Tope Alabi: God orchestrated my marriage with Soji

Popular gospel singer, Tope Alabi, has opened up on the divine circumstances that led to her marriage to music producer, Soji Alabi.

In an emotional recount, the award-winning singer revealed that their love story was never planned but rather orchestrated by God through a series of unexpected events that began during her early years as a movie soundtrack artist.

The union has gone ahead to stand the test of time and remained strong for nearly 25 years.

“I was already recording soundtracks for movies at that time,” she recalled. “I remember being paid N200,000 by Highwaves Video Mart to record an album. When I got to Soji Alabi’s studio, I was told he no longer worked there and no one knew his whereabouts.”

Determined to deliver on the project, Tope said she proceeded to another studio owned by Soji’s former boss, confident that they could replicate his sound quality. But after completing the album and submitting it to the client, she was met with rejection.

“Highwaves rejected the music, saying it was of low quality and didn’t meet the standard they knew me for,” she said. “I was so disappointed. I decided to return to Soji’s old studio to ask for his home address, hoping to find him and beg for his help. To my surprise, I met Soji there. I told him I had been looking for him and explained everything that happened.”

According to the gospel star, Soji immediately offered to help, but with a much smaller budget. “He asked if I could raise N20,000 instead of the N200,000 I was originally paid. I told him I had nothing on me, and we eventually worked out the project with just N10,000,” she recounted.

At that time, Tope said her relationship with Soji was strictly professional. She was in an abusive relationship and had no romantic connection with him.

“I was already living with my ex-partner, who physically abused me at will, but Soji was just a working acquaintance,” she said. “It was after I left that abusive marriage that Soji and I became close as friends. He would take me out for movies, restaurants, and also look after my daughter. From there, we grew so close and eventually got married a year and a half later.”

  • I don’t listen to Yinka Alaseyori’s songs because of Tope Alabi – Lizzy Anjorin

I don’t listen to Yinka Alaseyori’s songs because of Tope Alabi – Lizzy Anjorin

Actress Lizzy Anjorin has opened up about her unwavering admiration for gospel singer Tope Alabi, revealing it as the reason she distanced herself from fellow artist Yinka Alaseyori.

In a recent video, Lizzy disclosed that she declined an invitation to an award event in Canada simply because Yinka, and not Tope, was scheduled to perform.

She also shared that she played Tope Alabi’s songs in solidarity during the singer’s recent online controversy, even though her team advised against it.

However, Lizzy expressed disappointment over Tope Alabi’s silence following a surprise birthday celebration she had hoped would be acknowledged by the gospel star, especially since she felt the gesture was made in Tope’s honour.

She said: “This is the evidence that the person who planned the birthday surprise for me mentioned my name in the email that was sent to Sis Tope Alabi’s team on Jan 26. My fans deliberately called Tope because they know how much I love her. It’s because of Sis Tope that I never played Yinka Alaseyori’s songs on my page. I don’t h@te Yinka but I was just being loyal to Sis Tope.

“I was invited to an award ceremony in Canada, and Yinka was to sing there; I didn’t go because it was not Sis Tope who would sing. When Sis Tope was being dragged recently for not allowing the father of her daughter to be at her wedding, I played my song to support her even though my team told me not to.”

  • Real reasons Tope Alabi refused to perform at Liz Anjorin’s surprise birthday party

Real reasons Tope Alabi refused to perform at Liz Anjorin’s surprise birthday party

Details have emerged as to why popular gospel singer, Tope Alabi, allegedly refused to perform at the birthday of Nigerian actress, Liz Anjorin.

A filmmaker and author, Oreofe Williams PhD who was privy to the matter disclosed that Ministers Soji and Tope Alabi and their team were not given the endeared privilege of a choice by conscience with respect to the contract.

The Nation learnt that that the singer declined to come down from her car upon discovering that the celebrant was Anjorin.

It was also learned that fans of Anjorin secured the services of Alabi in the diaspora.

Although the gospel singer was engaged for the birthday party, she was unaware of the identity of the celebrant until she arrived at the venue.

However, the singer was said to have refused to leave her car, stating that she could not perform for Anjorin due to personal reasons.

