    • Reports indicate 73% of Osun PHCs lack enough   staff to function—Oyebamiji
    • Osun is ranked first in PHC service—Adeleke

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) in Osun State, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO) and Governor Ademola Adeleke have locked horns over the condition of the state’s health sector.

The Nation recalled that Oyebamji promised a total overhaul of the Osun State health sector if elected in 2026 as the governor of Osun State, lamenting that the moribund state of health facilities across the state, describing the situation as a major setback to development.

Adeleke, however, disagreed with Oyebamiji, describing the allegation as a baseless disinformation attempt, noting that Osun is ranked first in the area of provision of primary healthcare in the Southwest, as over 200 centers have been renovated by his government.

“Under the previous government, the APC candidate was part of the committee that mismanaged the 20 million dollar World Bank grant meant for renovation of primary health care centers. Osun won’t return to the days of insensitive leaders.”

Reacting to the development, Oyebamiji, through his campaign movement coordinator, Adebayo Adedeji, insisted that there is decay in the Osun health sector since Adeleke came on board.

A statement on Saturday stated that insults on Oyebamjiji will not stop the fact that, in the public domain, a report published by CheckMyPHC.org, which has since been widely circulated by other news media, highlights a crucial workforce gap in the primary health centres in the state. It says 73% of PHCs lack enough staff to function; the majority of the PHCs (73%) have 0-1 personnel, 44% have 0 staff. This means almost 3 out of every 4 PHCs in Osun State are severely understaffed.

“The report also states that primary health centres in Osun State were found to be lacking clean water, working toilets and basic hygiene supplies, making it difficult for them to care for patients properly.”

The statement recalled that Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s administration, which Oyebamiji served, renovated over 300 PHCs out of 600, but the Adeleke government refused to build on the legacy.

“Adeleke administration chose to play uncharitable politics with the health of the people, sacked health workers employed by the APC government, badmouthed the facilities, which representatives of the World Bank- the donor agency for the project—had endorsed as world-class.

“The APC government’s contribution to health is eternally commendable. The records are there; therefore, no amount of name-calling can diminish such an outstanding achievement witnessed under the leadership of Oyetola.”

He added: “About 9,000 health workers are needed in Osun, yet the government has not recruited a single worker to replace those sacked out of jealousy and political vendetta”

  •  No further political ambition after being governor – Otti

No further political ambition after being governor – Otti

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has reiterated his long-standing position that he will retire from active politics after completing his term as governor, insisting that he has no presidential, vice presidential, or senatorial ambitions after his governorship.

Otti explained this at Government House in Umuahia, the state capital, while reacting to a viral video in which someone was berating him over his recent visit to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, alleging that he is nursing presidential or vice presidential ambitions after the end of his tenure.

The governor, while acknowledging that divergence of opinion is part of democracy, said everyone was free to hold an opinion and that such an opinion may not be right.

“In the first place, that is the beauty of democracy. So people should hold their opinion, and we respect people’s opinions. And that you hold a different opinion doesn’t mean you are right.

“One of the things he talked about was my ambition after being governor.

“And I had said it before, and I want to say it again, that by the time I’m done with governorship, I will retire.

“So I don’t have presidential ambition, or vice-presidential ambition. I also don’t have senatorial ambition when I finish with the governorship.

“I came on a mission, and when I deliver that mission, I will give way to younger people. He was talking of Igbo presidency, I don’t even understand what that means.

“So I think if his thesis is based on that assumption, the assumption has collapsed, because he won’t see me on the ballot,” the governor stated.

According to Otti, it is important for a political office holder to know when to quit, especially when he has done what he is asked to do.

“When you have done what you have been asked to do, you must take the exit door and give way to other people.

“We’ve seen people here, after being governor, who went back to become Local Government Chairmen. That’s not what we are here for. We are not cut out for those kinds of things.”

The governor, who used the opportunity to explain his reasons for visiting Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Sokoto Correctional Centre, said, “The second point is about Nnamdi Kanu. And I don’t want to put this matter in the public space so that it doesn’t derail the discussions that we are having.

“The truth about it is that exactly 24 months ago, I opened up discussions at the highest level on Nnamdi Kanu.

“And going to see him is the right thing to do, because he comes from my state. In fact, he comes from this Local Government, Umuahia North, the State Capital.”

“And there are always different ways to solve a problem. I don’t believe that the way to solve a problem is to ignore it. And I had written extensively, even about Nnamdi Kanu and ‘Operation Python Dance,’ I think in 2017 or 2018. I condemned it.

“And I still condemn it. I cannot vouch for some of the recordings that the gentleman put in his video, where he said Nnamdi Kanu called for mutiny. I don’t know about that. But then, I do know that two wrongs do not make a right,” the governor explained.

Otti, who insisted that he knows, that when an issue has been approached from the legal point of view, there is also another window, called ’the administrative point of view’.

