HJRBDA boss hails Tinubu over rescue of Kebbi, Niger abducted students

Managing Director of Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority (HJRBDA), Alhaji Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, on Tuesday commended President Bola Tinubu for his decisive and personal intervention in the successful rescue operations of the abducted students from Kebbi and Niger States.

All the 24 schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu local government area of Kebbi State, have been rescued.

Also, 100 of the total 227 students, including 12 teachers, abducted from St Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Niger state, have returned safely to their families.

Meanwhile, the rescue operation has been intensified, with renewed efforts to secure the release of the remaining 115 pupils and their teachers, as well as the safe return of all victims.

In a statement issued from his office in Kano, Alhaji Bichi expressed profound appreciation for the president’s demonstration of “exceptional leadership and deep-seated concern” for the security and welfare of Nigerian citizens.

“We must acknowledge and sincerely appreciate President Bola Tinubu for his great concern and bold moves taken in rescuing our precious children.

“History shows that while past administrations often limited their response to strong condemnations, President Tinubu went a decisive step further by personally aborting an important international trip to Johannesburg to commandeer the rescue mission.

“This hands-on approach underscores a new proactive standard in leadership at the highest level,” Alhaji Bichi stated.

The HJRBDA boss observed what he described as a concerning trend in public discourse, where tragedies are met with swift condemnation of the government and blame placed on the president, often with accusations of inaction.

“It has become a pattern that when such heartbreaking tragedies strike, the focus is predominantly to blame the government and the president for allowing it to happen or for perceived delays in response.

“However, there is a palpable reluctance to extend credit to where it is due when the same president and our security forces, especially the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, demonstrated courage, dedication, and ultimately averted greater catastrophe, rescuing the victims,” he noted.

Alhaji Bichi emphasised that while holding leadership accountable is a vital aspect of democracy, fairness demands that exemplary acts of courage and successful operations should also attract national acknowledgment and support. This, he argued, strengthens national morale, motivates security agencies, and, in this regard, will encourage the leaders to ensure the successful rescue of all the kidnapped victims.

According to Bichi, the successful rescue of the affected students is a victory for the nation, made possible by the president’s direct involvement and the tireless efforts of our security personnel.

He noted, “Let us be a people who are balanced in our engagement—constructive in criticism, but also generous in praise where praise is earned. This is essential for building a united front against the challenges we face.”

Bichi reiterated the commitment of the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority under his leadership in supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda of the federal government, particularly in fostering sustainable development and security in communities.

  • Chelle sweats on Super Eagles final squad for AFCON 2025

Chelle sweats on Super Eagles final squad for AFCON 2025

The upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco has put Nigeria’s Super Eagles under intense scrutiny as head coach Eric Chelle prepares to finalize his 28-man squad.

Chelle is expected to announce the roster this week, ahead of the tournament kicking off later this month.

His  initial 54-man provisional squad drew mixed reactions, with critics urging for more players to be given international opportunities. The decision by FIFA to shorten preparation time to just about a week has complicated squad selection, limiting the possibility of a full overhaul.

Chelle, according to SCORENigeria, plans to bring in “four or five new players” to refresh the team.

Among those likely to be included are  Ryan Alebiosu, the Blackburn Rovers’ promising right-back and Arsenal academy graduate making waves in the English Championship.

Others Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, the  21-year-old defensive midfielder on loan to Pisa from Inter Milan who is  seen as part of the team’s future, especially as Nigeria transitions after missing out on World Cup qualification.

There is also Igoh Ogbu, the Slavia Praha’s central defender with previous national team exposure who could get another shot given injuries and absences in defense  while  experienced Trabzonspor’s striker, Paul Onuachu who is the Turkish Super Lig’s top scorer this season with 11 goals, expected to be recalled to provide more attacking options alongside Victor Osimhen.

But significant absences   may include  injured Ola Aina as well as Bright Osayi-Samuel who has been struggling for playing time at  Birmingham City.

The final squads must be submitted by Thursday, which adds urgency to Chelle’s decision-making.

The AFCON 2025 will provide an important platform for emerging Nigerian players to prove themselves on a big stage while also testing the blend of youthful energy and experienced stars like Onuachu and Osimhen. Fans and stakeholders await the final squad announcement amid hopes for a strong showing in Morocco.

  • Pre-AFCON friendly: Super Eagles, Pharaohs may clash in Morocco

Pre-AFCON friendly: Super Eagles, Pharaohs may clash in Morocco

The highly anticipated  international friendly match between  Egypt and Nigeria may now be played  in Morocco as both countries  finalize plans for  the upcoming Afria Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025.

According to Soccernet, EFA Vice President Khaled El-Darandaly announced the rescheduled date, explaining that FIFA’s updated international release directive had forced both nations to adjust their final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) preparations.

The Pharaohs were originally set to face the Super Eagles on 14 December as part of their build-up to AFCON 2025, which runs from 21 December to 18 January in Morocco.

But FIFA’s new circular now allows clubs to hold on to African players until 15 December, leaving both sides without access to their full squads for the initial date.

The change was critical for Egypt, who expect key players such as Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush to arrive only after the new release window. It also affects Nigeria significantly, with the majority of Eric Chelle’s core squad playing in Europe.

