Police, DSS, military rescue seven kidnapped victims in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has crushed a notorious kidnapping operation following the dislodgement of a criminal camp and the rescue of seven abducted victims in a high-risk, cross-border security raid.

The dramatic operation was triggered by a distress call received by the Police on December 5, 2025, reporting that heavily armed kidnappers had invaded a community in Ushafa, Abuja, and whisked away several residents under the cover of darkness.

Following the development, a joint security task force made up of operatives from the FCT Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Nigerian Army, and the Department of State Services (DSS) swung into action on December 6, launching a coordinated manhunt for the abductors.

Guided by credible intelligence, the security team traced the suspects’ movements through the outskirts of the Mpape community and onward into settlements linking the Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

A statement issued on Sunday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said, “On 5th December 2025, the FCT Police Command received a distress report that armed men had invaded a community in Ushafa and abducted several residents. In a swift response, a joint team comprising operatives of the FCT Anti-Kidnapping Unit, alongside personnel of the Army and the DSS, mobilized to the area on 6th December 2025 and immediately commenced a coordinated search operation.

“Acting on credible intelligence, the team traced the suspects through the outskirts of Mpape community and into settlements extending towards the Kagarko LGA of Kaduna State. Upon sighting the security operatives, the kidnappers opened fire, engaging the security team in a fierce gun duel. The operatives returned fire with superior force, successfully dislodging the criminals from their hideout and rescuing one victim, who was found in their custody.

“Demonstrating remarkable gallantry, the joint security team continued the pursuit for over seven hours across difficult mountainous terrain. Their efforts led them to the suspects’ camp in Kweri Forest, Kaduna State, where another exchange of gunfire ensued. The sustained pressure forced the kidnappers to flee, prompting the operatives to rescue an additional six victims. All rescued victims were immediately taken to the hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition”.

Adeh said the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller Dantawaye, has commended the bravery and professionalism of the operatives.

He has ordered the deployment of additional manpower along the identified corridors to proactively deter further incursions by kidnapping syndicates into the Federal Capital Territory.

She said, “As efforts continue to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects, the Command calls on hospitals and healthcare providers to be vigilant and report anyone presenting with suspicious injuries to the FCT Police Command through the Command’s emergency numbers: 08061581938, 08032003913”.

A student of the Yola Campus of the Nigeria Law School, Ayomiposi Ojajuni, has allegedly taken his own life after he was prevented from sitting for his final bar examination.

The tragic incident became public on Sunday, following reports that Ayomiposi died earlier in the day after consuming a poisonous substance on Saturday, December 6, moments after confirming he would not be allowed to take the examination scheduled to begin that morning.

Those familiar with the matter explained that the school authorities had decided to bar him from the examination due to several unanswered queries previously issued to him.

Edo to begin enforcement of new sanitation law in January

Edo State Government said it would begin enforcement of the new Edo State Sanitation and Pollution Management Law from January 2026.

It said the new law was recently signed by Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Edo Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Nosa Adams, spoke over the weekend in Benin City at an interactive session with journalists.

Adams solicited media support for a green, clean, and safer environment in the state.

He said the new Sanitation Law would be implemented to the letter, even as he appealed for media support for advocacy and enlightenment of the general public.

“There is a new law called the Edo State Sanitation and Pollution Management Law, 2025. The law was signed by His Excellency some weeks ago. We want to embark on a rigorous implementation of the new law. Laws are not meant to be in the archives.

“The enforcement will start from January 2, 2026, to the extent that everyone will know there is a new law in town.

“We are embarking on enlightenment, we are embarking on advocacy, before we proceed to enforcement. Enforcement like never before. But in doing this, we need the press. So, let’s synergize to save our environment from further degradation.”

“Since I assumed office, I have tried my best to improve the environment in our state.

“The level of environmental degradation with no remediation and regeneration, if we allow it to continue like this, the current generation will not be able to survive it, let alone the coming generation.

He continued, “Industries are springing up. They emit flame into the air, and we breathe in the air. This is not safe for us. I am very determined to have a cleaner and greener environment. Our environment must be clean, safe, and habitable. In doing that, we need partners like the media.”

“We have discovered that the environment is life. If you are a billionaire and you do not live in a good environment, you are not safe. Environment and food are the most important things in man’s existence. Unfortunately or probably ignorantly, people embark on activities that are very detrimental to our environment.”

Jaiz Bank joins IILM as primary dealer

Jaiz Bank has signed an agreement with the International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation (IILM), becoming the first financial institution in Africa to join the global network of IILM Primary Dealers.

