Three officials of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have been arrested at the Lagos port, The Nation has learnt.
The three officials were arrested a few days ago and detained at the Central Intelligence Unit (CIU) of the service over the unauthorised release of a container from the port.
The container, security sources at the port told our correspondent, was arrested and detained on the instruction of the Controller General of the service, Col. Hameed Ali (Retd) to stop illicit imports into the country.
The arrest was made barley a week after Ali said over 2,000 Customs officials had been sacked since he took over the leadership of the service.
The container was said to be loaded with dangerous tomato pastes.
The affected officials reportedly collected about N4million bribe before allowing the fake items to exit the port gate.
The dangerous goods hidden under sardines were said to have a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of over N50 million.
