Borgu leaders urge Tinubu to establish Military base in Agwara

Religious and community leaders from Borgu Kingdom in Niger State have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and federal security chiefs to establish a military base in Agwara Local Government Area, citing persistent bandit attacks in the area.

The leaders made the appeal during a press conference in Minna over the weekend, where they described the security situation in Agwara and parts of Borgu as a humanitarian concern requiring urgent federal attention.

Catholic Bishop of the Kontagora Diocese and Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, said the communities had continued to experience attacks that had resulted in deaths, displacement, and disruption of economic and educational activities.

He acknowledged previous directives by President Tinubu to security chiefs but expressed concern over what he described as a limited military presence in the affected communities.

“Our people are seeking help. We are appealing for increased security presence in Agwara, especially in Papiri town, to protect residents and key institutions serving surrounding communities,” he said.

Yohanna warned that the continued insecurity could undermine agricultural production in the area, which has traditionally been known for food production.

The appeal comes days after an attack on the Agwara Police Station, during which the facility was set ablaze. The incident also affected a church and reportedly led to abductions.

A community advocate and member of the Borgu royal family, Murtala Dantoro, said several communities had suffered attacks, resulting in loss of lives and disruption of livelihoods.

He also highlighted security concerns along the Mokwa–Bussa federal highway and in forested areas around the Kainji National Park, which he said posed challenges for security operations.

The leaders called on the Federal Government to designate Agwara and Borgu as security priority zones, deploy additional troops, and establish a fully equipped military base to improve response capacity.

They also urged the Minister of Defence to consider establishing forward operating bases for sustained presence, while calling on the Inspector-General of Police to rebuild the Agwara Police Station and deploy more personnel and equipment.

In addition, they appealed to the management of Kainji National Park to enhance security measures within the park, conduct joint patrols, and clear roadside vegetation to reduce the risk of ambushes.

Bishop Yohanna also called on the National Assembly to push for better weapons and ammunition for the military, while urging Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, and Minister of State for Agriculture, Sen. Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, to intervene swiftly.

The leaders also stressed the human cost of these attacks, which include families torn apart, children denied education, farmers unable to access their lands, and entire communities living in constant fear, noting that Borgu had historically been peaceful until men of the underworld infiltrated the area.

Dantoro urged residents to support vigilantes, provide intelligence, and maintain unity across religious and ethnic lines while remaining hopeful.

“Borgu Kingdom believes in Nigeria. We believe in your leadership. We believe that our cries will not fall on deaf ears.”

  • Borno CJ urges lawyers to embrace technology for effective justice delivery

Borno CJ urges lawyers to embrace technology for effective justice delivery

The Chief Judge of Borno State, Justice Kashim Zannah, has called on lawyers, particularly young practitioners, and other professionals to adopt technology as a vital tool for efficient justice delivery in the modern era.

Speaking at the National Executive Council Meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association in Maiduguri on Thursday, Justice Zannah emphasized that sound legal knowledge alone is no longer sufficient in an age increasingly driven by artificial intelligence.

He noted that while mastery of the law remains essential, legal practitioners must integrate and understand technological tools to enhance efficiency and ensure justice is properly administered.

“Technology is now an essential part of the tools for a lawyer and indeed every other profession. It is good to be sound and grounded in law, but you must embrace technology and acquire the basic knowledge required to function effectively in this AI age,” he said.

The Chief Judge also challenged senior members of the Bar to play a more active role in safeguarding the independence of the judiciary, particularly in their engagements with political leaders.

Justice Kasim advised “old lawyers,” Justice Kashim whom he  noted many of them serve as legal advisers to politicians across the country and therefore have a responsibility to educate their clients on the importance of a strong and independent judiciary.

“I have already given them a charge. They are lawyers to almost all the politicians in Nigeria. They should tell their clients that having an independent and well-respected judiciary is not for the benefit of judges, but for the benefit of the citizens of Nigeria,” he stated.

He pointed to Borno State as a practical example of judicial independence in action, urging skeptics to witness it firsthand.

“Here in Borno State, we have seen an example. It is no longer theory. They can invite their clients to come to Borno and see for themselves if they want,” Justice Kashim added.

The Chief Judge’s remarks underscore growing calls within the legal community for reforms that strengthen judicial autonomy while equipping legal practitioners with modern technological skills to meet contemporary justice demands.

  • Experts develop agricultural curriculum to strengthen BDS, boost food security

Experts develop agricultural curriculum to strengthen BDS, boost food security

Experts in Nigeria’s agricultural sector have begun the development of a specialised agricultural curriculum aimed at strengthening the Business Development Services (BDS) ecosystem and boosting food security across the country.

