‘Treat schools as businesses’

School owners have been advised to make the new academic session more educative and profitable at a national teachers’ conference.

They were taught on how to rebrand their schools, develop income generating strategies, school budget and accounting, among others.

The conference, which was organised by J-NET Educational Training Services Limited, held at Anatole Private School, Shangisha, Lagos.

One of facilitators, Mr Joshua Falade, charged the teachers to set a good standard while maximising profit.

“A school should not count in terms of numbers of pupils. You do not need to bring down your school fees because you want a larger number. If the fee is too low, you will attract all categories of people. Set a standard.

“Many of us do not know that education is a lucrative business.  Many are not making the money because of income leakages. Many of us do not know that the school has a separate life. If you are going to manage the school, you must understand that the school is a different entity.  You need to set a realistic financial goal and the goal must be aligned with your expenses in the school,” he said.

J-NET Director, Mr Bart Olugbodi, said the programme was organised to give the teachers insights on how to creatively improve their schools as they resume for a new academic session.

He said the training will be done yearly basically to bring fun and creativity into the education system.

Olugbodi noted that instability of government policies, politics, economy and even technology were challenges of the education system.
