Yola-Mubi Road: SGF orders contractor back to work

The contractor handling the rehabilitation of the Yola-Mubi Road in Adamawa State has been ordered to remobilise and complete the project.

The 194-km Yola-Mubi rehabilitation, which was awarded five years ago, is less than 50 per cent completed, making the journey between Yola and Mubi a nightmare as the uncompleted sessions have become worse than they were when the contract was awarded in 2017.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha, who took time off his Sallah holiday to inspect the project, expressed displeasure over the level of work by the contractor, AG Vision.

“I am very disappointed with your performance. It is the government that owes contractors and not contractors owing the government.

“This contract of Yola-Mubi Road was awarded in 2017 for N22 billion. Because of the slow pace of work, there was a review and this year another N29 billion was approved. We do not want another review, the company must return to the site or face the consequences,” the SGF said.

Stressing that the Federal Government remains committed to giving Nigerians good roads and other infrastructure, Boss Mustapha said to ensure that funding does not become a problem, the Federal Government has made plans with the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and other funding sources to also make funds available for the project because of the strategic position of the road.

He charged the contractor to mobilise back to work immediately after the Sallah holiday as he would be back within a week to ensure the implementation of the order.

The Minister of Transport, who is overseeing the Ministry of Works, Alhaji Mua’zu Sambo Aji also said the level of work is not acceptable.

“Your company is exhibiting incompetence,” the minister told the AG Vision management.

Francis Musa, the site engineer of the company, attributed the halt in work to the Salah brake and assured us that work would resume after the holiday.

The SGF also used the Sallah visit to his state to commiserate with the Lamido Adamawa, Alhaji Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa and the people of the state over the death of former OPEC Secretary-General Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo.

He was also at the EYN Church headquarters in Mubi to condole with the church and the family of Rev. Daniel Umaru whose two sons were killed by suspected kidnappers.
