Man kills octogenarian father, self in Ekiti

A 32-year-old man, Lekan Adediran, allegedly suffering from mental disorder,  has reportedly killed his octogenarian father, Pa Lawrence Adediran.

The incident occurred at Efon-Alaye in Efon Local Government of Ekiti State.

The Nation learnt  the suspect, after allegedly killing his 80-year old father with a broken bottle, killed himself.

His elder brother, Ojo Adediran, who reported the incident at Efon Divisional Police Station, alleged Lekan was mentally infirm and that he committed the offence, about 9:45 pm, on Monday.

Briefing reporters in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, police spokesman Caleb Ikechukwu said the bodies had been deposited at the mortuary of General Hospital, Efon-Alaye.

He said the deceased’s brother told the police his brother allegedly had mental challenge, adding that the family battled it.

Ikechukwu said: “Lekan’s brother came to the police station at Efon Alaye to report how he killed their 80-year-old father with a broken bottle and also killed himself.

“Their bodies are in the mortuary of General Hospital, Efon-Alaye, for autopsy.

“We are not relying on the report of the deceased’s elder brother alone; we will investigate the incident to ascertain the veracity of the claim and the reasons for the murder and suicide.”

He said suspected cultists on July 29 invaded a satellite village and a drinking joint in Ado-Ekiti and shot Ayomide Adebayo, 23 and Sola Akinwande.

The spokesman said Adebayo was shot at Oshodi Street, the same day Akinwande was also shot at a drinking joint.

He said the victims were shot in the legs and are at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti.

“We got the information, about 10:45 pm, and upon investigation, it coincided with the day cultists wanted to secretly bury a man on Ilawe Road.

“We contacted our men in the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), who ambushed and arrested the suspects at their hideout. They are being detained at the command headquarters, helping us in our investigation.”
