A NON-Governmental Organisation (NGO) has instituted a N50million scholarship scheme to help indigent students in Anambra State.

The Awka Ambassadors Club, which was formed many years ago, at the weekend, distributed education materials worth N23million to four Schools.  The group told The Nation that their aim was to help the needy, the poor and less-privileged individuals in the society.

The primary Schools that benefitted from the Awka Ambassadors Club largesse at the weekend, included, Ezi Awka Primary School, Community Primary School Umuokpu; Agulu Awka Primary School and Community Primary School Amenyi Awka.

President of the club, Benji Nwosu, said the club paid hospital bills of 13 persons recently and would pay for many others soon.

He led other members of the club, including former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Kelue Molokwu, and the Chairman of the Education Committee of the club, Obi Onyekuba and Governor Willie Obiano’s Special Assistant on Community Affairs, Obi Ochije, among others

Nwosu further said the aim of the club was not to display wealth, but to act as real Ambassadors, who had the interest of the indigent students and the needy at heart

He said their main focus was on education, health and being their brothers’ keepers, adding that soon the club would embark on visits to hospitals in the state.

The head teachers of the different schools- Mrs. Rose Nwokolo, Mrs. Agatha Nedum and Silver Ibegbunam- were all full of gratitude to the Awka Ambassadors Club.

They told The Nation that they had been praying for the club to visit their schools, having heard what the club had been doing in other places before now.

Some of the educational materials shared to the students numbering over 1,200 included four exercise books each, four pens, four pencils, cartons of noodles to the teachers among others.
