Unemployed man arraigned for burglary

A 23-year-old applicant, Michael Olaniran, was on Friday arraigned at the Epe Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly breaking into a house with intent to steal.

Olaniran, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of attempt to commit felony, burglary and entering a residence with intent to steal.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Vincent Ikwuekwe, said Olaniran committed the offences on April 25, at 10:00 a.m. at Jibril Estate, Ajah area of Lagos State.

Ikwuekwe alleged that the accused broke into the apartment of one Miss Justine Ukaegbu and attempted to steal her valuables.

“She caught the accused in her bedroom, going through her things, but before she could raise an alarm, he escaped through the ceiling.

“We were able to apprehend the suspect because she identified him as a resident of the estate,” the police prosecutor said.

According to Ikwuekwe, the offences contravened Sections 308, 310 and 406 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and punishable under same.

The Magistrate, Mrs. S.A. Gbajumo-Ayoku, granted the accused bail in the sum of N150,000, with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case till May 11 for further hearing.
