A middle-aged woman, simply identified as Obiora, has been delivered of twins in one of the 28 emergency shelters for flood victims in Ogbaru Local Government of Anambra State.

Obiora, from Umuezeoma, was delivered of a boy and girl.

A nine-year-old girl, Benedicta Izuchukwu, has reportedly died in the flood.

The deceased, a primary three pupil of Light International School, Okoti, allegedly drowned at Amiyi.

The Transition Committee Chairman of Ogbaru, Arinzechukwu Awogu, who confirmed the incidents, said: “Yes, a woman was delivered of twins; both mother and children are in good condition. The government has evacuated them to the Comprehensive Health Centre at Atani for proper attention.

“We also recorded a casualty elsewhere. A nine-year-old girl was carried away by flash flood at Amiyi, Ogbaru. Her body has been recovered and buried.”

The deceased’s father, Uzo Izuchukwu, said his daughter was trying to scoop water with a bucket when she got caught in.

He said efforts by Benedict’s elder sister, Chukwuemelie (11), to rescue her nearly resulted in double tragedy but for passers-by.

“She was still alive when she was brought out of the water but the three hospitals they rushed her to could not provide oxygen to revive her,” he lamented.
