Akpabio, US Envoy hold talks to strengthen Nigeria – US relations

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jnr. held talks on Wednesday to strengthen the relations between the two countries.

The talks were held when the US Envoy paid a courtesy visit to the President of the Senate at the National Assembly in Abuja, where they expressed their desire for a more robust diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and America.

A statement by the Special Assistant on Media/Communication to the President of the Senate, Anietie Ekong, quoted Senator Akpabio as saying that Nigeria and America had a shared goal of operating a democratic system, as Nigeria’s democracy was modelled after the American system, and therefore, the need to nurture and preserve it.

According to Akpabio, “These are very difficult times, but I’m happy my distinguished colleagues are here, and we are having this engagement. This is a visit we have been looking forward to and even proposing to visit you and have an overview of the current situation between our two countries.

“I thank you for receiving me during the 249th Independence Anniversary of your country. I congratulate you. That means you have practised democracy for 249 years. We can’t say we have done the same in Nigeria.

“The collaboration between our countries is there, and our democracy and system of government is modelled after the United States of America.

“One thing that I do know is that America has remained prosperous and has assisted many countries in the world because of the strong belief that: In God we trust.

“In Nigeria, despite our religious and ethnic diversities, we also believe that God is the greatest. So we share something in common. You are welcome to the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Akpabio said.

In his brief remarks, Ambassador Mills said he was in the Senate to talk with the President of the Nigerian Senate about the US-Nigeria relations and how the two countries could strengthen their relations between them.

He said he would explore how the United States Mission, in particular, could further their shared goals, and also get a sense of the legislative agenda of the Nigerian Senate in the coming year.

  • Senate blocks bid to summon Wike over Abuja sanitation, land revocation claims

Senate blocks bid to summon Wike over Abuja sanitation, land revocation claims

The Senate on Wednesday halted a move to summon the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over allegations of worsening waste management, sewage failures, and the purported unlawful revocation and conversion of designated green areas in Abuja, citing procedural breaches.

The motion, sponsored by Senator Ireti Heebah Kingibe (LP, FCT), sought urgent Senate intervention in what she described as a sanitation and environmental crisis in the nation’s capital, alongside alleged violations of the Abuja Master Plan and the seizure of land belonging to Bwari General Hospital.

Leading the debate under Orders 41 and 51, which permit the raising of urgent matters without prior notice, Kingibe warned that municipal waste collection in several parts of Abuja had collapsed, resulting in the accumulation of refuse in residential, commercial, and public spaces for weeks.

She attributed the situation to non-payment of workers and contractors under the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and other FCT agencies for about nine months.

According to her, former waste management contractors were owed between March and October 2025, while new contracts awarded in mid-November retained only half of the previous operators.

She added that the newly engaged contractors had informed the FCT Minister that operations could not commence without a 30 per cent mobilisation fee, further delaying waste collection and sewage services.

Kingibe cautioned that sewage blockages and uncollected waste had built up for nearly eight months, exposing residents to serious sanitation and public health risks, including waterborne diseases and environmental contamination.

She also accused the FCT Administration of undermining the Abuja Master Plan through the conversion of designated green areas meant to serve as environmental buffers and service corridors for utilities.

The senator alleged that some revocations and reallocations were carried out despite pending court cases, naming the University of Abuja as a major casualty, with about 7,000 hectares of its original land reportedly taken over or reallocated.

However, Senate President Godswill Akpabio ruled that the motion was procedurally defective.

He explained that while Kingibe had notified the Senate leadership of a motion on rising solid waste and its health implications, she expanded her submissions to include land revocation and other issues not covered by the notice.

“The order cited permits debate on a specific urgent matter. To address all the other issues raised, a substantive motion on notice is required,” Akpabio said.

Support for the motion also waned during the debate. Senator Tahir Monguno (Borno North), who initially backed the call to summon the FCT Minister, withdrew his support.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin dismissed the allegations against Wike as unfounded, arguing that the minister’s achievements in Abuja were visible.

“There are now developments in the FCT. The current minister has changed the face of Abuja. You cannot solve all problems at the same time,” Jibrin said, urging engagement through the relevant Senate committees instead.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele also called for the withdrawal of the motion on procedural grounds, advising that the issues be reintroduced through a properly constituted substantive motion.

Following the interventions, Akpabio asked Kingibe to withdraw the motion and re-present it in line with Senate rules.

She complied, pledging to bring it back as a substantive motion focused on waste management.

…enduring solution to farmer-herder crisis key to food security — Shettima

…Kebbi governor to chair six-zone panel

The National Economic Council (NEC) has constituted a high-level committee on livestock development to accelerate the implementation of reforms aimed at transforming Nigeria’s livestock sector and resolving the long-running farmer-herder crisis.

The committee was set up on Wednesday during the 155th meeting of the NEC, held virtually, as Vice President Kashim Shettima said only a practical, enduring, and nationally accepted solution to the farmer-herder conflict would guarantee food security in the country.

The Livestock Development Committee is made up of one representative from each of the six geo-political zones: Bauchi State for the North-East, Niger State for the North-Central, Ondo State for the South-West, Imo State for the South-East, Cross River State for the South-South, and Kebbi State for the North-West.

The Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, will chair the committee.

Other members include the Ministers of Livestock Development, Agriculture and Food Security; Budget and Economic Planning, as well as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Agribusiness in the Office of the Vice President.