The initiative, under the Agra Ecosystem Development Programme, brought together stakeholders from across the six geopolitical zones to design a sector-specific curriculum for Business Development Service Providers (BDSPs) who will support agricultural small and medium enterprises (ag-SMEs).

Speaking at the workshop in Kaduna, the Rector of Kaduna Business School, Dr. Dahiru Sani, described the gathering as a structured curriculum development process rather than a conventional training.

According to him, the objective is to identify the competencies required to produce experts who can translate agricultural production into viable business ventures.

“We are not conducting a training. This is a DECU process, developing a curriculum using global standards. We are designing professionals who can convert agricultural efforts into real business value”.

Sani who is also project director for AGRA Ecosystem explained that participants included practitioners from major value chains such as rice, ginger, sorghum and cocoa, as well as experts in climate science, entrepreneurship, soil management, livestock production and academia.

He noted that while agriculture has received various forms of intervention in the past, little attention has been given to building a strong middle layer of business support professionals.

“Agriculture without a business outlook will go nowhere. If we give agriculture a business face, young people will begin to see opportunities in it. What we are doing is creating that middle layer of experts who can guide farmers and agribusinesses through market access, export processes, foreign exchange management and financial systems”.

He disclosed that the programme targets between 20,000 and 30,000 BDSP professionals who will be deployed across agricultural value chains nationwide.

Sani added that the initiative aims to facilitate the creation of about 100,000 agricultural businesses by strengthening enterprise capacity and leveraging opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“If we do not act strategically, Nigeria risks becoming a dumping ground, even within Africa. We must move from consumption to production and competitiveness”.

Also speaking, Officer at Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), Godswill Aguiyi said the curriculum was conceived to address critical gaps in existing BDSP training, which he described as too general and not tailored to the peculiar dynamics of agriculture.

“The agricultural sector has its own realities price volatility, climate change, policy shifts and limited access to finance. A generic curriculum cannot adequately prepare BDSPs to respond to these challenges”.

He identified poor record-keeping, lack of formal business structures, absence of bank accounts and inadequate documentation as major barriers preventing many agricultural SMEs from accessing finance.

According to him, equipping BDSPs with sector-specific knowledge will enable them to guide farmers toward better organization, improved productivity, reduced post-harvest losses and stronger market positioning.

He expressed optimism that improving efficiency and effectiveness within agricultural enterprises would have a broad impact on the economy, given the large percentage of Nigerians engaged in farming and related activities.

  • EU ends €750,000 digital skills programme in Borno, Yobe

EU ends €750,000 digital skills programme in Borno, Yobe

The European Union has concluded its digital skills promotion programme targeting women, hard-to-reach youth, and persons with disabilities in Borno and Yobe states.

The three years programme was aimed at advancing inclusive digital transformation and economic opportunity in the two states.

The programme aimed to reduce the digital gender divide and digital exclusion among women, youth, and persons with disabilities while strengthening community-level capacity in fragile contexts.

The closing ceremony, held in Maiduguri on 4 February, brought together stakeholders, including representatives of the European Union, implementing partners, civil society organisations, and state government officials, to reflect on progress achieved and lessons learned from the initiative.

Funded by the European Union with €750,000, the programme was implemented by ZOA International from 2023 to 2026.

It focused on narrowing the digital gender gap, expanding access to digital skills, and strengthening the capacity of grassroots civil society organisations across 30 communities in Borno and Yobe states.

Speaking at the closing ceremony in Maiduguri, the Head of Cooperation at the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Massimo De Luca, underscored the programme’s strategic focus on inclusive, people-centred digital development.

De Luca said: ““This project shows how well-targeted digital investments can deliver lasting impact—by empowering communities, strengthening local institutions, and supporting inclusive economic growth.

““Through the Global Gateway strategy, the European Union is backing practical, people-centred digital transformation that responds to local realities and leaves no one behind.”

He emphasised the importance of digital inclusion in conflict-affected regions.

De Luca said: “Digital inclusion is not a luxury; it is a necessity for resilience, innovation, and meaningful participation in today’s economy. For marginalised communities in conflict-affected regions, access to digital skills is essential to stability, opportunity, and long-term recovery.

“Looking ahead, the European Union wants initiatives like this to translate into real economic value. Our focus is on ensuring that skills, infrastructure, and innovation lead to viable enterprises, job creation, and durable economic resilience within local communities.”

Providing an overview of the programme’s outcomes, ZOA Programme Manager, Godwin Dominic said the initiative delivered measurable results across target communities.

