In a bold step toward reimagining Nigeria’s digital future, the 2025 edition of the TechNet Hackathon is officially set to commence on April 22, 2025. Scheduled to span four days of virtual collaboration and innovation, with a final demo and award ceremony, this second edition promises to push the boundaries of problem-solving in one of Africa’s most promising tech frontiers.
The upcoming hackathon, themed “Igniting Innovative Solutions for Nigeria’s Digital Future,” is poised to attract some of the nation’s most brilliant developers, designers, engineers, and changemakers, all of whom will converge, virtually, to prototype real-world, future-focused solutions across key areas often neglected in the mainstream innovation discourse. With a deliberate mission to challenge the status quo, TechNest 2025 will provide the platform for young talents and visionary minds to tackle problems that matter most to Nigerians, using technologies that can scale and sustain impact.
Speaking ahead of the event, Muhammad Abubakar, convener of TechNest 2025 Hackathon, emphasized that the initiative is a national call to action. As he addressed the press, he highlighted that Nigeria’s biggest potential lies in its tech-savvy youth and how that energy is directed toward critical but overlooked areas of development.
Abubakar said. “It’s about building what Nigeria needs. The tools are there, AI, blockchain, IoT, and clean energy, but what has been lacking is the deliberate focus on how these tools can serve our unique realities. TechNest was born out of that gap, and this year, we’re doubling down on it.”
Participants in this year’s edition will be challenged to tackle eight core focus areas, each one representing a pillar in the foundation of Nigeria’s digital transformation. From building artificial intelligence tailored to indigenous dialects and automating agriculture processes to crafting blockchain-based financial tools for the underbanked, teams will be diving deep into problem-solving zones that can shift the needle on economic inclusion and social equity.
The hackathon also aims to catalyze breakthroughs in sustainable urban planning, education reform through EdTech, affordable health access via HealthTech, and stronger digital trust through cybersecurity. With sustainability in mind, renewable energy innovations and civic technology for transparent governance will also take centre stage. Each solution will be judged holistically, blending innovation, execution, real-world impact, and scalability.
True to the spirit of inclusivity and accessibility, TechNest 2025 will kick off with three days of fully virtual collaboration where participants will pitch their ideas, form teams, and build working prototypes. The final day, set for April 26, will bring together selected finalists for a session, where three winners will emerge based on rigorous judging standards.
TechNest’s organizing team has announced that the judging panel will consist of leading technologists, investors, and policy thinkers, ensuring that the ideas are technically sound, practically viable and societally relevant.
