A 25-year-old estate agent, Ajunwa Eze, who allegedly obtained N80,000 on the pretext of securing a room for an accommodation seeker, was at the weekend charged before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court.
Eze, who lives in Amukoko, Apapa, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of stealing and obtaining money under false pretence.
Prosecutor Ferdinand Asu told the court that the accused committed the offences on December 3 at Agbamu Street, Amukoko.
He said the accused fraudulently obtained the sum from the complainant, Miss Florence Eze, in the guise of helping her to rent a room.
Asu said the accused converted the money to his personal use.
He said when the complainant did not receive any feedback from the accused, she asked for a refund.
The prosecutor said the accused had no intention of refunding the complainant’s money, and, therefore, started giving excuses.
“When the complainant got tired of his excuses, she reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested,” he said.
Chief Magistrate Michael Olubi granted the accused N50, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.
He said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Olubi adjourned the case till January 14 for mention.
