Ilorin NBA to fete Senator Mustapha at annual Bar dinner

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ilorin Branch, has announced that its 2025 Annual Bar Dinner and Award Night will be held in honour of Senator Saliu Mustapha, marking the first time in the branch’s history that the event is being dedicated to a non-lawyer.

The dinner, scheduled for 20 December 2025 at the Arca Santa Arena, Ilorin, is expected to attract leading legal practitioners, academics, and key stakeholders in the justice sector.

In a statement signed by the Publicity Secretary of the branch, A.O. Ahmed-Aliagan, the NBA said the honour is in recognition of Senator Mustapha’s “consistent goodwill, steadfast support and enduring relationship with the Ilorin Bar.”

Senator Mustapha, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly and holds the traditional title of Turaki of Ilorin Emirate, has, over the years, provided institutional and personal support to the branch, the association said, adding that his contributions have strengthened the activities and cohesion of the Ilorin Bar.

The NBA also announced a list of distinguished personalities to be honoured at the event for their contributions to the legal profession and the wider society. They include retired jurist, Justice Hannah Ajayi; law professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mubarak Adekilekun; Abdulsalam Yunus, SAN; Lukman Fagbemi, SAN; and Ghazali Shafiu, Officer-in-Charge of Monitoring.

A special philanthropic award will also be presented to Alhaji Tajudeen Ajibola Ibrahim Eleku, a business leader and prominent figure in the construction industry, in recognition of his contributions to humanitarian causes.

According to the statement, the 2025 Bar Dinner will serve not only as a social gathering but also as a platform to reflect on professional values, celebrate institutional memory, and strengthen bonds among members of the Ilorin Bar and its partners.

“The Bar Dinner remains a forum for celebrating tradition and honouring service,” the statement said, urging members and stakeholders to attend what it described as an eventful and memorable evening.

CBN orders PoS terminal providers to connect system to NIBSS, UPSL

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed all acquirers, processors, and Payment Terminal Service Providers (PTSPs) to implement mandatory dual connectivity with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) and Unified Payment Services Limited (UPSL) for Point of Sale (PoS) transactions within one month.

The apex bank announced the directive in a December 11, 2025, memo signed by the CBN’s director of the payments system supervision department, Rakiya Yusuf.

The  Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) already plans to commence a nationwide clampdown on unregistered PoS agents effective January 1, 2026, as part of fresh efforts to curb money laundering in the country.

The commission directed all operators to regularise their businesses before Jan. 1, 2026.

The commission said the directive became necessary following the rising number of PoS operators conducting business without registration, which it said violates the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Agent Banking Regulations.

The CAC described the trend as a reckless practice often enabled by some fintech companies.

This, it said, poses significant risks to the country’s financial system and the investments of citizens.

It said that beginning Jan. 1, 2026, no PoS operator would be allowed to operate without CAC registration, adding that security agencies have been mandated to enforce full compliance nationwide.

“Unregistered PoS terminals will be seized or shut down by security officials. Fintechs enabling illegal operations will be placed on the watch list and reported to the CBN.

“All operators are advised to regularise immediately, and compliance is mandatory,” the statement said.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring orderliness within the sector.

It said the directive aligned with broader efforts to sanitise the financial services space and strengthen regulatory compliance for the protection of users and investors.

It added that the enforcement drive underscored its resolve to promote transparency, safeguard the economy, and deliver prompt and efficient services in line with its mandate.

Tinubu to Wike @ 58: You’re a shining star in my cabinet

    • No regret supporting President, says minister

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, on his 58th birthday, describing him as an audacious and results-driven public servant whose performance has stood out in his administration.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President described Wike as one of the shining stars in his cabinet.

Tinubu celebrated the former Rivers State governor for a life marked by purpose, service and courage, while thanking God for his contributions to national development.

Tinubu praised Wike as a top performer who consistently defies obstacles and delivers tangible results, particularly in the ongoing transformation of the Federal Capital Territory through aggressive infrastructure expansion.

The President specifically highlighted the minister’s recent intervention that broke a 14-year deadlock on the construction of the Apo–Karshi Road, describing the development as emblematic of Wike’s problem-solving approach to governance.

Commending the minister’s resilience and “can-do” attitude, Tinubu noted that Wike’s commitment to excellence has translated into visible improvements across the FCT, reinforcing public confidence in the delivery of critical infrastructure.

“Nyesom Wike has been one of the shining stars in the cabinet, an exceptional performer, developing infrastructure in the Federal Capital as never seen before and proving that his moniker as ‘Mr Project’ is not limited to his home state of Rivers,” the President said.

