Unlawful demolition at Gwagwalada, FCT

Abbas Badmus

SIR: Please come to our aid and look at the information below; and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions for further investigation

“The barbaric act took place on the 1st day of September 2022. While many of us left for official duties, some men from the FCTA came to our layout, Kuntuku V Extension layout, accompanied by security officers, dozer, arms and ammunition, to demolish all the houses that people invested their resources to build.

It should be noted that this demolition came suddenly without any prior notification. The occupants were not allowed to take out their belongings as heavy security men restricted them with their arms and ammunition.

Did we build on fake landed properties?  Sometime around 2015, 2016 and 2017, some land documents were sold in the secondary market; the land was allocated by Gwagwalada Area council land office in 2001, many people who acquired these documents took the documents to Gwagwalada Area council zonal land office for confirmation. The Zonal Land Manager confirmed the documents and issued the letter of confirmation before potential buyers invested their money.

Besides, a consultant surveying company employed by the land office issued surveying coordinate data of each plot to the potential buyers. The company was paid and also issued receipts on behalf of Gwagwalada Area council land office to ensure that there were no issues of encroachments.

The questions disturbing us are: Who ordered the demolition and what are the reasons? Did FCTA appoint a zonal land manager of Gwagwalada land office around 2016/2017? Why was he confirming the land documents that are not genuine in an official setting and issuing confirmation letters? Who gave the surveying consultant company the right to be issuing surveying coordinate data of this land? Why were our houses demolished without mark or notice?

These questions are still unanswered. We call on the relevant agency to do a thorough investigation and bring perpetrators to book. We didn’t allocate any land to ourselves, the Gwagwalada Area council land office did.”
