    RNI empowers vulnerable entrepreneurs

A nonprofit organisation, Refuge Network International (RNI) has reinforced its commitment to empowering marginalised communities through a targeted outreach to vulnerable small business owners along the Victoria Island coastal road, Lagos.

The initiative focused on supporting the poor, the homeless and petty traders who rely on small-scale businesses for survival.

Many of the beneficiaries face daily economic hardship and limited access to capital.

According to Santabenny, Special assistant for Refuge Network International, West Africa; the outreach was designed to restore hope and provide both immediate relief and long-term empowerment.

“Through this outreach, we brought smiles to many who had lost hope and provided much-needed support to families striving to survive through small businesses. It was a deeply fulfilling mission for both the beneficiaries and the volunteers who made it possible,” he said.

As part of the initiative, 40 selected beneficiaries received ₦50,000 each to support restocking, business continuity, and urgent financial needs.

In addition to the cash support, RNI’s team engaged beneficiaries in interactive sessions on basic financial management, investment awareness, and sustainable business growth, ensuring the funds are used effectively.

Speaking on the importance of the initiative, Ms. Lilian Dikeirem, a leader at RNI, emphasised the organisation’s broader mission.

“At RNI, we believe that empowering local businesses is key to driving economic growth and community development. One of our core missions is to empower the marginalized and alleviate human suffering. As an NGO passionate about the poor, the helpless, and the hopeless, today’s outreach truly brought our mission to life,” she said.

Several beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude and shared how the support would transform their livelihoods.

Wale Kayode said the funds would help her start her food business.

Uduak Innocent, overwhelmed by the gesture, promised to grow her business with the support.

Blessing Methombonadesh said she would use the money to boost her orange-selling business, while Sikira Kazeem, a pap and akara vendor, noted that the funds would help meet increasing customer demand, adding that she had been praying for more capital.

The beneficiaries and others who received support offered prayers and appreciation to Refuge Network International for what many described as a timely and surprising New Year gift.

RNI noted that continuing initiatives like this will not only create lasting positive impact in communities but also encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship, contributing to stronger and more resilient local economies.

Some of the wards have been taken over by suspected bandits for years, while inhabitants remained in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps.

A community leader, Chief Lawrence Akerigba, who spoke to The Nation on phone, said: “Farmers were harvesting yams and Barbara nuts when some unknown gunmen appeared from all directions and shot three persons dead.

“We have not seen this number of Fulani in our place. Everyday about 4am, they will start shooting. They don’t allow people to have access to the river bank to fetch water. They have  destroyed crops, houses and economic trees. Our children no longer go to school, churches closed, our markets destroyed.

“We received not much attention from the government. Any time our people are killed, they come with promises and at the end, nothing is done. We are at the mercy of the herders.’’

In Plateau State, suspected herdsmen on Tuesday killed four men: Mr. Pius Luka Dida, 23; Markus Danladi, 55; Peter, 27; and Acham Ayuba, 24 in Jot community in Riyom Local Government Area and Gero in Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area.

Berom youths lamented that the attacks were becoming too many. It blamed the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) under the leadership of Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, for twisting the facts about the attacks.

Beyond the killings, the herders also destroyed dry-season farmlands in Kwi, inflicting losses of over N14 million on  farmers.

The Berom youths, therefore, demanded the proscription of MACBAN.

Aggrieved ex-police officers lobby Tinubu for reinstatement

Some aggrieved police officers have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to comply with a judgment of the National Industrial Court (NIC) ordering their reinstatement after an alleged forceful and premature retirement.

The affected officers are members of Courses 33, 34, and 35 (Force Entrants) of the Police Academy, who joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1996, 1999, and 2000.

The officers had approached the NIC to challenge their compulsory retirement before attaining the statutory 35 years in service.

In a judgment delivered on April 19, 2022, Justice Oyewumi Oyebiola ordered the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Police Service Commission (PSC) and Force Secretary to reinstate the affected officers.

The court also restrained the defendants from compulsorily retiring them.

However, nearly three years after the judgment, the officers said the police authorities were yet to comply with the order.

However, in a letter to President Tinubu, their lawyer, Mr Adetoye Adejola, stated that the officers appealed to the President to intervene and ensure the implementation of the court judgment.

In the petition, entitled, “Re: Petition on non-implementation of the judgment of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/281/2021 between CSP Egong Egwu Egong & 3 Ors Vs. Police Service Commission & 2 Ors delivered on 19th April 2022, and a call to save the soul of members of Courses 33, 34, and 35 (Force Entrants) of the Police Academy”, the officers said despite the judgment, the police authorities allegedly stopped the payment of salaries to the officers, forced some into retirement, and rendered others still in service redundant by failing to assign them duties.