He further acknowledged Wike’s role as one of the champions of the Renewed Hope Agenda, despite belonging to a different political party, describing his performance as a testament to national service beyond partisan considerations.

Mr.  President wished the FCT minister a happy birthday and prayed for renewed strength as he continues his work to advance development and service delivery in the nation’s capital.

“I commend him for being one of the champions of our Renewed Hope Agenda, even though he belongs to another party and wish him well as he marks another year in his life journey”, the President said.

No regret supporting President Tinubu– Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Nyesom Wike, celebrating his 58th birthday  Saturday said he has no regrets openly supporting President Bola Tinubu, since 2022.

Wike maintained that his position has remained consistent before, during and after the 2023 presidential election.

The Minister, who spoke at a special event organised to mark his 58th birthday anniversary, said his political decisions are guided by the principles of character and integrity, adding that he never concealed his support for Tinubu from the outset.

He recalled that during the build-up to the 2023 presidential election, he was the only leading figure from the main opposition party, who openly declared support for President Tinubu, a decision he said was based on equity, fairness and justice, as well as his conviction that power should shift to the South.

According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA), Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the minister further argued that his leadership capacity was demonstrated in Rivers State during the elections, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the presidential poll while the PDP secured victories in the National Assembly, governorship, State House of Assembly and local government elections under his watch.

At the birthday event held in the wee hours of yesterday, in Wike’s residence in Abuja, leaders from different political divides gathered to celebrate the achievements and political impact of the former Rivers State Governor and current FCT Minister.

In attendance were National Assembly lawmakers from Rivers State, serving and former members, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, chairmen of local government areas, as well as close friends and political associates.

Speakers took turns to extol the virtues of the Minister, describing him as an achiever and astute politician whose impacts are visible across the country, urging him not to relent and assuring him of their continued support.

Rivers State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors and former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, described the FCT Minister  as the “naked wire” of Rivers politics.

Akawor, who is the ex-Director-General of Nyesom Wike’s 2015 governorship campaign, said Wike’s feat had shown that President Bola Tinubu picked the right product from the PDP to work with.

Also, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly,  Martins Amaewhule, who led 27 members of the House of Assembly to Wike’s residence, thanked the Minister for being a leader with a strong shoulder for everyone to lean on.

He promised the continued loyalty and support of the Assembly members to him, saying; “Wherever our leader (Wike) goes, we will follow him, whoever he is supporting, we will also support.”

Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government and River State Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon. Allwell Ihunda, who spoke on behalf of Local Government Chairmen, extolled Wike’s virtues, describing as a consistent and compassionate leader.

Others who spoke were Chairman of the PDP National Caretaker Committee,  Mohammed Abdulrahman,  PDP Board of Trustees Chairman,  Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, PDP National Vice Chairman (South South), Chief Dan Orbih, his All Progressives Congress counterpart, Hon Victor Giadom,

former Governor of Abia State,  Dr Okieze Ikpiazu,  Senator (Prof) Sandy Onor,  Senator Magnus Abe,  Senator George Sekibo, Senator Bari Mpigi, and others.

In his response, the Minister thanked his political family and associates for standing solidly behind him, acknowledging the role they have played in shaping his leadership journey.

He said he remained fulfilled working with his people and pledged to continue collaborating closely with them in the interest of the people of Rivers State and Nigeria at large.

Wike, who described criticism and abuses as one of the things that keep him going,  added that he has never been bothered by those who abuse and criticise him.

The event ended with special prayers for the Minister and his family.

Tinubu moves to reposition NIPSS as global policy hub by 2030 — Shettima

    • FG bars CPs, permanent secretaries from courses

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remodel the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) into a digitally driven, financially stable and globally recognised centre of excellence by the year 2030.

Shettima gave the assurance on Saturday in Kuru, Plateau State, while representing the President at the graduation ceremony of participants of the Senior Executive Course (SEC) 47 of the institute. He described the transformation of NIPSS as central to the Federal Government’s broader agenda of strengthening evidence-based policymaking and leadership development in Nigeria.

According to the Vice President, the Tinubu administration regards NIPSS as the nation’s most strategic platform for nurturing thinkers, reformers and innovators, as well as a crucible where ideas that shape policy, guide reforms and influence national development are forged.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima quoted President Tinubu as being unequivocal in his support for NIPSS’ reform agenda, particularly its ambition to emerge as a globally respected policy and strategic research institution by 2030.

He stressed that Federal Government support for the institute would go beyond funding and infrastructure to ensuring that its research outputs are practical and directly integrated into national decision-making.