“Over the course of implementation, the programme trained 18,193 individuals, established 32 IT hubs, and supported the formation of a Digital Literacy Working Group to strengthen coordination and sustainability.

“In addition, six schools were capacitated with access to IT services, expanding opportunities for digital learning and skills development across communities in Borno and Yobe states.”

Representing the Borno State Government, Executive Secretary of the Borno Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (BICTDA), Engr. Mohammed Kabir Wanori commended the programme for complementing state development priorities, strategies, policies, and strengthening opportunities for women and youth.

As the programme concludes, partners reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining the digital infrastructure, skills, and local capacity developed through the initiative, ensuring that its outcomes continue to support inclusive economic participation and community resilience in North-East Nigeria.

4,500 PDP, NNPP members defect to APC in Jigawa

No fewer than 4,500 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa State, attributing their decision to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s 12-Point Development Agenda.

The mass defection was formalized during a mini-ceremony held at the Manpower Development Institute (MDI), Dutse, led by APC chieftain and philanthropist, Alhaji Adamu Alhassan Indallahi.

Speaking on behalf of the decampees, former NNPP stalwart and ex-chairmanship candidate of Miga Local Government, Engr. Balarabe Umar, said the move was motivated by what he described as the visionary, people-centered leadership of President Tinubu at the national level and Governor Namadi in Jigawa State.

Umar noted that the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda and the 12-point agenda has begun delivering tangible socio-economic benefits, improving livelihoods, creating opportunities for youths, and repositioning governance for inclusive growth in the state.

“Our resolve is anchored on the visible impact of these policies on the lives of Nigerians and Jigawa people in particular. The direction is clear, and the results are evident,” Umar said.

He pledged the loyalty of the new APC members to the party and vowed to work tirelessly for the re-election of President Tinubu and Governor Namadi in the 2027 general elections.

“I assure the APC leadership of our total commitment. We will work round the clock to ensure the return of President Tinubu and Governor Namadi for a second term in 2027,” he added.

Earlier, Chairman of the Tinubu/Danmodi Automatic Ticket group, Alhaji Adamu Alhassan Indallahi, formally announced the figure of the defectors during the distribution of empowerment materials to beneficiaries at the same venue on Thursday.

Indallahi said the initiative was part of sustained efforts to support the re-election bid of President Tinubu and Governor Namadi, noting that their administrations have demonstrated an uncommon commitment to youth empowerment, economic recovery, and social development.

“We are convinced by the sincerity and focus of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Umar Namadi in improving the lives of youths and women through impactful projects and policies. That is why we formed the Tinubu/Danmodi Automatic Ticket group to mobilise support for their second term,” he said.

He disclosed that beneficiaries of the empowerment programme included orphans under the Tinubu/Danmodi Automatic Ticket Charity Foundation, youth groups, APC media teams, flag bearers, women groups, and Usman Bin Affan Islamiyya School in Harbo SA area of Jahun Local Government.

“As you can see, cheques amounting to N30 million were distributed. Some individuals and groups received N2 million, while N6 million was allocated to the Islamiyya School as part of our empowerment drive,” Indallahi explained.

Governor Umar Namadi, who was represented by the Commissioner for Basic Education, Alhaji Yunusa Lawan Danzomo, commended Indallahi for the initiative, describing it as a practical demonstration of support for good governance. He urged other political stakeholders to emulate the gesture.

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Students’ Affairs, Ambassador Salisu Seeker, lauded the empowerment programme, saying it would contribute significantly to tackling unemployment, poverty, and insecurity in the state.

He noted that no fewer than 1,200 youths, orphans, and Islamiyya school beneficiaries had so far benefited from the scheme, urging recipients to utilise the support judiciously while reaffirming his loyalty and support to Governor Namadi’s administration.

AbdulRazaq visits Kaiama, Woro, orders humanitarian support for terror victims

Kwara  Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has directed the state emergency management agency to mobilise support for victims of the Tuesday’s night terror attacks in Woro, Kaiama Local Government Area.

The Governor made the directive around 2 am on Thursday following his visit to the community where he commiserated with the victims, the Emir of Kaiama Alhaji Muazu Sheu Omar and people of Kaiama Emirate over the attack.

The Governor first arrived Kaiama on Wednesday night in company of Speaker Salihu Yakubu-Danladi, security commanders and senior government officials.

The Head of Woro, Alhaji Saliu Bio Umar, and his chiefs also joined the Emir to receive the Governor.

At least 75 people of the Muslim majority village died with  properties lost to the incident that occurred on Tuesday, the Governor told reporters shortly after receiving briefings from security forces and community leaders.

