No Borno community under Boko Haram control – Zulum

    • Claims security has improved by over 85%

Borno State governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, on Friday, assured that the security situation in his state has improved by 85%, adding that no community is currently under the control of the terror group, Boko Haram.

Zulum disclosed this while speaking to journalists after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.

Borno State and most parts of the Northeast region of the country had been targets of Boko Haram and other terrorist organisations over the last 14 years, claiming hundreds of lives and leaving lives and livelihoods destroyed along the line.

Communities in Monguno, Banki, Jere, and Domboa council areas of the State have been the most terrorised by the various groups.

Asked about the true picture of the situation in Borno State in view of the recent reports of insecurity, Zulum said: “To be sincere and candid, the security situation in Borno State has improved by more than 85 percent. Economic activities are ongoing perfectly in Borno State.

“I just read some script a few days ago saying that insurgency is increasing in Borno State. The story is not right. The Nigerian army is giving us the desired cooperation, the police, the paramilitary as well as air force, and all other components of the Nigerian military are supporting us.

“But most importantly, I want to assure you that as the chief security officer of Borno State, the state is doing well in terms of security. There’s a serious improvement in our security situation. And I commend the service chiefs for their efforts and I commend the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Asked if he was reassuring that all is well with all the local government areas that used to be under the control of insurgents, the governor said, “Honestly speaking, none of the 27 local government areas of Borno State are under the control of insurgents.

“However, we have few local government areas that we want to ensure that people are completely resettled. Now, people are partially resettled there, especially Abadam Local Government and then Guzamala Local Government.

“But by and large, in terms of the security situation in Borno State, I think the government is doing very well, the Nigerian military is also doing very well. And then nothing has happened, we keep on improving,” he said.

    • Grants rent waiver to 8,000 traders

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum yesterday unveiled the rejuvenated Maiduguri Monday Market, after its destruction by fire on February 26, this year.

In a gesture of support, Zulum also declared that 8,000 traders who leased shops and pay rent through the market authority to the state government would be exempted  from payments for the next two years.

This compassionate move, The Nation learnt, seeks to alleviate the substantial losses these traders endured during the fire.

“As you may recall, the Maiduguri Monday market was ravaged by a destructive fire in February 2023. The Borno State Government established a committee to oversee the market’s reconstruction. Now, the market has been meticulously rehabilitated, with more than 8,000 traders poised to benefit from this revitalized space,” Zulum announced.

The market’s restoration involved a comprehensive redesign and expansion plan that has resulted in a more organised and accessible business environment.

With expanded walkways, designated zones for different product categories, and improved basic amenities, the market has been transformed into a shopper-friendly destination.

Zulum had allocated N2 billion to the committee responsible for overseeing market-related activities, in addition to an extra N1 billion in aid to the victims of the fire disaster.

He made another crucial announcement during the ceremony, pledging N800 million in support to 2,825 traders who were unable to secure shop allocations following the market’s transformation.

These traders had previously operated in temporary structures and market stalls, while some conducted their business without authorisation.

He added: “The committee recommended the remodelling of the market during the reconstruction process, as it was identified that market congestion contributed to the intensity of the fire incident, As a result of the remodelling, over 2,000 traders who previously operated at temporary sites, constructed unauthorized shops in prohibited areas, or failed to secure shops within the market will receive support. Specifically, more than 185 of them will be provided with N1 million each, 2,000 others will receive N300,000 each, and approximately 640 will be granted N100,000 each.”

Zulum assured the 2,825 traders that they would soon be allocated shops in a new market to be established in Maiduguri, further underscoring the government’s commitment to rebuilding and supporting the local economy.

  • Zulum’s 100 days wonder

    Zulum’s 100 days wonder

Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum’s name connotes competence, accountability, passion and resilience. He is one of the few public office holders who has shown that governance is not rocket science. The way he gdischarges his duties as the number one man in the state is worth emulating.

Despite a crisis-ravaged state, Zulum is not relenting in ensuring that the people who elected him into office are enjoying the dividend of democracy. He is doing that with love in his heart; those who never supported his bid to be governor have also commended him for his uprightness.

Ever since he assumed office in 2019, his style of leadership has been quite different. He is not the type that would relax and work from a safer haven; he is also on the move experience and sympathizes with people in the state who are going through hard times as a result of insurgency that has displaced many from their homes.

Marking the 100 days of his second term in office according to his campaign promise, he executed 77 projects, programmes, key releases and interventions. Zulum constructed four primary healthcare centres each of them with 30 beds capacity and nurses quarters. These primary healthcare centres are located at Limankara in Gwoza, Kaleri in Mafa, Zarmari in Konduga and Shuwari II in MMC. He also released N2 billion for disbursement of non-interest loans to civil servants. There is also the doubling of gratuities payment from N1.2 billion annually to N2.4 billion.

He procured 50 brand new patrol vehicles and 300 brand new motorcycles for security outfits, 30 city buses, and 25 coaster buses allocated to civil servants, procurement of 3,000 electric bicycles. He promoted the growth of agriculture with the procurement of 471 plough and harrows for 312 tractors, distribution of 100 trucks of fertiliser to farmers across the state, and the distribution of livestock feeds to 300 farmers in Jere, Konduga and Mobbar LGAs.

He also ensured the distribution of food palliatives to 120,000 households across Gwoza, MMC, Jere, Kukawa, Mafa, Bama and Damboa LGAs and the resettlement of IDPs from Bukarti and Jibrent villages at Molai 500 housing estate. He also commenced the reconstruction/rehabilitation of Mallam Killumuri village in Konduga, and Bama town phase II, construction of 72 units of two-bedroom flats in 12 blocks of storey buildings around Ramat Polytechnic and ensured the completion and equipping of 4 Vocational Training Institutes in Biu, Shani, Mafa and Magumeri towns.
