Rotary 9110, Nigeria comprising Lagos and Ogun States has awarded scholarships to 25 students of tertiary institutions.
The scholarships were awarded under the District Education and Welfare Endowment Fund ( DEWEF ) through which 85 scholarships including the latest 25 awardees have been given.
DEWEF was instituted to provide education and welfare support for brilliant but indigent students who must be 200 level students or 300 level for medical and engineering students in any of the state or federal universities, colleges of education or polytechnic in Lagos and Ogun.
Chairman, Board of Trustees of the fund, Adeniji Raji said apart from awarding 85 scholarships since 2010 when the fund was formally registered, it donated 500,000 to flood victims in Benue and contributed N1.5m to the Vocational Centre in Igbogbo. The District Governor, Kola Sodipo said the scholarship was to bring succour to the needy in terms of educational support.
Sodipo said: “We found that there are many students that are brilliant, but for one reason or the other they are incapacitated by not having enough fund to see themselves through their academic pursuit. Some may, unfortunately, drop out of school, some may have cause to resort to other self-help which is not good enough so as Rotarians saddled with the serving humanity, we have put together in our own district, a DEWEF to take care of such needs.”
Chairman of DEWEF Scholarship Committee, Alaba Olalekan said the district would explore expanding the scholarships to accommodate more beneficiaries.
“My message to the beneficiary is to make judicious use of what is given to them. It is purposely to support their education and they should use it for that. More so, the scholarship is continuous and as such we intend to see them doing well and we also believe that they will improve on their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) because it is either maintaining the CGPA or increasing the CGPA that will make them continue to the be the beneficiary until their graduation,” he said.
