192 police officers trained in IED disposal in Nasarawa

The Nigerian Police Force said it has trained 192 of its officers selected from different commands across the country in Explosives Ordinance, Disposal (EOD) and Chemical Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) in Nasarawa State.

During the closing ceremony of the 19/2022 training in Nasarawa Eggon, at Police Mobile Force Training College, Ended Hills, Nasarawa State, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman said the essence was to develop the capacity of its men.

He said the completion of the EOD-CBRN training school in Maiduguri, Borno State remains the priority of the current administration.

The IGP, who was represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Department of Operations, DIG Bala Zama Senchi, said the priority was given to this programme in line with the IGP’s vision of capacity building across the force.

The IGP said the training has exposed participants to current methods and methodology in preventing, detecting, interdicting and responding to threats associated with IEDs, unexpected ordinances and nuclear terrorism.

“The training curriculum was well packaged to improve, re-invigorated EOD-CBRN operations across the country and bring out the best future EOD-CBRN technicians and investigators who will be ready to confront the present increasing threats,” he said.

He urged all successful trainees to translate the knowledge acquired from the training to their individual and collective contributions in stemming the tide of unlawful use of explosives, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear materials to perpetrate crimes in the nook and cranny of the country.

The Commissioner of Police EOD-CBRN Zannah Shettima said the training was aimed at building the capacity of the newly mobilised personnel for Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD) as well as Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) clearance and demolition operations.

He said the training was exclusively focused on providing basic EOD-CBRN knowledge and skills to the newly mobilised personnel in line with international standards.

“Acquaint trainees with safety and security guidelines in EOD-CBRN operations; develop trainees’ innate technical and analytical skills, and expose personnel to the emerging global threats of CBRNE.

“Re-orientate trainees to be team players and proficient in their duties, enhance participants’ physical fitness and mental alertness,” he said.

He expressed his confidence that the training has developed basic skills and proficient knowledge on chemical biological radiological, nuclear and explosive detection, identification, response and security as well as disposal and demolition techniques.
