    Man docked over defamation of character

    A 50-year-old man, Opara Columba, was on Tuesday arraigned in a Kano Magistrates’ Court over alleged defamation of character.

    Columba, who resides at Church Road, Sabon Gari Kano, is standing trial on a count charge of defamation of character.

    He, however, denied committing the offence.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Yakubu Galadima, told the court that one Mr A.C. Agu, wrote a letter, dated May 30,2017, addressed to the Kano State Area Command, alleging that the defendant defamed his character.

    According to the prosecutor, the defendant told a lie against the complainant that he collected N40,000 from him.

    The defendant also alleged that the money was the complainant’s commission, as he was the caretaker of the house where the accused lives.

    “The house is located at Church Road, Sabon Gari Kano, “he said.

    Galadima said that the offence contravened Section 392 of the Penal Code.

    The Magistrate, Mr Zubair Inuwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N30,000 and two reliable sureties in like sum.

    He adjourned the case until July 5 for mention.

    Phone thieves jailed two weeks in Kano

    Two men – Izzudden Mohammed and Ridwan Sa’id – who stole a phone worth N4,000, are to spend the next 14 days in prison, a Kano Magistrates’ Court ruled on Thursday.

    Mohammed, 19, and Sa’id, 17, both residents of Badawa Quarters in Kano, were convicted after they were found guilty of a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft.

    Magistrate Zubair Inuwa, however, granted the convicts a fine of N2,000 each for conspiracy and N3,000 each for theft.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convicts had pleaded guilty to the charges.

    Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Yakubu Galadima told the court that the case was reported by the complainant, Bilal Ali of Badawa Quarters, Kano at Badawa Police Station on May 13.

    He said the convicts stole the phone inside a barber’s shop at Badawa Quarters, Kano.

    “During police investigation, the phone was found on the men.”

    The offences contravened Sections 97 and 287 of the Penal Code, Laws of the Federation.

  • Man remanded in prison for raping 8-year-old girl

    A Kano Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday remanded a 22-year-old man, Yusuf Ali, in prison for allegedly raping an eight year-old girl.
    Ali, who lives in Gama B Brigade Quarters Kano, was arraigned for rape.Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Yakubu Galadima, had told the court that oneJamila of the same address reported the matter at Gwagwarwa police Division Kano, on April 18.
    Galadima said that on April 16, the accused allegedly lured the little girl into his mother’s room situated at Brigade Quarters Kano.“The accused forcefully had unlawful sexual intercourse with the victim,’’ he said.
    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened section 283 of the penal code.
    Ali pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge.
    However, the Judge, Senior Magistrate Zubair Inuwa ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case till May 30, for mention.

     

  • Teenager remanded for allegedly defiling 9-year-old boy

    A Kano Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of 17-year-old boy in prison custody for allegedly defiling a 9-year-old boy.

    The defendant, who lives at Mandawari Quarters Kano, is facing a charge of `unnatural offence.’

    The Senior Magistrate, Zubair Inuwa, ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case until June 6 for mention.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Yakubu Galadima, told the court that one Sa’adatu Yahaya, of the same address reported the case at Mandawari Police Division Kano, on April 16.

    He said that on March 15 at about 8 p.m. the complainant noticed that her 9-year-old son was not feeling fine.

    “The victim told his mother that the defendant deceived and lured him into an entrance of a school situated at Mandawari Quarters.’’

    “He said that the defendant defiled him on several occasions.’’

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against him.

    Galadima said that the offence contravened Section 284 of the Penal Code.
