Timeline of recent Shi’te clash with security agencies

  • Zaria, Kaduna State  (December 14, 2015)

Event: Soldiers and Shi’ite protesters clash when they blocked the convoy Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai. This led to a military crackdown, resulting in the deaths of over 300 IMN members, including women and children. The IMN leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, was arrested during the incident.

  • Abuja (January 2018)

Event: IMN members staged protests demanding the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky. These protests led to confrontations with security forces, resulting in casualties on both sides.

•Kaduna Clash (April 2018)

Event: A clash with policemen by Shi’ite members demanding the release of their leader  El-Zakzaky.

  • Abuja (October 2018)

Event: Shi’ite members clash with soldiers following an attack on a military convoy.

  • Abuja Police Headquarters (July 22, 2019)

Event: IMN members clashed with police at the headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force during a protest demanding the release of El-Zakzaky.

  • Abuja Protest (January 2020)

Event: IMN members resumed protests in Abuja, leading to clashes with security agencies. The protests were again centered around the demand for the release of El-Zakzaky and his wife.

  • Kaduna Clash (October 2020)

Event: During a procession to mark the annual Ashura, a significant day in the Shi’ite calendar, IMN members clashed with police in Kaduna.
