Crisis looms in Ondo community over new yam festival

Ondo

The crisis is looming in Arigidi, Akoko northwest local government area of Ondo state over plans by one Gani Ashiru to celebrate the new yam festival on July 13.

Arigidi is the hometown of the late Prophet Temitope Joshua and the Aare Ona Kankafo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams.

The Arigidi Council of Chiefs described the announcement by Ashiru as a sacrilege and alien to the culture and tradition in Arigidi Akoko.

High Chief Alabi Rotimi Francis, the Edibo of Arigidi, who spoke to journalists, said it was only their king, the Zaki of Arigidi, who is authorised to announce the celebration of a new yam festival on the 20th of July every year.

Chief Alabi said the announcement by Ashiru was a ploy to cause confusion and crisis in the community.

He called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to call Ashiru to avoid any crisis in Arigidi.

He said: “Let it be known that the people of Arigidi Akoko are peace-loving. Ashiru is neither a chief nor a leader in Arigidi and lacks any authority to announce the celebration of a new yam festival.

“Also, we call on the commissioner of police in Ondo state and the Director of the State Security Service to intervene now to avert any breakdown of law and order in our town.

“It has become obvious that he has a devious plan to cause a crisis in Arigidi. We implore all the security agencies in the state to intervene now before any harm is done.”