“I’m not a lawyer. And if the judiciary says the man has been sentenced to life imprisonment, that is certainly not the end. Because that’s the court of first instance, there’s still an opportunity to appeal, and then an opportunity to even go to the Supreme Court.

“But what we are trying to do is to intervene. I’m not a supporter of the disintegration of Nigeria.

“So my position is that it would be insensitive of me to sit here and say one of our own who has been convicted should die when we have an opportunity to discuss, negotiate, and sue for peace.

“Even people convicted to death can be pardoned. That’s what I’m working on. It has nothing to do with non-existent presidential ambition. Everything is not politics,” the governor concluded.

Embrace hard work, integrity, Obi, Abaribe charge Shanahan varsity students

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi and Senator representing Abia North, Enyinnaya Abaribe have charged Nigerian students to embrace hard work and integrity.

The duo who stated this during the 2025/2026 matriculation ceremony of Shanahan University, at the Holy Basilica, Onitsha, Anambra State, charged 694 matriculants to aim for the top.

Obi said: “I have always told this story, I was born here in Onitsha, and I attended Waterside Primary School over there, then I proceeded to Christ the King College, here in Onitsha too.

“If there was a university in Onitsha, I would have attended one here. You are lucky we have universities in Onitsha today.

“I want to charge you all to take your education seriously. I’m where I am today because of education.

“I remember when Gen. Gowon was the Head of State, I was one of the primary school children who went to receive him when he visited Onitsha.

“Later in life, I and Gowon started sitting on the same table. That is what education can do; the reason I charge you to take it seriously.”

On his part, Abaribe who was the keynote speaker at the event underscored the place of integrity and diligence among young people, just as he urged them to shun get-rich-quick syndrome.

He said: “As young people, you must endeavour to steer clear of the many shiny, but temporary paths to success which have become so pervasive in our society today.

“I promise you, none of these paths will last; rather you will be left with nothing but regrets. Desist from “YahooYahoo”, other social media-influenced immorality, cultism, political sycophancy and boot-licking.

“These are not sustainable pathways which can only offer you temporary gratification, which suddenly fizzles into an emptiness that reveals a lack of value.”

“Embrace excellence in character and academics. Together, they equip you to succeed in the world and make a definitive impact as leaders.”

Earlier, Vice Chancellor of the institution, Rev. Fr. Prof. Josephat Oguejiofor pledged commitment of the institution to quality, assuring that the high standard set by management was attainable.

    Daniel Nwachukwu appointed 4th Vice-Chancellor of AE-FUNAI

The Governing Council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State, has appointed Daniel C. Nwachukwu as the 4th Vice-Chancellor of the university.

The appointment was announced on Saturday, 20 December 2025, following what the Council described as a painstaking, transparent and merit-driven selection process that involved over 40 senior academics.

After the screening exercise, eight candidates were shortlisted, while seven eventually appeared for the final interview.

Professor Nwachukwu is a Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology in the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC).

Until his appointment, he was the immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, a position he assumed in 2023.

An alumnus of the University of Lagos, Professor Nwachukwu obtained his first degree in Human Physiology in 1995.

He proceeded to the University of Benin where he earned his Master’s degree in 1997 and later completed his PhD in 2012.

He joined the services of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in July 1999 and rose through the ranks to become a Professor in 2016, marking over 26 years of distinguished service in academia.

Speaking to reporters shortly after his appointment, the new Vice Chancellor pledged to work with staff, students and stakeholders to reposition the university.

“I want to thank God for this opportunity. I believe He has a purpose for bringing me here. I want to assure both staff and students of AE-FUNAI that this marks a new beginning.

“This is my home, and we are going to work together to make the university a great place,” he said.

The new Vice-Chancellor outlined his administration’s priorities, which include infrastructural development, increased visibility, improved student population, and stronger engagement with host communities.

“The university needs infrastructure and visibility. You cannot attract students without adequate facilities,” he noted.

“We also need to dialogue with our host communities to ensure mutual understanding. A university should truly be a university, not a university and village combined.”

The Vice Chancellor also emphasized the need to diversify the institution’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) through multiple income streams and partnerships with the private sector to support infrastructural development.

“The university needs funds to run effectively, and we are going to diversify our IGR. We will also partner with the private sector to help us build the infrastructure we desperately need,” he said, while calling for sustained collaboration with the media to project the university’s image.

On his part, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University Governing Council, Anthony Nebo, described the selection process as fair and credible, stressing that integrity and competence guided the council’s decision.

“After screening, eight candidates emerged, and seven were interviewed. The process was transparent,” he said.

“My advice to the new Vice-Chancellor is to remain committed to the vision he has outlined. Together, with the cooperation of staff and stakeholders, we shall transform this university.”

Professor Daniel Nwachukwu hails from Okposi in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

     He is married with children.
