Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola yesterday received students of Osun origin into the state, following insecurity in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
Plateau, the Northcentral state, for days has been battling unrest.
Receiving the students at the Government House, Oke-Fia, Osogbo, Governor Oyetola, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prince Wole Oyebamiji, hailed the security operatives, especially the police, for ensuring the security of the students.
“When we heard the news on Monday (August 23), the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Yemi Lawal, Special Adviser to the Governor on Education Jamiu Olawumi and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Students Affairs and Social Mobilisation Comrade Kehinde Ayantuji, informed the governor that they had contacted you, and all of you assured them that you were safe. Based on that, we relaxed.
“We contacted your vice chancellor, who assured us of your security. But all of a sudden, last Friday, we received a report that there is still danger and this is why we have to take a proactive action to evacuate you from the state.”
Ayantuji said the pressure to evacuate students of Osun origin heated up about 48 hours when the students could not bear the crisis in Jos.

“Governor Oyetola ordered flight for the students, but due to the curfew, our students could not access the airport and we sought another means. We were able to evacuate the students with the help of the police commissioner. They arrived the state about 2pm on Sunday (yesterday).”
The Osun State Students Coordinator in Jos, Oluwasanmi Sinmiloluwa, narrating the ordeal, said Jos was tense and the lives of the students were threatened as the crisis thickened.
“The police were going around with Armoured Personnel Carrier to pick students from their hostels. We were under the rain and sun for hours. We thank God that we are finally in our state. We thank Governor Oyetola for prompt response to secure our lives.”