Alabi was said to have gone back home and later refunded the money.

Reacting to the development in a video on Saturday, Anjorin berated Alabi for refusing to perform at her surprise birthday party, saying that she cannot be bullied.

The actress also released payment receipt of the money her fans paid to the gospel singer.

Reacting, Dr. Williams in a statement titled: “Concerning Evang. Tope Alabi and Lizzy Anjorin’s Birthday Surprise: An Unfortunate Conundrum “explained that the sum of N2.5m and not N3.5m was paid to the Alabis.

He further noted that the cost value for the surprise performance was reduced by 70% because Soji Alabi considered his intervention.

Dr. Williams said: “Some weeks ago, a filmmaker contacted me because he needed Evang. Tope Alabi. The filmmaker told me that he wanted to surprise ‘someone he cherishes a lot’. No name was mentioned and I assumed it could be his wife or anybody.

“This conjecture is not far-fetched as he did create an impression that he was personally funding the surprise. No impression was given that it was a joint contribution by any team. Of course, I would not have doubted him because I’m not unaware that this filmmaker is rich enough to fund the surprise.

“I contacted Uncle Soji Alabi and after that, released his number to the filmmaker. It was supposed to be the birthday surprise of a public figure and I still marvel till tomorrow about why her name was conspicuously hidden by the filmmaker who contacted me.

“Uncle Soji informed me that day would be very busy and I pleaded with him to attend having considered any possibility for a rescheduling. He also mentioned the amount was low for a birthday surprise but I prevailed on Uncle Soji and he eventually honoured my plea to receive the agreed amount (after giving a 70% price reduction due to my intervention). However, the requirement of N2.5m was met for the birthday ‘SURPRISE’. Nonetheless, the identity remained hidden until they got to the venue.

“The main question is: Why was the celebrant’s identity hidden? And for what reason?

“It was at this moment I received a call from Uncle Soji who had already made up his mind to leave the venue. Sincerely speaking, I would never have spent the next 15 seconds there if I was in his position. Nobody loves to be manipulated. I can tell you authoritatively that he is the President of Gospel Vibes and he takes decisions.

“He told me on phone he was leaving. I also wondered why someone would keep a public figure anonymous even for me whose name he used to have such an access to the Alabis and reduce the amount to be paid.

“The reason they returned the money and left was not particularly because of the celebrant or anyone around the venue as I have read in some articles. They felt deceived and were not given the endeared privilege of a choice by conscience.

“Ministers Soji and Tope Alabi and their team have, on several occasions, honoured christians and moslems, as their fans cut across multiple languages and religions.

“Please note the sum received was N2.5m which was paid to the Alabis in three tranches and NOT N3.5m. The inflated price published by some writers is erroneous.

“The Alabis made an instant refund of N2.5m. I had to request for the payment receipts from the Alabis because I feel quite bitter about such manipulations and the grievous mob misinterpretations given to it.

“It is expedient to note that Integrity, transparency and accountability will always serve as the bedrocks to sustain healthy business relationships.

“You don’t ask a singer to ‘surprise’ a public-figure only to keep the celebrant anonymous and eventually ‘surprise’ the ‘surpriser’ at the venue. You will be more surprised!”

  • I stood by you when the world rejected you, Lizzy Anjorin slams Tope Alabi

I stood by you when the world rejected you, Lizzy Anjorin slams Tope Alabi

Actress Lizzy Anjorin has reacted to viral report of gospel singer Tope Alabi’s refusal to perform at her surprise birthday party.

She claimed that her fans paid Alabi N4 million to perform at her birthday celebration but she backed out after realising she was the celebrant.

Liz Anjorin shared a receipt of the alleged N4 million payment, accusing Tope Alabi of unprofessional behaviour.

She expressed disappointment, citing her past loyalty to the singer during controversies, including her fallout with late Prophet Ajanaku.

The actress argued that Tope Alabi should have remained professional, regardless of personal feelings.

She emphasised that she supported the singer in the past and even played her songs to show solidarity.