NEC directed the committee to work with relevant stakeholders to review the recommendations of the Presidential Livestock Reform Committee (PLRC) and proposals submitted by the Ministry of Livestock Development, as well as identify states willing to participate in the implementation of the programme.

The move follows a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting of Wednesday, December 10, 2025, mandating the NEC to collaborate with the Ministry of Livestock Development to produce a clear roadmap for transforming Nigeria’s livestock industry.

The ministry subsequently developed a proposal presented to the council for endorsement, to reposition the livestock sector as a modern, peaceful, and profitable engine of national development.

In his opening remarks, Vice President Shettima, who chairs NEC, said food security was a moral obligation to Nigerians but stressed that it could not be achieved without addressing the root causes of farmer-herder violence.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications Office of the Vice President Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said “we must acknowledge with absolute regret the deep distrust created by this violence, born out of a trade and an ancestral practice that ought to have remained a central pillar of our food security and rural economy.

“The loss of lives, the destruction of homes, and the devastation of farmlands must end”, he said.

According to him, mismanagement of long-standing tensions between farmers and herders had fuelled conflicts that have spread across the country.

“What started as a challenge of coexistence gradually hardened into cycles of violence that were allowed to persist for far too long without a durable solution.

“Today, that violence respects no geography. It has become a shared nightmare that has scarred every region, disrupted livelihoods, and eroded trust between neighbours who once relied on one another for survival”, the Vice President said.

Shettima commended President Tinubu for what he described as a bold initiative to integrate livestock production into the national economy, noting that the creation of a dedicated Ministry of Livestock Development underscored the administration’s commitment to the sector.

He urged state governors to take the livestock development presentations by the ministry and the PLRC seriously, saying the sector offered major opportunities for economic transformation, conflict resolution, and the restoration of peace in affected communities.

“The presentations before us today offer critical insight into responses designed to confront these realities. They speak directly to stabilising our food systems, restoring confidence in rural economies, and reducing the security pressures that flow from competition over land, water, and livelihoods.

“At their core, these presentations seek to dispel the false choice between agriculture and security by demonstrating that both are inseparable pillars of national stability,” Shettima added.

He assured that the recommendations of the PLRC and the Ministry of Livestock Development would receive priority attention from the Tinubu administration, while calling on sub-national governments to support efforts to fully harness the vast potential of the livestock sector.

Operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have uncovered a large cache of counterfeit foreign currencies valued at $3.43 million and €280,000 from a five-member syndicate accused of defrauding a victim of N26.55 million.

The suspects, identified as herbalists Akingbola Omotayo, Adeola Funsho Ogunrinde, Yahaya Amodu, Kubratu Babalola Olaitan, and Familola Sunday Olaitan, were arrested on December 7 and 8, 2025, at their shrines in Osun and Lagos states following intelligence-led surveillance of their alleged fraudulent activities.

In a statement on Wednesday, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly swindled unsuspecting victims under the guise of offering spiritual cleansing and remedies for various ailments.

Oyewale explained that the syndicate also allegedly claimed to possess powers to conjure large sums of money, which they told victims had to be spiritually cleansed by a genie through sacrifices before being spent. Victims were reportedly hypnotised into providing money for the supposed sacrifices.

He added that two exotic vehicles and several mobile phones were recovered from the suspects during the operation.

Oyewale said the suspects would be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Kano NLC backs Tinubu’s security measures, leads peaceful rally

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s tougher measures to tackle insecurity, describing improved national security as essential for economic growth, workers’ welfare, and democratic stability.

The union made its position known in Kano while leading a peaceful rally, part of a nationwide action approved by the NLC National Executive Council.

The demonstration aimed to raise public awareness and strengthen government efforts at both the federal and state levels to address security challenges across the country, the union said.

Speaking on behalf of NLC President, Joe Ajaero, Muttaqa Yusha’u said, “The rallies, held simultaneously across Nigeria, emphasised the need for a coordinated and inclusive approach to security management.”

“Persistent insecurity has become a major national concern, undermining development and threatening livelihoods across sectors.

“Workers create the wealth of this nation, but they cannot do so in an atmosphere of fear,” he said.

The NLC presented a letter outlining its recommendations, calling for enhanced collaboration among security agencies, governments, traditional rulers, community leaders, and workers’ organisations.

The union stressed, “The importance of sustained social dialogue as a pillar for addressing insecurity and strengthening democracy.”

Kano State NLC Chairman, Kabiru Inuwa, commended President Tinubu for engaging labour leaders and urged states to develop homegrown solutions in collaboration with the Presidency.

Receiving the NLC letter on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Chief of Staff Dr. Suleiman Sani Wali praised the peaceful and organised nature of the rally, describing it as ‘a constructive engagement rather than confrontation.’

He assured the Union that the Governor would study the submissions and forward them, alongside the Union’s recommendations, to President Tinubu.

The Police Command in Kano on Wednesday deployed officers to ensure a peaceful protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state.

Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, had earlier informed that police would provide security at the protest venues and other public buildings to maintain law and order.

Bakori said the deployment was aimed at guaranteeing the safety of participants and preventing any disruption of public order.

The police command on Wednesday said officers were deployed to key locations, including the protest route and public buildings, to maintain order and safeguard participants.

Bakori reiterated the Force’s commitment to upholding the right to peaceful assembly while ensuring the safety of residents and property.

He added that the police coordinated with NLC officials to facilitate a smooth and incident‑free demonstration.

The NLC staged a peaceful march in Kano as part of its nationwide protest over economic concerns.
