Yobe to blacklist contractors for sub-standard jobs

Yobe

The Yobe State Government will no longer work with contractors that deliver jobs below standard, the Commissioner of Basic Education, Mr. Sani Idris has said.

Idris spoke while taking delivery of over 2,000 double bunk beds and 1,500 desks constructed for secondary schools in Damaturu.

Dissatisfied with the quality of work done by the contractor, he requested the Director of Planning and that of Quality Assurance in the ministry to assess the work and report back in three days.

Idris said: “I am not a professional, I cannot ascertain if the quality of the job is 100 per cent good. From what I can see, I think the contractor has done his best.

“However, I am directing the Director Planning in the company of the Technical Director and Director Quality Assurance to report to me whether those chairs and beds meet the specification given to them or not.

“If they are not, then the distribution of the items should be halted until the contractor meets the specification. This has to be done within three days.”

The commissioner also warned all principals of secondary schools to ensure students don’t vandalise the furniture, stressing that, “henceforth, all principals will be responsible for any vandalisation of furniture in the schools.

“We should start a culture of maintaining government property and drift from the attitude of treating government property without regard”.

Idris stated that the idea of the ministry to ensure the specification and quality of the job is not targeted at witch-hunting any contractor but to ensure the government got value for money.

He added that the distribution of the furniture would commence as soon as he got the verification and certification report.