The Governor, who prayed for the repose of the deceased, announced the immediate deployment of soldiers to the area by the President under Operation Savannah Shield.

“We are very sad. We are here today to commiserate with your Royal Highness over the death of 75 of your subjects. May Allaah grant them Al-jannah Firdaus,” the Governor said at the Emir’s Palace on Wednesday.

“Your Emirate is versatile and from the information we have been getting, these victims were massacred, because they refused to succumb to a strange Islamic doctrine.

“This is different from what we used to see, where subjects were being kidnapped for ransom. This was a pure massacre. We commiserate with you.”

AbdulRazaq commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving an immediate deployment of a battalion of soldiers under ‘Operation Savannah Shield’.

“At the moment, the state emergency services will be going to carry out the enumeration and look for how to take care of the members of the family,” Governor AbdulRazaq said.

“We thank the security agencies for doing a yeoman’s job, swinging from one part of the state to the other. As such, the issues in Kwara South have been subdued largely.

“This is a major challenge to tackle now, because it goes beyond Kwara and goes (also) to the Kainji Park in Niger state. They have murdered sleep and I can assure you that within the next one month, the whole place will be flooded with soldiers. And the results will be positive, God willing.”

Muazu told the Governor that the attackers were followers of Mahmuda who preached strange ideology and attacked those who rejected their doctrine.

He appreciated the Governor for his swift action and support.

He said: “We, the people of Kaiama, are highly moved by Your Excellency’s presence to commiserate with us, bearing in mind that you just returned from a trip. What happened at Woro yesterday was very unfortunate…We lost a large number of people. We only pray for the repose of their souls,” the Emir said.

“We appreciate Your Excellency and the security team for this visit. This has given me further assurance that we are part of the whole system.”

Northern group rallies support for Tinubu’s reforms, spotlights youth, education, health gains

Kaduna witnessed a convergence of civic voices on Wednesday as the Arewa Political Awareness Movement (APAM) hosted a public sensitization programme on key government policies and reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at Asaa Pyramid Hotel.

Convener of APAM, Jabir T. Usman, said the forum was designed to replace rumours with facts and deepen citizens’ understanding of governance, insisting that democracy thrives when people are informed and actively engaged.

He said within two and a half years in office, the Tinubu administration had recorded measurable progress across education, healthcare, agriculture, security, infrastructure, and the economy, urging Nigerians to assess leadership by impact rather than rhetoric.

Usman identified the National Education Loan Fund (NELFund) as a landmark intervention that now allows children from poor and middle-income homes to access tertiary education without financial barriers, describing it as a breakthrough in Nigeria’s education system.

He also cited the new pension policy granting retired university professors earnings equivalent to their annual salary and the establishment of new federal universities of health and sciences in Kachia, Azare, Tsafe, and Funtua as steps to restore dignity to teaching and expand access to quality education.

According to him, the Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme is equipping youths with skills in data science, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing, positioning them for opportunities in the global digital economy.

In the health sector, Usman pointed to the restructuring of the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (NEMSAS), expansion of cancer treatment centres, revitalization of over 1,000 primary healthcare centers, and increased health insurance coverage as evidence of people-centred policies.

He said the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development and the ₦130 billion injection into the National Agricultural Development Fund were aimed at boosting food production, modernizing animal husbandry, and reducing farmer-herder conflicts.

On security, the APAM convener credited improved coordination among security agencies under the direction of the National Security Adviser for recent gains against banditry and insurgency in the North-West and North-East, enabling displaced communities to begin returning home.

He added that fiscal and monetary reforms, including exchange rate stabilization, increased federal allocations to states and the push for local government autonomy, were intended to bring development closer to the grassroots and stimulate economic growth.

Speaking on youth empowerment, Hon. Mukhtar Zubairu said the future of Nigeria depended on whether young people were equipped with skills and opportunities, warning that neglect could turn a demographic advantage into a social risk.

Zubairu highlighted federal initiatives such as 3MTT and the NIYA programme, alongside Kaduna State’s K-YEEP, vocational centres, digital hubs, and Youth Advisory Council, as examples of how leadership at different levels can create an enabling environment for youths.

He stressed that non-governmental organizations play a crucial “last-mile” role by reaching vulnerable groups, providing mentorship, and complementing government efforts through community trust, innovation, and accountability.

In a presentation on education reforms, Anas Halliru said the Renewed Hope Agenda had repositioned education as human capital investment through frameworks such as DOTS and the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), major investments in medical education, solar power for tertiary institutions, and sustained dialogue that has brought relative stability to universities, describing the reforms as “education in motion” for national development.

