The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has proposed a $3.5 million partnership funding with the Katsina State Government, for the promotion of basic education for women and children in the state.
UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Mr Peter Hawkins, who made the above proposal during a visit to Katsina State Governor at the Government House, Katsina, said the proposal, when implemented, will turn out a high population of educated women that will contribute in the transformation of the economy of Katsina State such as what happened in Norway.
Hawkins expressed appreciation to the schools’ based management committees, teachers and pupils for sustaining the UNICEF mentorship held across the state.
He further explained that the UNICEF would reinforce its commitments to education and its security in the state.
He also commended the immediate response of Governor Masari during the abduction of 344 students of Government Science Secondary School Kankara, adding that such a response had shown the commitment of the governor to the revival and sustenance of the education system in the state.
Also, the Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board has reiterated its determination towards continued partnership with development partners in other to consolidate the basic education sector in the state.
Executive Chairman of UBEC, Alhaji Lawal Buhari Daura, said this when he received a delegation from the European Union (EU), United Nations Development Project (UNDP) and UNICEF country representatives during an official visit, praised the efforts of the development partners on the education sector.
Also, Governor Masari has ruled out fresh negotiations with terrorists currently terrorising the state, insisting that his administration took the decision having realised the failure of the bandits to honour earlier deals made with the state government.
Masari said this while responding to a question by a UNICEF representative in Nigeria, Mr Peter Hawkins.
Mr Hawkins had sought to know if the state government would engage the bandits in fresh negotiation as part of measures aimed at reducing military pressure on them and boosting massive enrolment in education in the state.
The governor further called on the UN to use its connections to break the chain of inflow of arms and ammunition into the country.
even as he stressed the need to support the Northern part of Nigeria with modern technology to track the movement of criminals in the forests.
