Adewole hails Akande at 87, describes ex-Osun governor as pillar of Nigeria’s democratic history

Former Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, has paid tribute to 87-year-old Chief Adebisi Akande, describing him as one of the enduring pillars of Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

In a statement, Adewole said the former Osun State governor remains “an elder whose life story is woven into the fabric of our nation’s political history, particularly in the South-West.”

He noted that despite humble beginnings, Akande rose through public service with discipline, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the common good.

Adewole recalled Akande’s tenure as governor of Osun State, highlighting his prudent management of resources, modest lifestyle, and exemplary accountability.

He said Akande demonstrated that leadership is defined by sacrifice, service, and legacy rather than personal comfort.

As Secretary of the Akande Foundation, Adewole described the elder statesman as a “bridge between generations,” noting his central role in shaping progressive politics in Nigeria—from the Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria to the Alliance for Democracy and later the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“His style of leadership—frank, principled, and consistent—has earned him both respect and admiration across political, ethnic, and religious lines. He is known for speaking the truth as he sees it, without malice, fear, or favour. In an age of political convenience, Chief Akande has remained a symbol of conviction.”

The ambassador-designate stated that at 87, Chief Akande is “a champion of progressive ideals and federalism, a custodian of the values of honesty, modesty, and hard work, a statesman whose name is synonymous with loyalty, courage, and service.

‘As we honour Chief Adebisi Akande at this remarkable milestone, we pray that God Almighty will continue to grant him good health, peace of mind, and strength. May his remaining years be filled with joy, and may the ideals he has stood for continue to inspire leaders today and generations yet unborn.

“Baba, at 87, you remain a guiding light. Nigeria salutes you. Osun celebrates you. History records you.”
