Tinubu: New Nigeria now a step away

Tinubu

SIR: What played out at the Eagle Square in Abuja, where the APC National Convention took place, is reminiscent of the saying: “One good turn deserves another.” As the national leader and presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, made his way into the venue of the convention, he was greeted with loud cheers. This was symbolic of honour earned by a man who is a force to be reckoned with on the political terrain over the years.

That said, his achievements in and outside politics haven’t gone without being castigated by detractors who began to peddle falsehoods about his health shortly after he declared his intention to run for the presidency. So far, this has been put to rest, as he has surprised them by showing his agility and vibrancy during consultations since then. One thing I can say about this is: someone of his stature cannot run away from criticisms.

In no small measure, the tremendous support he enjoys from all and sundry today is described as a dividend of his exemplary leadership, dedication and sacrifice to Nigeria and humanity. Besides, the Nigerian history is incomplete without a mention of his exploits and others’ who were said to have fronted the fight for democracy during the military regime as well as his eventual banishment, which lasted for some years. This was one of the many sacrifices he made for the country.

Without a doubt, Jagaban, as he is fondly called, is long overdue to serve the country of his birth. The “Moses of our time” appellation, once given to him by Cardinal James Odumbaku, couldn’t be more right.

His political clout inspired by orderliness, frugality and strategies are few of the qualities which have continually earned him credibility. His affinity to Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnicity, endears him to many. These don’t go without life-changing opportunities Asiwaju has given to people- a testament to his magnanimity. He is a promoter of unity among Nigerians, as evidenced by the template of governance he created in Lagos, where anybody, regardless of your tribe or ethnicity, can hold positions, establishing mantra “Lagos is no man’s land’’ mantra as a result.

Over the years, he has groomed leaders at various levels and proven that his performance as governor of Lagos State is not a one-off. He is capable of rebuilding Nigeria and turning the tide of insecurity and paralysed economy. His recent emergence as the presidential flagbearer of the APC is adjudged by many as a masterstroke, with his co-aspirants having to willingly back out of the race and fully support him.

How else could a visionary leader like Asiwaju be honoured?

Honestly, there can be no better time to give back to this resilient leader who has sacrificed his resources, strength and time on rejuvenating and sustaining his beloved party (APC) than now.

Overtly and covertly, he has professed his greater plans for Nigeria and assured Nigerians of good governance should he emerge as president come 2023. And with the first of the many hurdles before him cleared, his lifelong ambition to rule this country is fast becoming a reality.

As one of his admirers, I join other well-meaning Nigerians to celebrate Tinubu’s victory and wait patiently to see him change the rhythm soon.
