Unijos postpones examination

The University of Jos has postponed its first semester examinations following last Saturday’s fire which affected the library complex and some faculties.

Among faculties destroyed were Social Sciences and Management Sciences.

A statement yesterday by the Registrar, Mr. Monday Danjem, said the decision was taken pending an emergency Senate meeting today.

He, however, urged students and members of the university community to remain calm, noting that the situation has been brought under control.

The Vice Chancellor Prof Seddi Sebastian Maimako said relevant documents, including yet-to-be-marked first semester scripts, were burnt.

Maimako, who visited the scene yesterday morning with top management officials, cried when he saw the ruins.

Addressing reporters at the univeristy’s Senate Chambers, Maimako said: “We received report of the incident around 6.30 pm and immediately alerted the Plateau State Fire Service, Government House,  Airforce and other individuals.

“We have summoned an emergency meeting for tomorrow (today) to take appropriate action as students were still sitting for exams.”

The vice chancellor, however, said investigation is on to ascertain the cause of the fire.
