Bose Omolayo gave Team Nigeria its second powerlifting gold medal in the on-going 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo yesterday at the Tokyo International Forum.
Omolayo, competing in the women’s -79kg, displayed high level resilience and dexterity yesterday to clinch the country’s second gold medal at the Games as she lifted a world record 141kg.
Her win means all four of Team Nigeria’s medals (two gold and two bronze) have all come from powerlifting.
She now joins Latifat Tijani as the only Nigerian athlete who has won gold at the Tokyo Games while Olaitan Ibrahim and Lucy Ejike picked up the two bronze medals to put Nigeria as the highest placed African nation at the Games in 27th position after Day Seven,.
Meanwhile, the President, Nigeria Para-Powerlifting Federation, Ruel Ishaku is optimistic that the country’s powerlifters would win more medals, even as he thanked the Minister of Sports and Youth Development Sunday Dare for his unwavering support for the special needs athletes.

“We came to Tokyo 2020 Paralympics with only ten athletes and already we have two golds and two bronze medals,” Ishaku said. “We still have hope of more medal tomorrow (today).”
“My belief is that our powerlifters will win more medals at the Games. We have the potential, but they need more encouragement from the government, corporate bodies and well-meaning individuals to support them to attain greater heights in the sport.
“I want to use this medium to thank the Honourable Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, for boosting the morale of the athletes by providing a huge sum of money as winning bonuses,” he added.