Commending President Tinubu for his recent directive withdrawing police officers attached to VIPs and redeploying them to frontline policing, they argued that the reinstated officers could help bridge manpower gaps in the force.

“These officers, many of whom are still agile and possess extensive operational and leadership experience, remain valuable assets to the nation,” the letter said.

The officers appealed to the president to order the immediate enforcement of the NIC judgment and recall the affected officers to service, particularly at a time of heightened insecurity across the country.

Police officers not buying uniforms, says AIG Zone 12

The new Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 12, Vungmoh S.M. Kwaimo, has dismissed claims that officers of the Nigeria Police Force purchase their uniforms, describing such narratives as misinformation borne out of ignorance.

Kwaimo, who oversees Bauchi and Gombe State commands, said police uniforms are centrally produced and distributed to officers.

“We discovered that people who don’t know are engaging in nonsense talk that the police buy uniforms. The police do not buy uniforms. Policemen are issued uniforms,” he said.

The AIG explained that uniforms are meant for all officers and are distributed periodically, adding that officers in charge of stores are usually invited to Abuja to collect them.

“What are they producing uniforms for, if not for everybody? Every time there is distribution, officers in charge of stores are invited to Abuja to come and take,” he stated.

Kwaimo recalled that while serving as Commissioner of Police, Railway Command, Ebute Meta, officers under his command had not collected uniforms for three years until he intervened to ensure they received their allocation.

“Just before I left Ebute Meta, for three years they had not been coming to Abuja. I was able to get uniforms for them. We must portray the image of the Force as an amiable one,” he added.

The AIG spoke shortly after assuming duty on Tuesday, as the 31st AIG of Zone 12, succeeding AIG Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, who retired from service upon attaining the statutory age.

While addressing officers of the zone, Kwaimo warned that his administration would not tolerate indiscipline, corruption, slackness or absenteeism from duty.

“I do not condone officers leaving their place of duty to engage in illegal activities. It will not be tolerated,” he said, adding that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, maintains zero tolerance for bribery and corruption.

He also reiterated the need for proper grooming and smart appearance, urging officers to dress well and conduct themselves professionally to boost public confidence.

“There are times when policemen appear shabby. Every year uniforms are distributed, yet you still see officers not dressing smartly. This must change,” he said.

Kwaimo further stressed the importance of supervision, noting that senior officers must properly guide and monitor junior officers to maintain discipline and morale within the Force.

The CP, it was gathered, was accompanied by heads of sister security agencies and the Commandant of the National Forest Rangers.

He said tactical teams, including Mobile Police Force officers and EOD had been deployed to the affected area, on the orders of the CP to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

Olayinka said preliminary reports indicate that the attackers, numbering about 12, emerged from adjoining bushes, opened sporadic gunfire on the Rangers’ Office, and fled the scene.

Olayinka said contrary to some media reports, the attack was directed at the National Forest Rangers’ Office, but the swift, proactive deployment of police personnel prevented any further escalation in the surrounding community.

He also pointed out that the site has been forensically swept to collect evidence.

He said during the visit of the CP, he also held an interactive session with community leaders of Oloka Community, where he expressed condolences over the loss of lives and reassured them of the commitment of the Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

He noted that upon receiving information about the attack, the CP deployed operatives and operational assets to the area, preventing further attack by the assailants and averting a potential breakdown of law and order.

Olayinka said: “Following the tragic attack on the National Forest Rangers’ Office at Oloka Village via Ikoyi-Ile, Oyo State, which occurred on Tuesday, 6th January 2026, at about 2330 hours, and claimed the lives of five officers, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Police Command, CP Femi Haruna, immediately conducted an on-the-spot security assessment of the affected area.

He said further, “Immediately upon receiving information about the attack, the CP deployed all available operatives and operational assets to the area, thereby preventing further attack by the assailants and averting a potential breakdown of law and order.

“The remains of the fallen officers have since been respectfully deposited, and the site was forensically swept to collect all available evidence.

“In furtherance of ongoing security measures, the Commissioner of Police directed the reinforcement of deployed personnel, including the deployment of additional intelligence operatives, alongside tactical teams and mobile personnel, to strengthen surveillance, intelligence gathering, and rapid response capabilities within the axis.

“The CP further mandated that no stone should be left unturned in ensuring the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of this heinous act.

“Investigation has commenced, and credible evidence is already yielding promising leads to aid the identification, arrest, and prosecution of those responsible.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the attackers, numbering about 12, emerged from adjoining bushes, opened sporadic gunfire on the Rangers’ Office, and fled the scene.

