Six persons have reportedly died and 65 injured as a result of windstorms and heavy downpour in Kafin Hausa town, Kafin Hausa Local Government Area in Jigawa State.
Report from the state indicate that the disaster occured on Thursday night where over 1,300 houses were also destroyed.
Speaking to Tribune Online, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Development and Social Inclusion, Alhaji Hamza Muhammed, said the disaster also damaged some parts of the area’s General Hospital, water facilities and schools.
“From the assessment report I received yesterday, apart from these over 1,300 houses, the windstorm also damaged the rooftop of the Kafinhausa General Hospital maternity and emergency wards and those of some schools in the area.
“It also brought down some of the water facilities’ overhead tanks, as well as one telecommunication mast in the area,” Muhammad said.
The aide further explained that the state government, in collaboration with State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), have moved to the area since Wednesday, assessing the level of damage caused by the disaster.
This, according to him, is to enable the government and the agencies ascertain the extent of destruction caused by the disaster, with a view to intervene and provide succour to the victims.
Muhammed said a comprehensive report of the situation on ground will be submitted to the state government for prompt action.
He also said the state ministries of Health and Water Resources have visited the area, assessed the level of damages on their Infrastructure and directed for immediate repairs.