In fact , at the sittings, some were people of great honesty and of impeccable conduct ” he pointed out as he thanked the Sokoto state government under Governor Aliyu Sokoto for the rare privilege to be appointed as members of the commission to discharge the thorough assignment.

  • Lighting up Benue and the depth of Alia’s infrastructure transformation

Lighting up Benue and the depth of Alia’s infrastructure transformation

    By Bridget Tikyaa

On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, the Benue State Government signed a life changing Memorandum of Understanding with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) as part of the government’s strategy to accelerate private investment in the state’s Renewable Energy Ecosystem.

This initiative is being followed by the establishment of a high-powered task force to develop the state energy master plan that will clearly define the state’s priority projects and develop bankable investment plans.

To drive this life-changing initiative, the Benue State Government is setting up the state energy commission to coordinate investments in the energy sector.

The Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr Hyacinth Iormem Alia, who gave detailed explanations on the state’s energy strategy during the Abuja roundtable with REA officials which culminated into the signing of the MoU, added that the energy commission would operate as a special independent vehicle responsible for coordinating projects, mobilising capital, streamlining approvals, and ensuring the efficient deployment of investors funds.

”It will serve as the one stock platform for energy investment in the state. The impact of these strategies will be transformative. Industrial zones and commercial enterprises will gain reliable electricity, reduce operational costs, and attract further investments,” he said.

READ ALSO: Retreat on improving polytechnic education

It is an initiative that will guarantee uninterrupted electricity for businesses, schools, hospitals, government offices, and homes, as well as renewable energy for the transport sector. The state is well set to access electricity that drives inclusive productivity and improved quality of life.

According to the governor, the high-powered task force to develop the state energy master plan is also expected to create a robust regulatory framework to guarantee transparency, predictability, and investor confidence.

It’s activities will serve as a blueprint for renewable energy deployment and industrial energy solution in the state that will lead to expansion of electric vehicles, electric bikes, and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) power for transportation, thereby reducing emissions, foster green mobility ecosystem and create new economic opportunities.

In developing the state’s energy strategy, Benue has carefully studied Nigeria’s ongoing power sector reforms, particularly the decentralisation of electricity generation and distribution enabled by the Electricity Act, 2023.

Rather than replicate existing national structures, the government deliberately adapted the parts that suit Benue’s unique economic profile, industrial ambitions, and energy demand patterns.

While the national grid remains important, the strategy acknowledges its limitations in meeting sub-national and industrial energy needs. Benue, therefore, is designing a complementary decentralised energy model. One that reduces dependence on the national grid and supports embedded and captive power solutions.

This decentralised energy will enable private investors to efficiently serve industrial clusters , agro-processing zones, and off-grid communities. Just as the state will gain access to electricity that creates green jobs, deepen energy access, enhance climate resilience, and position the state as a benchmark for energy-led industrial development in Nigeria.

Under the MoU, according to Mr Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of REA, Benue State Government would woo private investors to achieve 100 percent electrification in the state, while the REA will provide funds for the projects.

He explained that said that under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, the REA has received up to 750 million dollars for projects, which states could access.

Specifically, 750 million dollars is meant to develop 1,350 mini-grids the capacity to provide electricity for 17.5 million Nigerians. It is also to develop 250 interconnected mini-grids and deploy over 10 million solar home systems.

These are the deliverables, which governor Alia has set the stage to provide. An energy efficient solution that will power homes, schools, hospitals, utilities, and create millions of new jobs across the state.

It is another unambiguous testament of the governor’s transformational leadership, a leadership that taps opportunities, opens roads of progress, and offers hope and direction to the vulnerable in the society.

It is just like the 55.09 km of road networks in Gboko and its environs. The project, expected to be completed in five months, includes reconstruction and dualization of roads in the area, which will cost up to N62.135 billion.

In fact, the Gboko road network will be the second-longest road network in the state, apart from other ongoing roads construction, including the 57-kilometre road network in the Benue South Senatorial District, and the the Awajir–Oju road.

The Gboko reconstruction and dualization prohect covers Yandev Roundabout–Lubona Junction; reconstruction and dualization of Captain Dawns Road; reconstruction of NKST Anzua Link Road; reconstruction of Bristow Roundabout–Tor Tiv Palace (Akaahar Adi) Road; reconstruction of J.S. Tarka–Mkar Roundabout (a dual carriageway); reconstruction and dualization of Tor Tiv Roundabout–Lessel Road; and reconstruction of a dual carriagethe Tor Tiv Roundabout (Gondo Aluor) to Mkar, and Ameladu Road.
