Attention, Fashola

SIR: I urge you to take urgent steps to effect repairs on the Calabar (Odukpani) – Itu -Ikot Ekpene Road in Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

To enable you to assess, first-hand, the gravity of the situation, you will need to take a ride on it. Presently the road should enter the Guinness Book of World Records as the worst trafficked road on this planet.

For those of us who are unrepentant believers in the Nigerian Project, our faith is shaken to its foundation when we see the hardship motorists have to endure to traverse these 95 kilometres of hell.

Traveling on the road last week, I was forced to ask myself questions like “What exactly is wrong with us as a people? Is it a crime to be a Nigerian?”

Further continuing the journey from Ikot Ekpene to Aba in Abia State is like embarking on a suicide mission. The entire Calabar – Itu – Ikot Ekpene – Aba Road is statutorily a federal highway.

Truth be told, there is not one good road that links Akwa Ibom and Cross River states with the rest of Nigeria. All the roads were constructed over 40 years ago and have become decrepit due aging and lack of maintenance.

Whatever happened to the billions of dollars made from oil? So sad.
