The suspected killer of a naval officer and some police personnel in Imo State has been shot dead.
The suspect, one Osita Ogbuiri, aka Shina Rambo, was killed on July 27 around 9am in a gun duel with the police at their hideout between Abia and Cross River states.
In a statement yesterday, police spokesman Michael Abattam said the suspect was among the inmates that escaped from Imo Correctional Centre Owerri, on April 5, 2021, where he was serving life imprisonment for the murder of two persons.
Abattam also alleged that Ogbuiri killed the Town Union President of Mmahu Egbema in Ohaji Egbema council Charles Mgbarahu.
He said: “The hoodlums on sighting the police operatives engaged them in a gun duel, but were overwhelmed by the superior fire-power and professional dexterity displayed by the gallant police operatives.”
A police inspector also shot dead two gunmen, who invaded his house at Aforukwu, Orogwe in Owerri West council of the state yesterday.
The bandits, who came around 2am scaled the perimeter wall fence into the compound in an attempt to enter the inspector’s flat.
A source said while the bandits were attempting to destroy the iron anti-burglary protector and front door, the inspector who placed himself at a vantage position, engaged the bandits in a shootout.
Abattam confirmed the incident, saying the stunned hoodlums took to their heels.
One of the fleeing suspects was gunned down while another fled into the bushes with gunshot wounds and was later found dead, Abattam said.
The police spokesman said the inspector, who lives just a pole away from where the Orogwe attack took place, alerted the Divisional Police Officer of Ogbaku Division, who mobilised and rushed to the scene.
“On arrival, they combed the surrounding bushes where a body, two locally-made pistols and an identity card were recovered.
He said, “the recovered identity card belonged to one of the neutralised bandits, Chukwuemezie Chukwu.
