Cristiano Ronaldo saved Manchester United in the Champions League again as his stoppage-time goal earned them an unlikely 2-2 draw away to Atalanta on Tuesday.
Duvan Zapata had scored one and set up another for the hosts as they looked set to avenge the 3-2 defeat against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side a fortnight ago, but Ronaldo scored a third late winner in only four Champions League appearances since returning to United in the summer.
That draw puts United top of Group F on head-to-head thanks to their 2-1 win against Villarreal in September.
Atalanta went ahead on 12 minutes when a mistake by United goalkeeper David de Gea allowed Josip Ilicic to convert Zapata’s cross.

Raphael Varane departed injured in the 36th minute. The France international was replaced by Mason Greenwood as United switched formations from 5-3-2 to 4-3-3.
Cristiano Ronaldo pulled the visitors level in first-half stoppage time with a close-range goal after linking up with Bruno Fernandes to great effect.
Zapata had Atalanta in front again on 56 minutes when a ball over the top caught the United defence out of position allowing the Colombia international to beat Harry Maguire and score.
And although it was Atalanta rather than United who looked more likely to score next, with Zapata and substitute Luis Muriel both wasting opportunities, Ronaldo found the back of the net with a volley to rescue a point.
