No fewer than 10 market women were on Saturday afternoon crushed to death as a truck conveying chippings rammed into Nkwommiri Market in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State.

The incident also left scores of others severelly wounded, our correspondent learned.

It was gathered that the incident happened as a result of failed brakes.

The truck was said to have lost its brakes while it was descending from Anara Road heading towards Orlu and lost control.

It was said to have rammed into the roadside market and crushed the women who were trading on a roadside part of the market.

Village sources told our correspondent that some of the victims were crushed into a nearby river.

According to them, the community was battling to rescue those trapped in the truck and the vehicles it hit.

One of them said that the community was working with government officials to rescue those who had trapped.

When contacted, the police Spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, said that while the rescue mission was on going, ten persons had so far been confirmed dead.