The Oyo State Police Command reiterates its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property across the state and assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the swift apprehension of the suspects and their eventual prosecution.

“The Commissioner of Police also appreciates the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for his continuous support and guidance, which has strengthened the operational capacity of the Command in tackling security challenges across the state.

A lawyer and former Treasurer of the Abuja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chigbo Princess Mediatrix, has been reported dead.

Her body was discovered by the roadside near the Dawaki area, opposite Gwarimpa Estate on the Kubwa Expressway in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by a commuter heading to work.

According to the source, “preliminary findings suggest that the deceased may have fallen victim to suspected mobile armed robbers, popularly known as “one chance” operators, who are notorious for targeting unsuspecting commuters within the FCT.

“Eyewitness accounts indicate that the circumstances surrounding her death point to a violent encounter.

“A handbag believed to belong to the deceased was found some distance away from her body, reinforcing suspicions that she may have been robbed and possibly pushed out of a moving vehicle.

“The incident has sent shockwaves across the legal community and the wider public, once again drawing attention to the persistent security threats faced by residents and commuters on major highways in Abuja.

The Nigeria Police Force, Dawaki Division, has been notified and has since taken custody of the body. Investigations into the cause and circumstances of her death are expected to start immediately.

“The police have appealed to members of the public who may know the deceased or her family to come forward. Relatives are advised to contact the Nigeria Police Force, Dawaki Division.

A group, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed displeasure over the continuous daring operations being carried out by “one-chance armed robbers in the FCT.”

HURIWA said the development indicates a clear absence of any sort of preventive security strategy and a strange lack of political and competent leadership in the nation’s capital.

HURIWA said the Federal Government did not have to wait for these killings to continue unabated before a major political decision was made to appoint a much more focused, committed, non-partisan patriotic technocrat to provide good governance, security of lives and property, sustainable development and tranquility to the good people of the FCT.

It described the recent killing of two women in the FCT, including a nurse, by gangs of armed one-chance robbers as clear signs that those appointed to provide good governance, stability, and security of lives and property of the residents and citizens of the FCT are engaged in other external activities unrelated to the core objectives of the essence of their appointments by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The group recalled that the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives Federal Health Institutions Sector expressed shock over the killing of a nurse, Chinemerem Chukwumeziem of the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja. HURIWA stated that the killing and that of many others could have been prevented if the political authorities in the FCT are made up of persons of dedicated service and by non-political administrators committed to deliver selfless services to citizens of Nigeria resident and engaging in lawful business activities in the FCT.

It added: “But, as it has become notorious, those assigned with the onerous task of protecting lives and property of Abuja residents are totally distracted by the politics of the next year’s general election thereby neglecting their primary responsibility as enshrined in the constitution of Nigeria.”

The group recalled that it was not just one person but indeed two women that were found dead in separate locations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in incidents suspected to be linked to the activities of notorious “one chance” criminal gangs operating within Nigeria’s capital.

One of the victims, Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem, was a nurse with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, whose killing subsequently drew condemnation from the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), FCT Council.

The second victim, identified as Princess Ochigbo, was said to be found lying lifeless by the roadside, with indications suggesting she might also have fallen victim to “one chance” hoodlums.

In the statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA urged President Bola Tinubu to appoint Mr. Nyesom Wike as his Director General of his presidential bid for 2027 so that a fresh, competent, totally focused professional administrator and technocrat is appointed to provided the much desired governance standards in the FCT given that the lives of citizens are no longer safe

The group wonders why the security forces in the FCT seemed to have gone to sleep and have proved to be incapable or unwilling to map out effective preventive security strategy to curb the incessant cases of bloody attacks by one chance armed robbers in the FCT.

The group said the government should give the citizens the right and licences to carry military grade AK-49 guns to protect themselves because the right to self-defence is constitutionally imperative and indeed provided for in chapter 4 of the 1999 constitution under Section 33 which is binding and enforceable.

HURIWA recalled that globally, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) of 1948 essentially, is the foundation and the fundamental of contemporary human rights law, including the right to life.

It added that in Nigeria, the right to life as a constitutionally guaranteed right is protected under Section 33 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended). While Section 33 strongly affirms the sanctity of life, its subsections 2(a) (b) (c) provide certain exceptions which legal scholars say poses formidable challenge to the absolute nature of this right.

HURIWA argued that since the FCT administration has demonstrated a clear absence of any sort of preventive security strategy to curb the constant killings of residents by one chance robbers and other armed criminal non-state actors, the president should direct that citizens be granted the legal permits to bear arms for self defence.