“Aunty Tope, my fans paid you ₦4 million and I have the evidence with me. Even if you were paid ₦500k, were you not an actress before? In acting, we were taught that if you are to kiss your enemy on a movie set, you must do it.

“When the world rejected you, I stood by you. I even play your songs not because I need them, but to support you. No matter how terrible you think I am, I’m not as bad as Prophet Ajanaku.

“You saw the goodness of God in my life when you were outside my place. You called me your sister. No matter how much they paid you, you should not have reacted that way. If you judge me, you are not God,” she said in part.

According to reports, Tope Alabi allegedly refused to alight from her car and asked the driver to turn around upon discovering Lizzy Anjorin was the birthday celebrant.

  • My fashion style choices personal, not divine – Tope Alabi

My fashion style choices personal, not divine – Tope Alabi

Gospel singer Tope Alabi has addressed critics who questioned her style, emphasising that her decisions are personal and not dictated by God.

Alabi revealed that she loves beauty and fashion but initially couldn’t afford her desired style, resulting in a more minimalist look early in her career.

She also clarified that her decision to cover hair in church was a personal choice, not a directive from God.

She further addressed concerns about her limited use of jewelry, explaining that her appearance is often tailored to the themes of her music videos.

As a theater practitioner, Alabi emphasised her understanding of how visual elements contribute to the overall message of her music.

She recalled how she used to wear smaller earrings due to financial constraints, but now selects her accessories and attire based on the context and theme of each video shoot.

She said in a livestream: “I love beauty and fashion but I don’t have the money for it. God has never once told me never to wear earrings, necklaces or wigs, never.

“The hair that I cover in church was never under God’s direction, I did that under my own initiative, it was intentional. I told myself that anywhere I want to minister, I would cover my hair unless I’m called to sing impromptu when I’m wearing my wig.

“If you see me in any video where I’m not wearing earrings, just know it is because I decided not to because the meaning of the song does not warrant earrings. I’m a theater practitioner to the core so I know what look fits each song.

“When I want to shoot my videos I know how to dress for each video. Back then people used to see me eating small earrings, they just didn’t know that I only wore smaller earrings because I couldn’t afford big ones. I also considered the theme of the video shoot and the location. Do suffering people wear earrings?”

  • I regret disappointing Tope Alabi, says Olaiya Igwe

I regret disappointing Tope Alabi, says Olaiya Igwe

Veteran actor Olaiya Igwe has opened up about his greatest regret in a recent interview with Baba Ibe TV.

He revealed that disappointing gospel singer, Tope Alabi, on her wedding day still weighs heavily on his conscience.

The incident occurred years ago when Igwe had just purchased a luxury car after the success of his film “Ololade Mr Money.”

Tope Alabi and her husband, Soji, had asked to borrow the car for their wedding, and Igwe initially agreed.

However, he later reneged on his promise, citing concerns about the car’s safety after a recent robbery incident.

Igwe acknowledged that his actions caused hurt and disappointment to Tope Alabi, and despite seeking forgiveness, he still feels guilty about the incident.

Olaiya reflected on how Tope Alabi has since acquired multiple luxury cars, while he cannot afford such possessions.

He said: “What hurt me most and still hurting me is what I did to my younger sister, singer Tope Alabi. She informed me about her wedding, and I just bought a car ‘V boot’ at that time. It was when I did ‘Ololade Mr Money’ movie and before I collected the plate number, I had already inscribed Ololade Mr Money 1 on the car.

“So, I went to Ibadan in Oyo State to show one of my films, and my car was stolen from me by robbers but it was later recovered the following day after the news has circulated on radio stations and other platforms. When I returned from Ibadan, Tope Alabi came to my house in Abeokuta and said big brother please we want to use your car for our wedding and I said no problem.

“But after she left, I had a second thought that what if armed robbers snatched the car from them. I stopped picking her calls a day before the wedding. I didn’t give her the car. I disappointed Tope Alabi. But she now has countless luxury cars, some of which I cannot afford. So, up till today I’m still in pain that I offended Tope Alabi. I once sought her forgiveness during one of our professional meetings in Ogun State. My greatest regret is disappointing Tope Alabi”.
