Three policemen arrested over robbers’ escape from custody

Two Sergeants and a Constable have been detained by the police in Lagos after suspected robbers escaped under their watch.

The incident, which occurred at Isheri Osun Division, reportedly caused commotion at the station.

It was gathered that the two robbery suspects removed the roof of the cell where they were detained and escaped without the three policemen on duty knowing.

However, police authorities, it was gathered, suspected connivance of those on duty, who claimed they slept off.

The Nation learnt that the suspects’ escape from custody was discovered the next morning during routine cell inspection.

Before long, news of the suspects’ escape from custody filtered into the community, causing panic among residents, who said they had assisted the police to apprehend them.

To douse the tension, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Camelius Emodi led his men and arrest one Basiru Rabiu, who he claimed was one of them.

The suspect, who was charged before an Isolo Magistrates’ Court for alleged willful damage and escape from lawful custody, denied the allegation.

According to a senior policeman, an Orderly Room trial for the cops had commenced at Area M Command headquarters in Idimu.

He said: “If found guilty, they will be dismissed. The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has zero tolerance for impunity. How can two suspects break the roof and escape under their noses?”

According to the Spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), the fleeing suspects were arrested for stealing.

He said: “There was no case of armed robbery at Isheri Oshun, rather, stealing was reported and the case has now been charged to court.
