SIR: With the upgrading by INEC, of some voting points to polling units, we, in Katsina State, have today over 6,000 polling units in totality. The new polling units are 1,750 in number. These additional polling units will no doubt lead to decongestion and an increase in voter turnout.
But from all indications, many of the new polling units will be deleted after 2023 general elections as many of them do not have registered voters. The reality is that those that fail to get up to fifty registered voters will be cancelled. To prevent this occurrence, the coalition of civil society organizations in Katsina State has already got the list of the PUs to start mass mobilization of encouraging yet-to-be registered voters to register under these new PUs. But this uphill task should not be left in the hands of CSOs. I think that the state government, local government, traditional rulers and political parties should key in to save the new polling units otherwise over 1,000 of them face imminent deletion. We must not advance the usual excuse. The time to act is now.
