UPDATED: Two confirmed dead as Bauchi imposes curfew over violence

Bauchi State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in the wake of the fresh crisis which claimed two persons on Saturday in the Tsakani and Kagadama areas of Bauchi metropolis.

The Nation reports several people were also injured in the violence that occurred due to a rivalry between youths of Angular Taya and Tsakani areas of the communities.

It is the second time in less than one month that the government is imposing curfew on communities around the Bauchi metropolis after that of Gudun Hausa in April.

Police operatives comprising Tactical teams, Mobile Police Force, Rapid Response Squad(RRS), and Quick intervention Unit(QIU) of the Bauchi Command were sighted at the flashpoint areas when our correspondent visited.

Residents, who spoke to our correspondent, said they could barely sleep as gunshots were heard in the early hours of Saturday.

They said some of them fled to the Yelwa Police Division barracks along Bauchi Dass road to take refuge.

The Nation learnt that four men were hospitalised following gunshot injuries.

Commissioner of Police Umar Mamman Sanda disclosed the curfew arrangement during an on-the-spot assessment of the area where the crisis occurred.

The Commissioner said that preliminary investigation revealed the disturbances emanated following a rivalry amongst the youths of Anguwan Yaya and Yalwan Tsakani which extended to other parts of Yelwa.

He confirmed two persons died while five houses were burnt while four persons sustained various degrees of injuries.

The CP added that the Police will enforce the 24- hour curfew imposed by the State Government while appealing to the general public for calm.
