candidates come from. People of Ilaje buy expensive food. He who feels the pain knows it. We are in this collective conundrum of suffering in Ondo State. They are painting the President in dark image. The President wants you to come up with an agenda so that he backs you with federal authority both at the national and international level but these people are clueless. They would rather bring a bag of rice and give it to a whole street instead of bringing a paddy rice to plant something. You need a good head and a good heart to run effective government. A good heart is I want to do for the people, I have compassion but you have to have a good head that know how. Our leaders here are clueless about what development is. That is why they are getting everything wrong. That is why the suffering  in Ondo State is bigger than anywhere in Nigeria.

What will Ondo people get from the ZLP administration?

You must have heard about our seven Ks of prosperity. That is the sumary of our manifesto. The first is Karije, that is food secuiry for all. Karimu is portable water supply to every home in Ondo State. Karina means rapid aggessive industrialisation through production. An economy that does not produce cannot progress. We have Karile-lona which represents mass housing project in every local government area of the state and massive road construction. Karika means education that is of quality to the people of the state including compulsory vocational studies. We will have Kanilera means affordable health care for the citizens. Kalalaafia is the adequate peace and security for all citizens. Those are the seven Ks of prosperity of the ZLP.
