Gospel singer Tope Alabi has addressed critics who questioned her style, emphasising that her decisions are personal and not dictated by God.
Alabi revealed that she loves beauty and fashion but initially couldn’t afford her desired style, resulting in a more minimalist look early in her career.
She also clarified that her decision to cover hair in church was a personal choice, not a directive from God.
She further addressed concerns about her limited use of jewelry, explaining that her appearance is often tailored to the themes of her music videos.
As a theater practitioner, Alabi emphasised her understanding of how visual elements contribute to the overall message of her music.
She recalled how she used to wear smaller earrings due to financial constraints, but now selects her accessories and attire based on the context and theme of each video shoot.

She said in a livestream: “I love beauty and fashion but I don’t have the money for it. God has never once told me never to wear earrings, necklaces or wigs, never.
“The hair that I cover in church was never under God’s direction, I did that under my own initiative, it was intentional. I told myself that anywhere I want to minister, I would cover my hair unless I’m called to sing impromptu when I’m wearing my wig.
“If you see me in any video where I’m not wearing earrings, just know it is because I decided not to because the meaning of the song does not warrant earrings. I’m a theater practitioner to the core so I know what look fits each song.
“When I want to shoot my videos I know how to dress for each video. Back then people used to see me eating small earrings, they just didn’t know that I only wore smaller earrings because I couldn’t afford big ones. I also considered the theme of the video shoot and the location. Do suffering people wear earrings?”
