Wike: arrested vandals will face the law

Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike yesterday vowed that those arrested for their alleged involvement in the removal of sewage manhole covers on highways would be dealt with to serve as a deterrent to others.

Also, he said the government will ensure that buyers and users of the vandalised manhole covers and other vandalised public infrastructure will be apprehended and prosecuted for sabotage.

Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the Minister, Lere Olayinka, said in a statement said no fewer than 50 suspects had been nabbed for vandalism and theft of manhole covers within the FCT and recovery of 25 vandalised manhole covers.

He said this was a demonstration of the Territory Administration’s zero tolerance for criminalities, particularly vandalism of public amenities.

The Minister, who commended the security agencies for their prompt and decisive actions, described their collaborative efforts as “fantastic” and a further assurance to the residents of the FCT that their lives and properties are secured.

He also commended Nigerians for showing patriotism in speaking against the vandalisation, adding: “safeguarding public amenities is first and foremost, the duty of Nigerians, who are the owners and users of the amenities.”