“Our support must therefore go beyond funding, infrastructure and a conducive research environment. It must ensure that NIPSS produces implementation-ready policy papers and that its outputs are fully integrated into national decision-making and execution frameworks,” Shettima said.

In a major policy shift, the Vice President disclosed that the Federal Government has stopped the participation of Commissioners of Police and Permanent Secretaries in NIPSS courses, citing limited post-graduation service years as a constraint to policy application.

“Hitherto, we were admitting Commissioners of Police and Permanent Secretaries for policy research courses at NIPSS, but six months after graduation they are retired after going through such rigorous exercise and acquiring so much knowledge. If this is not madness, I need to be told the meaning of madness,” he said.

He explained that admission has now been restricted to officers in the ranks of Deputy Commissioners of Police and Deputy Directors in the civil service, who have longer service years to apply the knowledge gained.

“For SEC 47 and subsequent courses, Mr President has approved minimum entry requirements to deputy cadres. This should usher in a more vibrant academic atmosphere and greater policy impact,” Shettima added.

Commending the theme of the course, “Blue Economy and Sustainable Economic Development in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities,” the Vice President described it as timely, noting its relevance to national development, security, environmental sustainability and social inclusion.

He said the participants’ research on the maritime domain underscored the interconnection between security, livelihoods, food security, environmental protection and national cohesion, assuring that relevant ministries, departments and agencies have been directed to study the report for immediate and long-term policy application.

“Graduands of SEC 47, your responsibility begins now. You are expected to rise above routine administration and become agents of transformation,” he charged, describing NIPSS as a true national asset whose value lies in translating knowledge into policy, policy into action and action into measurable national progress.

Earlier, the Director-General of NIPSS, Prof. Ayo Omotayo, said the course theme was assigned by President Tinubu at the inauguration of SEC 47, challenging participants to critically examine Nigeria’s marine assets, national competitiveness and environmental sustainability.

He said the study had attracted commendation from the Presidency for its insights into ports modernisation, fisheries governance, maritime security, renewable energy potential, coastal resilience and private sector innovation, adding that its recommendations would continue to inform national policy as Nigeria intensifies efforts to diversify its economy.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, congratulated the graduands on attaining the “mni” status, commending them for successfully completing the rigorous research process and urging them to deploy their knowledge as solution providers to Nigeria’s development challenges. He also praised the Federal Government for sustaining a peaceful environment in Kuru that allows NIPSS to function effectively.

Chairman of the NIPSS Board, Senator Ken Nnamani, urged authorities at all levels of government to adopt and implement research outputs from the institute, expressing confidence in the Tinubu administration’s commitment to research-driven governance.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the President of the NIPSS Alumni Association, Ambassador Emmanuel Okafor, and the Monitor-General of SEC 47, Col. Mukhtar Sani Daroda, who pledged the graduands’ continued service to the nation.

Highlights of the ceremony included the presentation of certificates by the Vice President, induction of the graduands into the NIPSS Alumni Association, and the inauguration of four units of two-bedroom apartments donated to the institute by SEC 47 participants.

Meanwhile, Shettima also interacted with strawberry farmers in Plateau State, reiterating the Federal Government’s resolve to transform Nigeria’s agricultural value chain in line with President Tinubu’s development agenda.

Aina stages dramatic return after four months injury

Forty-Eight hours after being left out of Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 squad, Super Eagles defender Ola Aina made a dramatic return, featuring for Nottingham Forest’s academy side in what can only be described as a bittersweet comeback.

The Super Eagles defender, who hadn’t played since Nigeria’s ill-fated World Cup qualifier against South Africa four months ago, stepped onto the pitch on Friday night as Forest’s academy maintained their impressive Premier League 2 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Millwall.

The timing could hardly have been more heartbreaking. Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle had just named his 28-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, introducing five new faces including a fresh right-back option. Aina’s name was notably absent from the list.

Yet if the omission stung, the 29-year-old showed no signs of dwelling on disappointment. Playing for over an hour under the guidance of former Manchester United academy boss Warren Joyce, Aina looked sharp and determined, directly contributing to Forest’s success on the night.

The match began with intent from the home side. Adam Berry fired Forest ahead after Danny Anisjko was brought down on the edge of the area, with Berry converting the resulting free-kick with precision and beauty.

NFF issues AFCON 2025 final ultimatum to Chelle

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has given Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle the ultimatum to guide the team to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in Morocco, or the experiment will be deemed a failure.

Speaking on Eagle FM, as shared on X, Gusau outlined the expectations placed on the Malian tactician, who was handed the reins of Nigerian football amid controversy and scepticism just weeks ago.

