Women urged to be active in politics

Women

Somen have been urged to get more active in politics and to seek key leadership roles in their communities.

Senior State Counsel, Rivers State Ministry of Justice and Chairperson, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Rivers branch, Mrs. Adata Bio-Briggs, made the call at the monthly virtual ‘Destiny Moment With Eunice (DMWE)’, an arm of Stop Hurting People Foundation.

According to her, one of the ways in which women can take their rightful position is by cultivating the attitude of early participation, understanding the tenacity of men in politics and mobilising both men and women for support.

She said: “There is need to build the capacity of women for good governance.

“They need to be actively involved in party politics and remain in the party and build structures.”

Convener of DMWE and President, Stop Hurting People Foundation, Mrs. Eunice Iferi-Chukwuemeka, lamented that although the laws are there, the issue of implementation is a serious challenge.

She said steps need to be taken to ensure that women participate actively in appointive and elective positions.

Conflict Resolution Consultant, Pastor Ladi Thompson, urged women to think outside the box.

According to him, women need to start organising and motivating both men and women, using what he called the power of nurture.

A Chartered Mediator and Arbitrator, Mrs. Nancy Obinwa, urged women to be active in grassroots politics.
