29 regain sight at free health programme in Adamawa

Twenty-nine people, who lost their sights because of eye ailment complications, have regained their sights, courtesy of a health programme they benefitted from.

The 29 were among over 100 eye patients attended to by a team of doctors and other health personnel assembled for a free medical outreach in the Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The Senator Binos Yaroe Free Medical Outreach achieved the feat at its 9th outreach to Lamurde where it received a total of 5,300 patients who were duly treated for different kinds of ailments they were diagnosed with.

The Head, Medical Consultant and Coordinator of the programme, Dr Talemoh Dah, who spoke to our correspondent yesterday on the outcome of the Lamurde outreach, said the matter of the blind receiving their sight after an operation had been performed on them had become routine occurrence to the outreach.

He said: “If you have been following us, Lamurde was the ninth council that we have covered since the beginning of this programme about three years ago. We see it all the time: people being led in because they are unable to see, and then walking out bright-eyed days later after they have been worked on, has become common to us.”

He explained that about the 100 people who reported eye problems of varying complexities to the Lamurde outreach, the 29 were those who had totally lost their sight, and they were successfully operated on by the time the five-day programme ended on Friday.

Ninety-four health personnel, including specialist doctors and nurses, availed their services to make the outreach successful, according to Dr Dah, who said he personally brought in 60 such personnel from around some states in the North, while the Primary Health Care Centre in Lamurde where the programme took place made 19 personnel available, with the Executive Secretary of the Primary Health Care Department of the Lamurde council, Howard Mamunna providing 15.

The Senator Binos Yaroe Free Medical Outreach, which is sponsored by Binos Yaroe, Senator representing Adamawa South Senatorial zone, had previously covered eight councils, namely Demsa, Toungo, Numan, Guyuk, Ganye, Shelleng, Mayo- Belwa, Jada, and last of all Lamurde between August 2019 and last week, during when a total of about 70,000 patients have been treated.

At the flag-off of the Lamurde Outreach, Senator Binos Yaroe had told reporters that taking free medical attention to the poor among his constituents has given him an immense sense of fulfilment.

The nine councils that the outreach has covered are the ones that constitute his Adamawa South Senatorial Zone.
