Abia builds road leading to Kanu’s father’s house

From Sunny Nwankwo, Umuahia

Abia State is building the road leading to the palace of Eze Israel Okwu Kanu; the late father of leader of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, it was learnt.

Eze Kanu and his wife, Ugoeze Sally Meme, died last year at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, and German hospitals.

The Eze I.O. Kanu road remained untarred except for minor grading.

But a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Onyebuchi Ememanka, said the government had directed the Ministry of Works to rebuild the road.

Ememanka said this followed an appeal by President-General of Isiama Afaraukwu Development Union Chief Ikechukwu Ndubueze.

He added that the ministry would ensure the road was finished before February 14 when the monarch and his wife would be buried.

The statement reads: “Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has directed the Ministry of Works to begin the immediate reconstruction of Eze I. O. Kanu road in Afaraukwu Ibeku, Umuahia North. This followed representations made to the Governor by the President-General of Isiama Afaraukwu Development Union, Chief Ikechukwu Ndubueze, who appealed on behalf of the community.

“The Ministry of Works has fully mobilised to site and working towards early completion.”

Ikpeazu has inaugurated a committee on the enrolment of Abia residents into the National Identity Data Base.

The effort, it was learnt, was to correct the wrong figure ascribed to the state during the last census, and to obtain a reliable database for accurate planning and governance.

The committee is chaired by Deputy Governor Ude Chukwu.

Ikpeazu, represented by his deputy, Ude Chukwu, who doubles as committee chairman, urged Abians to register at the nearest National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) office.

He admonished them to embark on enlightenment campaigns to mobilise Abians and residents to register.