“The mandate given to Eric Chelle is to get to the AFCON final,” Gusau declared, leaving no room for ambiguity about what constitutes success for the 47-year-old coach.

The appointment of Chelle raised eyebrows across Nigerian football. A relatively unknown quantity on the international stage, the former Mali assistant coach and Djoliba AC manager was chosen over several high-profile candidates who had been linked with the position.

Now, with AFCON 2025 on the horizon in Morocco, Gusau has made it crystal clear that anything short of a final appearance will not be acceptable. It’s a bold mandate that reflects both the NFF’s ambition and the immense pressure on a coach still finding his feet with a squad blessed with talent but hungry for silverware.

Nigeria last reached an AFCON final in 2013, when they defeated Burkina Faso to lift their third continental crown. Since then, the Super Eagles have endured a frustrating run of near-misses and underachievement on the African stage, including a disappointing group-stage exit at AFCON 2021 and a second-place finish in 2023 that ended in heartbreak against Cote d’Ivoire.

Palmer returns with goal as Chelsea end winless run

Cole Palmer scored his first goal since September as Chelsea ended a four-game winless run with a 2-0 victory over in-form Everton at Stamford Bridge.

The 23-year-old forward, still managing a groin injury that kept him out for more than two months, opened the scoring after 21 minutes in front of England manager Thomas Tuchel.

Right-back Malo Gusto, who set up Palmer’s goal, added a second just before half-time.

Everton dominated the opening 20 minutes, with Iliman Ndiaye having two shots on goal and James Garner also going close.

But the aptly nicknamed ‘Cold’ Palmer calmed Chelsea’s nerves after a poor start to December, which included defeats at Leeds and Atalanta and a draw at Bournemouth.

Played in behind Everton’s defence by Gusto, Palmer took a touch before sending goalkeeper Jordan Pickford the wrong way with a finish into the near post.

Momentum then swung Chelsea’s way. Alejandro Garnacho missed several chances, including shooting wide for an open goal after capitalising on substitute Carlos Alcaraz’s poor back pass, moments after injured Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall came off with an injury against his former club.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Everton’s Jack Grealish also had opportunities before the home side doubled their lead just before the break, with Gusto reacting quickest to turn in Pedro Neto’s cross.

In the second half, Garnacho scooped a close-range shot over before being replaced by Jamie Gittens. Grealish had a header saved and volleyed wide – the latter a chance that should have seen him pull one back – while Ndiaye hit a late shot against the post and Trevoh Chalobah blocked another from Alcaraz inside the box.

Superior finishing proved decisive for Chelsea, who consolidated fourth place in the Premier League, while Everton remain eighth having played a game more than most of their rivals.

Galatasaray in-form striker Victor Osimhen added to his Super Lig tally, yesterday, with a 56th-minute goal, the third in Gala’s 4-1 victory over Antalyaspor.

Galatasaray took a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute. Following a pass from Yunus Akgün, Sane entered the penalty area, and his shot from the right found the back of the net, beating goalkeeper Abdullah Yiğiter: 0-1

In the 11th minute, Galatasaray doubled its lead. Barış Alper Yılmaz, receiving the ball on the left wing, passed to Sallai just outside the penalty area, whose shot beat goalkeeper Yiğiter on his right and found the back of the net: 0-2

In the 56th minute, Galatasaray extended its lead to three. In a fast-paced Galatasaray attack, Yunus Akgün’s long pass from his own half found Osimhen on the left wing, who quickly entered the penalty area and sent the ball into the net to the left of goalkeeper Abdullah Yiğiter: 0-3

Meanwhile, Galatasaray commentator Uğur Karakullukçu has provided the latest update on Galatasaray’s interest in Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman.

According to Karakullukçu, Galatasaray are reportedly shifting their transfer focus towards Salah ahead of Lookman.

Both Salah and Lookman have been linked with a move to the Turkish Super Lig champions.

Lookman failed to leave Atalanta last summer and has just been reintegrated in the squad, while Salah had issues with Liverpool and was left out of the side that defeated Inter Milan in the Champions League.

Named on the bench by Slot, the Egyptian forward came on in the 26th minute after defender Joe Gomez was forced off with an injury and Dominik Szoboszlai slotted in at right-back.

Earlier, Gomez played his part in Liverpool’s opener as his header found Ekitike, who took one touch and volleyed past Bart Verbruggen after just 46 seconds – the quickest Premier League goal of the season so far.

Brighton had chances to level but failed to take them, with an outstretched leg from Alisson denying Diego Gomez, who was through on goal, before Gomez also missed an open goal after the break.
