Witness’ ill-health stalls Lagos tribunal proceedings

The Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal yesterday adjourned proceedings due to the ill-health of an unnamed Labour Party (LP) witness.

The witness was scheduled to testify before the three-member tribunal headed by Justice Arum Ashom. But at the resumption of proceedings, LP’s lawyer, Idowu Benson, who also held the brief of Olumide Ayeni (SAN), counsel to LP’s candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, told the tribunal that the witness could not testify on account of il-health.

He said the witness was in court earlier, but had to leave for medical attention when his health condition deteriorated before proceedings began.

Benson prayed the court to grant the party an adjournment.

He said: “The witness complained of feeling ill after waiting for some time and then excused himself that he needed to go to the hospital. We have informed the other counsel and crave their understanding.”

Counsel to the fourth respondent, Norrison Quakers (SAN), alongside the other respondents’ counsel, conceded to the counsel’s request, saying he would not object since it was a health-related issue.

Quakers said: “The witness of the tribunal had a health challenge; if tomorrow is convenient we can come back tomorrow, except they have another witness.”

Justice Ashom granted the LP’s request and adjourned till July 6.