Egypt, seven-time African champions, are seeking their first continental title since 2010 and have been drawn in Group B alongside South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe.

They reached the final in both 2017 and 2021 but fell short to Cameroon and Senegal respectively.

Head coach Hossam Hassan named his 28-man preliminary squad earlier in the week, with players gathering in Cairo on Wednesday for the final preparation camp.

For Nigeria, FIFA’s directive triggered a larger logistical upheaval. The Super Eagles were scheduled to open camp in Cairo on 10 December, followed by friendlies and a prompt flight to Morocco. That plan has now collapsed.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reportedly put a new training blueprint in place. Under the revised programme, the Super Eagles will open camp only on 14 December, giving Chelle barely a week to prepare before AFCON kicks off.

Nigeria will now meet Egypt on 16 December, though several uncertainties persist, including which players will be available and where the match will actually be played. Cairo is no longer feasible, and both federations are considering shifting the fixture to Morocco, where both camps hope to be based.

Nigeria’s build-up has been further complicated by injuries to Ola Aina, Taiwo Awoniyi, Benjamin Fredrick and Felix Agu, while captain William Troost-Ekong announced his international retirement on Thursday. The 2023 AFCON Player of the Tournament had been central to Nigeria’s defensive leadership, making his withdrawal a heavy blow.

Chelle, who released a 55-man provisional list this week, must now trim to 28 amid a compressed schedule. Nigeria, drawn in Group C with Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania, are chasing a fourth continental crown after triumphs in 1980, 1994 and 2013.

AFCON hopeful Uche admits Palace frustration

Super Eagles  AFCON hopeful Christantus Uche  has admitted been unhappy at Crystal Palace.

On-loan from Getafe this season, Uche who is listed in the Super Eagles 54-man provisional list  for the upcoming  AFCON  2025 in Morocco,  has struggled for action under Palace manager Oliver Glasner.

And he posted, stating: “It hurts when you go through something that kills you inside, but you have to act like it doesn’t bother you at all. (Keep believing and have faith in everything you do).

Since arriving at Selhurst Park, Uche, has only played 12 games (394 minutes) across all competitions .

Getafe president Angel Torres, meanwhile, stated last week they’re prepared to take back Uche in January.

The Nigerian had signed a contract with a mandatory purchase option if certain conditions were met, which, as of today, “doesn’t look good”.

Even so, Torres stressed that there is still “room” for circumstances to change, but he didn’t rule out the idea of the striker returning to the Coliseum: “He’d be welcome back if he returns.”

Should he return, the Getafe president has a very clear roadmap with the former Ceuta player. This would consist of “bringing him back again and selling him next year”.

FLAM 2025 :Adekunle Ajasin varsity  edge UNILAG to win Abuja Moot

The 2025 Football Law Annual Moot (FLAM) has amplified calls for greater investment in legal education within the football ecosystem, particularly among clubs, managers, and academy owners.

The event held in Abuja brought together leading sports lawyers from around the world to examine the legal challenges facing the industry, with a special focus on contractual stability in football.

Organised by legal practitioner Pius C. Ndubuokwu, the conference—held under the theme “The Role of International Arbitral Tribunals in Maintaining Contractual Stability in Football”—placed a spotlight on the contractual vulnerabilities experienced by Nigerian players abroad.

On the sidelines of the conference, the Football Law Annual Moot featured 44 universities from seven countries, progressing through three rigorous phases: a written brief competition, virtual oral rounds, and the grand finale.

In a repeat of last year’s outcome, Adekunle Ajasin University and the University of Lagos—who met in the 2024 semi-finals—once again emerged as the top two teams in the 2025 edition.

Both teams impressed the panel of arbitrators led by Georgi Gradev with their delivery, articulation, and command of sports law. Adekunle Ajasin University clinched the championship, earning a $1,500 cash prize, while the University of Lagos finished as runners-up with $1,000.

Meanwhile, speaking at the conference, Ndubuokwu revealed staggering statistics on player transfers and rights abuses.

“In the last 10 years, Nigeria has transferred about 17,200 players abroad. Of these, more than 30% have faced contractual violations. Shockingly, up to 80–90% of them are unaware their contracts were breached,” he said.

He stressed that FLAM 2025 serves as a foundation for educating players on their rights, noting that poor legal awareness affects not just athletes but the entire football economy.

“When players cannot protect their rights, it affects everyone—clubs, lawyers, agents. This programme addresses the core of contractual stability because contracts are the foundation of football. Clubs and academies invest heavily in scouting but often neglect the legal structures that are just as critical,” he added.

Ricardo de Buen, a long-standing arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) with over three decades of experience in labour and sports law, reinforced Ndubuokwu’s concerns.

He noted that many footballers lack knowledge of their rights and have limited access to legal support in their home countries.

“Events like this will improve the capacity of local lawyers, enabling them to better support athletes and even clubs involved in international disputes. Strengthening legal defence for players will ultimately benefit the entire sector,” he said.

The 2025 edition of FLAM underscored the pressing need for systemic reforms in football administration, starting with stronger legal frameworks and improved education for players, clubs, and practitioners across the continent.