The agreement was formalised during the CBN–IILM Liquidity Management Capacity Building Conference held recently in Abuja.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Jaiz Bank, Dr. Haruna Musa, described the development as a major step for the institution. “This milestone is historic, as Jaiz Bank becomes the first financial institution in Africa to be admitted into the IILM’s global network of primary dealers,” he said.

Primary dealers serve as key intermediaries in financial markets, buying and selling liquidity instruments directly from the IILM and helping to maintain an active and stable market environment. Their role supports the implementation of monetary policy, ensures liquidity, and provides market intelligence to the IILM.

Dr. Haruna noted that joining the network would give the bank access to some of the most reputable liquidity management instruments available in the global Islamic finance space. “The onboarding positions Jaiz Bank to access world-class liquidity management instruments with strong credit quality,” he said.

He added that the partnership would strengthen the bank’s financial buffers. According to him, the agreement would deepen Jaiz Bank’s balance sheet resilience and improve its risk management capacity.

Dr. Haruna further stated that the new status would “enhance its regional and international visibility within the Islamic finance ecosystem,” while also helping to “strengthen its long-term collaboration with the CBN, IILM, ICD, and other global Islamic finance institutions.”

He said the achievement reflects the bank’s long-term vision. “This accomplishment aligns fully with the board and management’s strategic aspiration to elevate Jaiz Bank into a leading institution in Africa’s Islamic finance landscape, while supporting the Bank’s growth trajectory and capital-market activities.”

The Jaiz Bank chief also expressed appreciation to the Central Bank of Nigeria, the IILM leadership, and the bank’s board and staff for their support in achieving the feat.

The IILM is an international organisation that issues high-quality, short-term, Shariah-compliant liquidity instruments that are widely accepted by regulators and central banks across the world.

  • 2027: ADC plotting to destabilise Enugu, APC alleges

2027: ADC plotting to destabilise Enugu, APC alleges

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has raised the alarm over what it described as a growing plot by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to sow disunity and destabilise the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party urged residents across the three senatorial districts to remain vigilant and resist any attempt by the ADC to derail the long-standing governorship zoning arrangement that has maintained peace, stability, and political cohesion in Enugu for decades.

State Caretaker Committee Chairman of the APC, Dr. Ben Nwoye, issued the warning over the weekend during the inauguration of the party’s ward and local government executive committees in Nkanu West Local Government Area.

Nwoye, accompanied by the committee’s secretary and former Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Barrister Eugene Odo, said the ADC had become a gathering point for aggrieved politicians determined to “disrupt what has kept Enugu politically stable.”

“Do not allow yourselves to be deceived by members of the ADC,” he cautioned. “They want to use you as instruments of disunity and destabilisation. These are politicians who are bitter and desperate to thwart the existing governorship zoning agreement that has given Enugu uninterrupted peace.”

He insisted that sustaining the zoning formula remained crucial to the collective interest of the state, adding that Governor Peter Mbah’s performance had reinforced the justification for continuity.

According to him, Mbah had delivered across sectors and deserved a second term in office in line with the rotational arrangement.

The Nkanu West inauguration formed part of the final phase of the APC’s statewide tour to install local government and ward executives across the 17 LGAs and 260 wards of the state.

Other members of the state caretaker delegation present included former Minister of State for Defence, Ambassador Fidelia Njeze; Comrade Peter Chime; Dr. Oby Ajih; Dr. Chiedozie Nwafor; and Engr. Emma Ekeh. They were received by a massive crowd of party supporters, stakeholders, and government officials.

Also in the delegation were the immediate past PDP State Chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, and the Governor’s Political Adviser, Hon. Frank Anioma.

Nwoye reiterated that the APC had emerged as the “winning party” in the state, noting that Governor Mbah’s realignment to the APC had changed the political equation.

He recalled attending Mbah’s 2023 governorship rally in full APC attire despite being a loyal party member at the time, saying he was convinced that “the tide of history had shifted.”

“It was evident that the PDP was already weighed down by internal conflicts, while Governor Mbah symbolised a new kind of leadership, one that would perform exceptionally once aligned with the centre,” he added.

Former PDP Chairman, Dr. Chukwunweike, justified the mass movement of political structures, from the state to the ward level, into the APC, describing it as a reflection of the “practical realities of governance” and the best interest of the people.

The statewide inauguration, which also covered Enugu North and Nkanu East LGAs, concluded this weekend after two weeks of intensive tour by the Nwoye-led committee.
